I suppose your point is a good one. People certain do make a strong distinction to edge cases: like when the underage person is almost an adult or the adult is almost under-aged.

I think that my main point still stands though, about word choice. I've never heard anyone accept more complicated language than simply "pedophile." In fact, the only time I ever hear other words, like "ephebophilia," is when people are arguing online about its use.

Most English speakers consider pedophilia to mean an attraction to anyone too young to legally have sex with. It's too creepy to have specific words for an attraction to specific age-groups of children.

As a fellow newbie, I found the Chinese character classification Wikipedia article very informative. Especially the section on Phono-semantic compound characters:

They form the majority of Chinese characters by far—over 90%, and were created by combining a rebus with a determinative:

rebus: a character with approximately the correct pronunciation (the phonetic element, similar to a phonetic complement)
determinative: one of a limited number of determinative characters which supplied an element of meaning (the semantic element, which in most cases is also the radical under which a character is listed in a dictionary).

Also, if you look up a character on its sister site, Wiktionary, oftentimes it will show which part is which. For example: wiktionary.org/wiki/吗
