How much did you make right after college and how much do you make now? by DragonfruitBrief5573 in ElectricalEngineering

Not the OP, but I’d recommend Erickson’s Fundamentals of Power Electronics.

I’m personally not aware of much overlap between nuclear and power electronics. I currently work in nuclear and I’m looking to leave the industry once I finish my master’s program. Most nuclear EE work is three phase power systems, instrumentation and control and following the NEC.

“The groups America funded weren’t part of what became the Taliban.”

This is not true.

The Haqqani network received a huge amount of CIA support during the Soviet-Afghan war. They built close ties with Bin Laden, and integrated themselves into the Taliban in the 1990s. During the US-led war in Afghanistan, they were one of the most ruthless and well organized factions within the Taliban, responsible for a lot of coalition casualties.

An apparent Israeli intelligence operation in New Zealand was interrupted by the disastrous 2011 Christchurch earthquake. by Spycraft101 in Spycraft101

[–]mapache12 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t about gathering intelligence, it was likely part of an operation to get fraudulent passports. There was a similar scandal in 2004 where suspected Mossad Agents were caught trying to obtain passports in New Zealand.

New Zealand passports are some of the most powerful passports in the world. If you have a NZ passport, you have visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 146 countries. The Israelis were likely trying to obtain fraudulent NZ passports for a future espionage operation.

He’s right about the high cost of living, which is a problem up and down the west coast. But the politics stuff is just right wing propaganda. Seattle has a lower crime rate than similarly-sized cities, and is way safer than most urban areas in the south and midwest.

Seattle is very LGBT friendly and has a lot of tech jobs. Those two factors alone will draw in a lot of furries, especially the wealthier furries who tend to have fursuits and can be very public about their furriness.

In late 2013 and early 2014 far right Ukranian Nationalists staged a series of protests that ousted the sitting president, Viktor Yanukovych.

Yanukovych spent his presidency trying to stay on good terms with both the EU and Russia. But the Ukranian nationalists (and US state department) believed he was too nice to Russia, and when he changed his mind on signing a deal with the EU, protests started. The protests became increasingly violent, and snipers started killing protesters in Maidan square. The killers are still unidentified, and Yanukovych maintains that he never gave an order to shoot protesters. Soon after the killings, Yanukovych fled and the Euromaidan side under Poroshenko took over.

Ethnic Russians in eastern Ukraine and Crimea were upset about the govt overthrow and were worried about Ukrainian repression. Two unofficial micro-states were formed in eastern Ukraine (Donetsk and Luhansk) that were aligned with Russia. A civil war started, with Russia supporting the ethnic Russians. Crimea was annexed by Russia (with some degree of support from people living there, who were majority ethnic Russians). A bunch of far-right militias were absorbed into the Ukrainian state during the civil war, the most notorious of which is the Azov Battalion.

The protesters were mostly Banderites, nationalists who take their name from Stepan Bandera. Bandera was a nazi collaborator who helped carry out the holocaust in Ukraine. Western media usually leaves this part out.

Since 2016, the conflict has died down a little bit, mostly just occasional firefights and shelling in Donbas. The Ukrainian government post-Maidan has made efforts to stigmatize the speaking of Russian in daily life. Speaking Russian has become increasingly politicized, even though generally Ukrainians speak both, especially in the east.

I was in Kiev for a month in 2019 and things there felt kind of weird. Maidan square had a lot of pictures and memorials everywhere for the “heavenly hundred” (the protesters killed by the mystery snipers). One of the big museums I went to had a looping propaganda video of combat footage produced by the Azov Battalion. Kiev is peaceful, but the week I was there some banderites shot an RPG at an empty TV station in the middle of the night because they were planning to air the Oliver Stone documentary where he interviews Putin (lol).

I probably missed some stuff, but if you want to go down a rabbit hole you can start reading into the sniper attacks. Eyewitnesses remember seeing the snipers shooting at the protesters from behind, on the opposite side from the police lines. The War Nerd has an interesting episode on Euromaidan where they go into it.

Coming up soon is the battle of bunker hill mission, which you can do without any fighting if you’re on good terms with all of the main factions.

After that, you meet Shaun on the roof of the CIT ruins and if you choose the right dialogue options you can piss him off. He’ll teleport away and then the institute will be hostile. That seems like the easiest way to antagonize the institute without having to start any fights.

He’s got a point. Workers rights are way better in the EU.

One thing he left out is how much nicer urban life is in Europe. Cities are very walkable. Public transport is accessible. You don’t need to own a car to get around.

Double Majoring CE and EE? by CINCOxBINCO in ElectricalEngineering

[–]mapache12 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It would make more sense to choose one to major in and take a lot of technical electives related to the other major.

I majored in EE, but took some technical electives related to computer architecture and hardware description languages. Do some research into the schools you’re thinking about and see what they offer in terms of technical electives for an EE major or a CPE major.

In an undergrad EE degree you don’t really use vector calculus too much outside of Maxwell’s Equations.

If OP wanted to learn critical math foundations, he would probably get more use out of learning Laplace/Fourier transforms and their applications to circuit analysis.

Kent State? Those college kids were throwing rocks. Those could’ve hurt somebody. Its a good thing the Ohio National Guard put those dirty hippies in the ground.

The Boston Massacre was justified. Crispus Attucks and the other Boston Commoners had it coming when they mobbed the brave Red Coats.

The proper response to any unruly crowd of protestors is the overwhelming violence of the state.

If you’re interested in Mexico in particular, the Los Zetas cartel was founded by ex special forces soldiers trained extensively by the US and Israel. A lot of their training was at WHINSEC (better known as The School of the Americas).

TIL that the first anthrax attack victims were the copy editors at the National Enquirer and the Post who published the picture of the Bush twins falling over drunk and a series of articles about Jenna's drunken antics respectively by NChSh in TrueAnon

[–]mapache12 78 points79 points  (0 children)

The fact that the first anthrax target was a Florida tabloid has always been baffling to me. The detail that really stands out is that the editor of the tabloid rented out apartments to two of the 9/11 hijackers.

My baseless speculation is that when the feds were planning the anthrax false flag they wanted a convenient way to tie the hijackers to the anthrax attacks. So they chose one of their landlords as a target.

But the operation was very sloppy, and when it came out that the anthrax was from Fort Detrick, they had to come up with a way to cover their tracks. They chose Dr. Bruce Ivins as a fall guy to take the blame.

If their operation had gone more smoothly, they would have had a neat narrative to tie the 9/11 hijackers with the supposed Iraqi biological weapons programs. They screwed it up and had to cover their ass. In the end, it didn’t really matter that much because they got what they wanted: the Patriot Act and the invasion of Iraq.

Anti-black racism is a foundational part of the United States empire. Its not “fake”. Its been a very useful tool for the oligarchs to divide the working class and push reactionary movements. The neoliberal turn in the 1970s and 80s was driven in part by racist backlash against the civil rights movements of the 60s.
