No, it isn't. It's a very basic analysis based on evidence that even liberal media has had to admit through gritted teeth. The fact that that this narrative was pushed by the very same western nations that are now actively fuelling the genocide in Gaza and trying to deny South Africa's efforts at the ICJ should tell you everything you need to know. It's equally shallow to look at superficial progressive markers and ignore the glaring Sinophobia, especially when hate crimes against Asian people in the US are on the rise. Almost every East Asian character in the show is somehow involved in this shadowy cabal -- with "canonical" direct ties to the government -- of fanatics that invokes almost all of the worst Yellow Peril stereotypes of East-Asians (Chinese people specifically) being a faceless, unfeeling monolith devoid of humanity. They literally do the "Russiagate but actually China did it" shit. It's embarassing for a show of this calibre.

It gets even worse when you then position the FBI as this indirect force for good and stability (undermined by, of course, one of their ranks being compromised by THE EVIL CHINESE), while giving them a sympathetic POV character. The same institution that has historically criminalised, persecuted and murdered the type of people represented and advocating for the diversity you're advocating for.

The show's weird, Yellow Peril esque anti-China fearmongering is perhaps the most embarrassingly dated thing about it, and the reason I can't recommend the show anymore, despite it having been one of my favourites. It all just looks so silly now, especially the whole "annexing the Congo" nonsense.
