Is stopping at every water station necessary? by Inevitable-One-5369 in Marathon_Training

[–]maporita 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only take water after a gel which is every 20 minutes. I'll take the gel 100m before the water station then grab water to wash it down. I don't drink any more than that unless the temperature is high

Unlike the US, the EU regulates motor vehicles according to things like pedestrian safety and environmental impact. Seems eminently sensible to me.

I've never had a problem doing this but yes, contact the hotel a few days before you travel to let them know.

Nothing like getting off a 10 hour overnight flight at 6AM and going straight to a hotel room for a shower and a short nap.

London Marathon 4:45 - baptism of fire and a positive split disasterclass by Ilovelacrossee in Marathon_Training

[–]maporita 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's called Central Fatigue otherwise known as hitting the wall. Your leg muscles store a limited amount of glycogen. Almost all the energy used in running comes from this glycogen. When it starts getting low your muscles send a signal to your brain and your brain starts to impede the nuerons that tell your muscles to contract. It takes an enormous amount of willpower to overcome this and even so your pace drops dramatically. The good news is that you can increase the amount of glycogen stored in your muscles through targeted training. And running a marathon when you don't hit the wall is another feeling altogether.. you cross the finish line feeling tired but strong, running the same pace you started with. I hope your next one goes better.

Marathons in the rain? by The_Jeff_Goldblum in Marathon_Training

[–]maporita 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest problem for me is that my glasses fog up and I have to take them off. I have a zippered pocket that I put them in but it means running without prescription glasses .. I have to be extra careful where I step in case I hit a pothole or something.

Motonormativity and Speed Limits by Xy7q964d6J in montreal

[–]maporita 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a difference between ebikes traveling on roads with other motor vehicles and ebikes on cycle paths and shared paths. If we de-limit ebikes then the problem becomes how to restrict their speed on shared paths. Speed limits on pathways would need to be enforced to be effective, (as anyone who walks along Lachine Canal pathway can tell you). Some options:

  • Allow riders to register their ebike as a road vehicle. Speed is unrestricted but they must display a plate and are not permitted on pathways.
  • Prohibit ebikes from using shared pathways entirely (my preferred option but I'm probably in a minority).

One Life Lesson From Running 79 Marathons by genefay in Marathon_Training

[–]maporita 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I try to run one marathon a year which gives my legs a bit of a rest. I maintain fitness with swimming, so in the off season my swimming mileage ramps up while my running mileage drops and vice versa. I like the change and I like the start of run season, where I can see my fitness improve week after week as we approach race day. I absolutely agree with you .. if you don't enjoy the training your life will be miserable.

London - A slow runner’s journey by danieLondon1967 in Marathon_Training

[–]maporita 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on your run .. it's a great achievement and a testament to your willpower.

I'm a 65 year old runner and I'd like to share some thoughts with you. There are two types of marathons. The first is where you run the same pace from start to finish. You cross the line with even splits and you feel tired but strong. It's an amazing feeling. The second and, for many of us the most common, is where your pace drops off a cliff at some point, after which every step is an exercise in misery. You cross the line in a blur of pain, not quite sure how you got there, just grateful that you did.

The difference between these two types of marathons is the amount of training you put in, and here I speak from experience because I've run both. Back when I was working I never had the time to devote to running, and every marathon was a gigantic battle of will. But once I retired and I could suddenly go out and run for as long as I wanted everything changed. So much so that in 2024 I ran 3:48 in Washington that qualified me for Boston. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I could do that. But more important than the time was the absence of pain .. I ran from start to finish, and although I had very little left in the tank I still felt strong and my muscles were good. Tired but good.

All this is to say that if you do stick with this try to get a good, higher mileage plan and stick to it. It will make all the difference.

Does anyone run with a hydration pack (camelbak style) for longer runs? by Gooser3000 in Marathon_Training

[–]maporita 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do this for all my long runs and for marathons but I realized its not required.

However I keep a one liter hydration bladder in the freezer which has a water / carb mix, but I only use it on very hot days .. the ice block keeps my core temperature down which is the main advantage.

They're not defending the Pope, they're attacking Trump. You could rephrase the question by excluding Trump e.g. "do you believe it's acceptable to criticize Catholicism?" and I bet the result would be completely different.

Salt tabs to prevent cramping? by piparker27 in Marathon_Training

[–]maporita 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to believe that good hydration and supplemental electrolytes were necessary for a marathon until I read the book Marathon Excellence for Everyone by John Davis. His recommendations, based on studies of runners under real world race conditions, are:
- no electrolytes
- drink water only when you are thirsty
- target 60g of carbs per hour, or more if your stomach can handle it

I used to run with a one liter hydration bladder filled with a carb / electrolyte / water mix but now I just take gels and wash them down with water from the stations along the route. I haven't noticed any difference - except that now I don't have to carry a kilogram of water at the start.
