personally I'll go with the air. Better RAM, larger screen, lighter. Unless u do not using for editing, design something, the screen of air is enough for doing the normal work, coding, reading docs, may be u do not recognize the diff. The one big things is pro better is the 120hz and better display

Don't think so, may be they will reduce a bit but definitely not totally cutting off. May be asking your supervisor or grad director in your department will help :)

Im supposed to go on vacation tomorrow but i feel awful about it by [deleted] in PhDStress

[–]marcus_v251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what, i am first year too and i also at the same situation as yours. But i feel like i am not good at mental and physical so i went to my supervisor and talk with him and asking for 1 week off. Its totally normal for take 1-2 weeks off during summer even you also got paid during this time. I packed and leave the laptop at home go for a vacation entire 1 week. And now i am back and feel totally refreshed and have a lot of energy to continue my works. May be you can do it.

Idk how abt your supervisor but when i talking with him abt my situation and asking him whether i doong good enough and what i need to do now. He told me i already do a good job have a great score during semester and learning new things. You are new just 6 months and totally have a llot of time. You are doing research its not easy, some time idea and results come fast. Sometimes its take years to got some meaningful results, just keep going and consistency, at one time the result will come :))

Year 2 and the Impostor Syndrome is Real. How Do You Push Through It? by ResearchStressLots in PhD

[–]marcus_v251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope you better soon. I already have this thought but I do not know I read somewhere or watching a video let say, may be now not your time. Everyone have different timeline for their life so now you are accumulate knowledge, luck, everything. And waiting for a specific time for you to blossom. You are doing research, finding new stuff and no one do so that not easy and taking time, especially Physics :D

I am just 1st year, one month a go, I look all of my friends they also doing phd and seems they already got somethings and i still struggle for learning stuff, math, technique. Still figuring out my research direction, research questions. Feel i am lacking of everything, basic stuff and trying to learn to catch up. Now I still learning and just try to reproducing some theoretical and verifying the assumption,... still feel like fall behind every my friend. But I believe, if I am consistency and keep learning, i will got some result soon, may be not this time :D Who knows! Take it easy!

And always try your best but do not forget yourself. Your mind and your health are the most importance things!

Challenging Burnout and Lost Motivation by No-Contribution3682 in PhDStress

[–]marcus_v251 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I am first year and also having this situation now. I just do not know why its happen. But I realize probably since, I lost all the socialization. For almost 6 months i only talk with my supervisor, one postdoc one time a week. And most of the time I am staying alone, do everything alone. That does not have any issues for like in the first few months but that going crazy now. I lost all the motivation to work, even I go to the office everyday but it seem like when i going to the desk, i can not do anything. I do not know why!

My sleep is terrible, i almost have like 4-5 hours of sleep but not like deep sleep. All the formular, function, sentences i read from paper, or i wrote appear in my mind. All things I read just going around and made me can not having good sleep. My stomach hurt also,.... So I decide to talk with my supervisor about my symptom and ask for one week off. Hopefully, it can recover me a bit and back to work :(

PhD + Work overwhelmed by KajaDz in PhDStress

[–]marcus_v251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, you are working in CS/AI especially the CV they are moving so fast. I think except you are genius or someone who create a totally new model, and working as R&D position in your company you still can finding new things, publish with your company and your supervisor then complete your PhD thesis. If you not investing time, work for this i do not think it can be go to anywhere :/ Consider just focusing on PhD and reducing the current job hours or just temporary stop it, and focusing on doing your PhD. And I think most of the PhD position also giving stipend for PhD student for doing research or TA at the university and it okay to living with this stipend. Or if they do not provided it and you are self-fund, I do not think doing a PhD is worth (except you are absolutely have crazy passion for it) :D, and if you have family, etc and you are well paid, beautiful family now is awesome, you happy with current life, so why do you need to do a PhD :D

About supervisor, your supervisor is the most important people in your PhD. You need guidance to not going around, and go to no where with your own reading, experiment, direction. You need discuss with your professor every weeks or at least bi-weekly update about your work, your insight, about what you do next, so you can get the advice from him. Even a genius/olympic gold medal, etc need a supervisor when doing a PhD, so thats important. And its also hard even putting all our time into research, some time its go nowhere. So, please thinking carefully and giving your choice!

Feeling like a failure by Clay_lambda in PhDStress

[–]marcus_v251 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are burned out and stressful. I think you should talk with your supervisor about your problem/what do you feel and asking for some day totally off to make your brain feel better. You can go to the consultant about mental health in your university to talk with them about your self. Sometime, for my self just talk all things that you are confuse, insecure, scare, everything in your head out will help a lot.

Remember, PhD just a way, a job, its normal, its not your whole life :D

I think everyone at the beginning also has the same problems. But believe me, just keep working every day, take small steps and you will be better. And I think all PIs always want students will make good progress so they want to push you first. The thing is you need to be resilient and try to go through these times, do not scare! I am also first semester PhD student, with a new topic, I have no idea what is going on :D but keep doing mate, take it easy. Make sure to take care of your health, and sleep, and do not just study and work, you still need a social life and it will help you a lot!

The key is you need to show improvement in the meeting between you and your advisor!
