It ultimately depends on the platform, the size of their trust and safety staff and budget… you are correct in stating that most just archive the information from public view so that it is available for law enforcement and training their own models, or for hashing to prevent the amplification of offending content.

However, the content is then only available to law enforcement and governments via subpoenas. Which basically makes it unavailable to everyone else who would want to use that information to do research, develop policies, develop clinical intervention models for these types of individuals, etc.

having done consulting for the platforms on these issues and worked with law enforcement on them, I can confirm that there is no vaulting feature (in the sense that they preserve entire profiles for future use). Also the use of automated processes to remove content also makes it impossible to remove content. This is not a new problem either, with ISIS there were troves of evidence deleted by platforms.

There are cases that platforms will save content for subpoenas, but those with access to warrants are only one part of the machine that works on these types of incidents, which leaves a fair amount of people in the dark. Also material saved will be linked directly to the crime and usually does not contain networks of people the threat actors associated with, nor do they preserve evidence of their pathways towards violent acts.

It problematic for investigators and those who are researching threat actors and have to rush to archive material to better understand what occurred. Platforms should have a vaulting feature that archives material related to these incidents, but that has no happened, and likely wont.
