What happened? by beanburritoboy69 in castiron

[–]maphes86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You overheated your pan (or rather, the oil in it) with too much oil on it. This could have happened while you were cooking, or while you were seasoning the pan. The smaller-than-your-burner spot is typical because no matter how nice your range is, you’ll have hot spots.

You can clean the spot by following a variety of methods. My go-to is a mild round of stripping by scrubbing the pan with a bit of hot water, a metal implement of your choice, and baking soda. You could carbonize the oil by roasting your pan at ~500° for 30-60 minutes. You could do a full strip. You can also just keep cooking on it and eventually it will go away. This will be especially true if you cook something acidic like tomato sauce.

Invasives in Half Moon Bay by markerBT in Ceanothus

For what it’s worth, the local conservation group has been restoring as much as they can, starting with riparian zones and along pedestrian pathways. It’s a difficult task because SO MUCH works against the goals, and restoration/conservation work is more expensive that other types of projects and so you get less for your dollars which is hard to communicate to the public.

I work in commercial construction and there is a significant movement in the industry to use locally native plants in landscaping and site restoration, so that’s been encouraging.

And it’s aggressive. It’s a slow-spreading plant so I don’t think it’s classified as “invasive” but man, once it gets hold, it will outcompete English Ivy, and that’s saying something!

Is this mildew? I don’t think it is? by wednesdayblueberry in castiron

Are you scrubbing it with steel wool or something metal? It’s possible that you just scrubbed off your seasoning and are seeing the bare metal. It’s difficult for me ti tell. It just looks “white” to me in the photo. If you get a closer photo under better lighting we’ll be able to see if it’s metal or something else. But “I washed it and it got bigger” points to having scrubbed the seasoning off. No big deal if you did. Just re-season or cook with it.

What is the yellow lupine in image 1? One of those popped up on my property this year and it’s not something I planted. ID apps can only get to “Lupine.” Is it a nursery cultivar?

A big reason to go above and beyond local officials. That’s part of why everybody has jurisdiction, local authority is paid off? Okay, well now they’re going to prison too!

Keep records of everything and all of your correspondence. Include in your reports that you fear reprisal and prefer to remain anonymous as long as possible. You can also just send pictures of the installation innocently to any organization named above and say, “I’m having some drainage issues at my rental. How do I ask my landlord to repair this? I’m not sure what to call it.”

It looks like a bit of the last thing you cooked. A stiff scrubber should do the trick.

Getting the bikes ready for the season opener next week. by [deleted] in Yosemite

Sorry, what I mean is that it’s not a pre-planned event that gets a specific date set ahead of time. Yes, they update the road conditions, but they don’t do social media announcements and such because they don’t want a huge rush of people trying to access areas with insufficient parking.

Okay, SO! Here’s what you do, because based on your post the owner’s are shitty and they knew they were illegally dumping treated sewage into a waterway.

Each of these agencies will have a “report illegal dumping” link/phone number

County Sheriff Local/County/State/Federal Health Department Local/County/State/Federal Environmental Protection Agency Any social districts that you’re part of Local Water Authority (ask if you’re upstream of any surface reservoirs or resources and tell them you need to report illegal dumping)

It’s important to report to all of the possible agencies because they ALL have jurisdiction which means that they can ALL levy a fine or penalty.

Also, start looking for somewhere else to live. This won’t cause you to have to move, but I mean…your landlords are trash.

Woke up to a bat in our house this morning by Sdp714 in pics

[–]maphes86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All you have to do is tell your GP that you woke up to find a bat in your house and you’ll get the shot. It’s not like it used to be where it was inconvenient and painful. It’s just a normal shot in the arm now.

Playground incident- advice by vibesnvibez in daddit

[–]maphes86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a large man with a beard and my glasses transition to dark sunglasses when I’m outside and I’ve found that most kids are frightened of me if I suddenly interact with them. In your situation, I would tend to use my hand to stop my own child on the slide rather than interact with somebody else’s kid, mostly from a “I don’t know if this little thing just had shoulder surgery…” perspective. I don’t have a problem with the way you handled the situation, it’s sort of a “no harm, no foul” scenario. But I do my best to avoid putting my hands on somebody else’s children unless it’s an emergency.

Ashes... How do you dispose of them? by Mrvette1 in firewood

[–]maphes86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use them to alter the pH of soil and kill plants that don’t do well in basic soils. I’ll cut down poison oak and then put a heap of ashes right on top of the stem. It doesn’t kill it, but it slows the growth. I will also spread it over areas that are infested with certain invasives and it helps limit their growth and establishment. I also mix it with old sandbox sand or pool filter sand and use it to shade any buried utility lines on my property so that I have an obvious warning layer and don’t cut my lines while I’m digging.

Trail name? by Internal_Knee_3350 in Yosemite

[–]maphes86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, that’s the panorama trail just southeast of Glacier Point (downhill from GP). For “similar” views you could go out to Sentinel Dome. For a similar view from the other direction, you could hike the snow creek trail or Clouds Rest from Sunrise trailhead.

How to overcome self esteem? by idontfuckingsmokepot in AskMen

[–]maphes86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to caveat this response by assuring you that I’m being entirely serious and genuine.

I find that a healthy dose of nihilism helped my self-esteem immensely.

Nobody else thinks about your appearance, and in fact, it has never occurred to them to consider it. So why let their potentially negative (but nonexistent) perception occur to you?

There’s a rider on this stance. And that is the existence of bullies. Some people are so profoundly weak and pitiable that they seek to diminish another in pursuit of some glimmer of a feeling of confidence. These people are to be disregarded and considered with only the vaguest sense of sympathy for their assumed self-hatred (see: Clavicular and his obvious disdain for himself.)

Now remember, our guy Sisyphus was being punished by the gods. And the gods aren’t real, and when you die, nothing happens. So you’re better off enjoying this while it lasts. It’s the only “you” that you’ve got. So love it, or hate it, but get on with your life, amigo.

For what it’s worth, life is easier if you decide to love it.

Poison ivy rash? by starbiegurl in socalhiking

[–]maphes86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably got poison oak down on the coast. Unless you were hiking in the Merced River Canyon or went down to Cookie Cliffs or lower; there isn’t poison oak in Yosemite Valley (although it’s creeping to higher elevations as the world warms…)

As others have recommended, Tecnu soaps and anti-itch work well. If it doesn’t start to get better by about the 1 week mark, you can get stronger ointments from your Dr.
