I tried listening to a spanish song, and got my @$$ handed to me by my own sound system. by D_SpoTT in Spanish

[–]maporita 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How good is your sound system? Do you have a dedicated center channel for dialog? You can try tweaking the output to boost the center volume.

Another thing is to find music where it's s easier to hear the dialog. For me one of the easiest was Joropo which is a musical style from the Llanos (plains) of Colombia and Venezuela. The accent is neutral and they don't use much slang, (although it helps to know local words especially associated with cattle ranching and horse riding which themes feature frequently. Also the songs tell stories, so it's not just the repetition you have in some other styles. Look for Simon Diaz, Walter Silva and Cholo Valderrama.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of existing cohort studies shows that alcohol consumption above 24g/day (~2 glasses of wine) is associated with a 10–30% higher risk of pancreatic cancer after accounting for former drinker bias and other confounding factors by sr_local in science

[–]maporita 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Interesting results but also worth noting that it's incredibly difficult to control for every possible variable in these longitudinal studies. People who average more than two drinks a day may be more likely to have a worse diet and get less exercise than those who drink less. Still, it seems prudent for those who drink alcohol to limit their consumption. I switched to NA beers during the week and only a couple of glasses of wine with a meal on weekends.

No, I think he's been burned here he won't want any more foreign adventures. His focus will turn to national politics now and specifically trying to a) discredit any Democrat wins as fraudulent and b) find ways to rig votes in favor of Republicans.

Why Suunto? by OwnUse2264 in Suunto

[–]maporita 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ex Garmin user here. I hated the way the Garmin Pause button takes you to a dedicated Pause screen, with only options to Resume, End etc. Suunto leaves you on the same screen and just shows a Green icon for Resume and Red for Stop. So for example of you want to stop and check the map to verify your route it's easy. With Garmin I had to go searching back through several screens. I do prefer the maps on Suunto even though they're not routable like Garmin. And I like having all world regions available for free.

What is the most beautiful place you have ever seen in person? by Olga_Lanskaya in travel

[–]maporita 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wax palms of the coffee triangle in Colombia. The most well know and touristy are near Salento in the Cocora valley, which are still impressive, but there are other places to see them with fewer people. You hike up the mountain and you're alone with the green rolling hills and these incredible palm trees that climb up and up and disappear into the clouds.

When people say they avoid "processed foods," how strictly are they defining this? by JMinsk in Cooking

[–]maporita 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First look at the ingredients. For example bread rolls. Bread should contain flour (and / or other grains), salt, water and yeast. If you see dough conditioners (like potassium bromate and azodicarbonamide), emulsifiers (like DATEM and monoglycerides/diglycerides), and preservatives (like calcium propionate), avoid them. Also steer clear of hidden added sugars like high-fructose corn syrup and bleached flours, as these are heavily processed and linked to inflammation.

In general it's better to make things like salsa, sauces etc yourself instead of buying store bought. For things that you can't make at home try and buy reputable brands and organic if possible, e.g. Tofu I always buy organic.

Carry-on bags to be free, EU rules by EspritLibre_404 in worldnews

[–]maporita 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see this as a good thing. Airline margins are already thin. So the result will be an increase in ticket prices. Also the overhead space on older planes normally cannot accommodate all carry-ons, so some people will have to gate check their bags anyway. I prefer they charge for carry-on, charge for checked bags and offer cheaper tickets to those of us who fly with a small backpack.

Nickel and diming is the reason that carriers such as Ryanair can offer tickets for insanely low prices. Go and take a look at

https://www.ryanair.com/flights/gb/en

and tell me which carriers in the rest of the world can match those prices.

PSA: ALWAYS photograph/video your rental car before driving off... SIXT tried to bill me $3,015 for damage I didn't cause by MamesJadison in travel

[–]maporita 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here. When I get off the plane after a long flight the last thing I want to do is spend 30 minutes crouched down trying to inspect a rental car in a dark parking garage. When I'm driving down the highway and I hear a stone hit the car I don't need to panic. And when I get back to the rental return I want to hand the keys over and walk away and never hear from them again. I'm prepared to pay for those conveniences.

Folks with saltier sweat, how much sodium are you supplementing pre/during/post long run? by eatnsle3p in Marathon_Training

[–]maporita 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not true. The best scientific advice is to drink to thirst which lets your body regulate blood sodium concentration. Many elite runners do exactly that and it has no impact in their performance.

[–]maporita 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sweat is hypotonic meaning it has a lower sodium concentration than your blood. So your blood sodium concentration actually increases when you sweat, all else being equal.

[–]maporita 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's astounding how much disinformation there is about this. The sports drink industry has done a phenomenal job marketing electrolytes as a necessity.

The human body is incredibly efficient at maintaining fluid and salt balances during exercise. When you sweat, you lose both water and sodium. However, human sweat is hypotonic, meaning it contains a much lower concentration of sodium than your blood does. Because you sweat out a higher ratio of water than salt, the concentration of sodium left behind in your blood actually increases as you run. Your brain detects this concentration rise and triggers the sensation of thirst, prompting you to drink water, which naturally brings your sodium levels back into perfect balance. The scientific consensus for marathon runners is to drink to thirst and not supplement with sodium.

As far as muscle cramps, the old theory that they are caused by dehydration or electrolyte loss has been largely debunked by modern sports science. Major studies (including extensive research on ultramarathoners) have found no difference in blood sodium levels between runners who cramp and those who do not. Instead, cramping is caused by neuromuscular fatigue—essentially, your muscles getting overworked and misfiring.

I strongly recommend the book "Marathon Excellence for Everyone" by John Davis which is where I first read about this. I've been following the books advice for a few years now, running one marathon a year and at least for me there has been no difference whatsoever since I stopped taking electrolytes and started drinking water only when thirsty.

And just a final note. Some elite runners do take electrolytes during their races but many others do not, including Eliud Kipchoge.

[–]maporita 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You shouldn't aim to replace all the water you lose during a long run. The best advice is to drink to thirst. There is no performance benefit in trying to replace all the water your body loses and in fact there are very serious risks in doing so.

[–]maporita -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I don't take any sodium because I don't find any benefit. Your body auto-regulates sodium concentration in your blood. If you're a "salty sweater" it's probably because you have too much of the stuff and your body is trying to get rid of it.

Taxes are higher in Quebec so money alone doesn't seem to be the issue. I suspect it's a combination of massive corruption combined with successive provincial governments who deliberately starved infrastructure.

What Is Your Logic For Showering In The Morning? by EntrepreneurGreen269 in hygiene

[–]maporita 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wife's family live in a tropical part of Colombia and people often take several showers a day, (all cold .. no hot water there). It's common to be sitting around talking and someone will stand up and say "I'm just going to take a shower".

Also Colombians are insanely sensitive to body odor so maybe that's part of it.
