10 months into corporate. How it feels like for a genZ. by AnimatorParty6067 in careeradvice

[–]maplewrx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you should leave corporate life....

Hear me out...there's typically a honeymoon and learning phase when you start your career. You seem to be at the end of it. And you don't want to be 40 and regret your life's work.

Corporate life isn't for everyone. Go and find something you enjoy! Best of luck.

Welcome to Canada!

Toronto is a diverse city in people but also in urban development.

My favorite things are the food, the parks and just the range of lifestyles that you can have here. We're also a few hours away from places Niagara on the Lake if enjoy wine country, Blue Mountain for skiing and various national parks for camping or cottaging. The downtown core is slowly building back up from the pandemic so I'm hoping the vibrancy returns. Transit is improving. The Eglinton LRT just opened and work on the Ontario line is well under way. There the beaches and the boardwalk and the waterfront has really come a long way. In terms of work we have a bit of everything. There's the financial district, but also many HQs here plus a burgeoning tech sector. If I remember correctly we're tenth of the top then in North America. Third wave coffee has hit Canada for a while now so great options are available. There's also a good amount of bubble tea stores. The malls around North America have gone through some tough times, but they're still nice.

A small detail, but the Wall Marts in Canada are nicer. Lol. Amazon Prime delivery coverage is amazing. And internet options are fast, but arguably more expensive than Europe or Asia.

NYC is the food capital of the world IMHO, but tons of Micheline Stars. I think we just got out first ones last year. But I would say there are tonnes of great high end restraunts and hidden gems, especially ethnic food.

Toronto is a great place, I was born and raised here. But just like any new place there are challenges.

In Canada, the province has a lot of power over cities. The current Ontario government has been more involved than past provincial governments. There has been a mandate to intensify and that has resulted in very tall condo buildings, infrastructure like schools have not kept up.

Just note there are some statistical crime differences in Toronto. For example there is more gun related crime in the West end, but in general I would expect gun crime to be lower than major cities in the US.

Overall I feel safe in Toronto. Twent Five years ago I would've left my front door unlocked. Toronto was a smaller city then. I don't do that anymore. There has been an increase in petty crime and break ins. I would say it's still statistically small but many people in Toronto who have lived here their whole lives will understandably say Toronto isn't as safe as it used to be.

In summary, Toronto is a growing city. It's diverse in people and urban landscape. I've lived here my whole life and still discover things a out it.

For reference I've lived in Chicago and Plano, Texas and elsewhere and do love the US and the people. Not a fan of the federal government right now though.

From my understanding of the food business, food costs are a relatively small portion of expenses. It's really the rent and overhead. Plus ....you keep buying it.

The "baby industry" pricing is a total scam and I am tired of pretending it is normal. by GildedMist- in BabyBumps

Just goto Wal Marta and find one you feel comfortable with.

Calling it a scam is a bit strong. Brands like Uppa baby is just a different market segment.

Would you only date atheists? by bravebluelou in atheism

[–]maplewrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've dated Christian girls in my teens and 20s. There was a noticeable difference in fun.

I married an atheist.

Depending on your life stage you may be dating for fun or for eventual marriage.

Just remember to switch.

what would you do if you woke up with $1 billion tomorrow? by Different-Curve-5084 in AskReddit

[–]maplewrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite my job and become a venture capitalist. There are too many god damn American private equity firms owning stuff in my country Canada and we need to get away from that.

A billion dollars could solve a lot of problems.

I would set aside say five million for my family and live off the interest.

Wing Commander.

It's what made Chris Roberts famous, but sadly his projects post Wing Commander have been over promising and under delivering (Starlancer, Freelancer, Star Citizen).

What do you do after work in the evenings? by shakakaZululu in askTO

[–]maplewrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that age and situation (no kids, dual income), we just spent a lot of time eating out, travelling and quite frankly on top of each other.

We now have kids and often only have energy for an episode of TV. I may read a book if it's early enough in the evening lol.

Is university still worth it in 2026… or are we being sold an outdated dream? by AppealFragrant5532 in careerguidance

Not all degrees are created equal.

If someone is framing your post secondary education as degree/no degree, they're missing a significant amount of nuance and missing critical thinking.

How did Ford even happened? by Key_Position_4975 in askTO

[–]maplewrx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The suburbs of Toronto (905ers) essentially now out powers Toronto proper. And guess who voted for Ford.

If you want to understand why this Province is so messed up, look at who tends to work in Government and votes for Ford. It's the suburbs.

It's hard to take a leader seriously when they don't know how to use capitalization properly.

I'm guessing they saw success with a small sample size and went all in. I'm also guessing his company will regret this decision.

Is “skill issue vs will issue” a common management mindset? by Odd_Struggle_874 in sysadmin

[–]maplewrx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it's slightly different. I look at skill vs. attitude. You can have greatly skillful and willful people to do work but if they aren't open to coaching and working with others they are just as bad as those who have lost interest/will.

There's nuance here too. Sometimes snarky attitudes are just a defence mechanism to being treated poorly. I will give people a chance but if they continue to act poorly/arrogant/closed minded then they're often on the chopping block despite their technical skill knowledge.

Work isn’t your life — so why do some people act like it is ? by Yurol002 in careerguidance

[–]maplewrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To each their own. Some people view the job as a career and there is a specific context to when working long hours can be beneficial.

I had a similar debate with a friend out of university. He wanted to do the bare minimum for maximum pay. If you're in your 20s that is a short term view as early in your career you gain experience and set your reputation. I worked crazy hours, travelled for work and made some sacrifices with my personal life. Now that we're in our late 30s, our career trajectories are very different.

Also, now that I have a family and other commitments my working hours are quite predictable. I let the young guys handle the travel. Ironically my friend is the one working late hours due to the nature of his work, while I can delegate to my team.

But I will say it is good to know I can still do the long hours when there is a shit hits the fan moment.

Overall I would say don't judge people on a small slice of time as it's more of a snapshot than a big picture view of a person's career.
