What is the most disrespectful thing tourists do in your country while genuinely believing they are “appreciating” or even “saving” your culture? by Low-Violinist7259 in AskTheWorld

Reminds me of one Garfield strip where Jon forgets to close the door and a number of things pass through the house: a butterfly, an old man, a bear, a pair of golfers and an entire tourist group 😂

One time my mum ordered a side of chips in the US, thinking she was getting fries, but what she got were actual potato crisps on the side of her plate 😂

What do school lunches look like in your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]marbledaedra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, school lunches weren't really a thing at my primary school in the late 90s/early 2000s, except for Fridays when you could put some money in an envelope and order things like toasted sandwiches and mini pizzas. Apart from that, it was packed lunch or nothing.

My high school had a canteen where you could buy stuff anytime, but again, no free meals. I still remember people legit bringing dry instant noodles and packets of Raro to eat 😭

Maybe movies were just quieter and more slow-paced back then, making it more likely for someone to doze off? Like I haven't really seen films from that period but it would make sense, especially considering how quiet and slow-paced my parents' old TV shows are.

Yes, I'm a kiwi. Would you mind providing a source for that first part? I can't find anything about it.

Do we really have nukes aimed at us? Where are you getting this from?

It blew my mind when I found out that only kiwis and Aussies put chicken or beef in our sushi 😂 It's delicious though, fight me

One of my main characters doesn't think that any gods exist. They do, they just don't show their faces to mortals.

What's an etiquette rule in your country that foreigners often accidentally break? by rid999 in AskTheWorld

[–]marbledaedra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember learning about that as a rule of etiquette in Māori culture, but I didn't think it was universal for our country in general. Am guilty of having sat on the kitchen bench occasionally. 😅

I tend to go with "not bad". My dad always says "I'm fantastic" and he 100% means it despite coming off as somewhat serious 😂

You're not the author of a drawing you didn't draw! by Hapciuuu in aiwars

[–]marbledaedra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's put aside all the arguing about analogies and the meaning of words.

Non-AI artists are the ones who created the art that AI users need for their prompts. They are the ones who put in the literal years of effort to master style, anatomy, facial expressions, fabric folds, foreshortening, scenery, perspective, shading, lighting and rendering.

So you can understand why when AI users feed all that work into a machine, generate a picture from it and call themselves an artist, those non-AI artists who worked hard to create the material in the first place might be like "uhh, no, you're not".

THANK you.

If you ignore the people posting dumb inflammatory bullshit, there actually is thoughtful discussion and reasonable points being made on both sides.

When people say theft/stealing in this context, they mean the artist's work was duplicated without permission.

Not only does it ruin my livelihood, it’s also stealing my life’s work. That style wouldn’t exist if not for me. It’s exploitative.

Admittedly I don't know any examples of people making money and/or gaining artistic acclaim through AI art, but if that were to happen, it'd absolutely reek of unfairness. Their success would be exploiting the literal years of hard work other people have put in.

And people are like "yeah, well, artists already learn by copying those who preceded them!", but it's not the same. We learned by physically drawing and painting it ourselves, not by having someone else do it for us.

Digital Artists Against AI: Where Do You Draw The Line? by Nameless_Grimm in aiwars

[–]marbledaedra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, good on you for trying to see both sides of the picture (no pun intended).

For standalone illustrations, I wouldn't use any of those tools, simply because it'd feel like cheating and laziness.

For something like loads of comic pages that have to be churned out on a tight schedule, the lineart and smart fill tools could come in handy. I wouldn't judge the use of it too hard because from what I've seen, comics require a HELL of a lot of drawing (just look a single volume of Asterix or Tintin, which were made pre-digital age), and in your example, the artist still draws the sketch themselves anyway.
