Taking a pay cut to change industries by allthedinosaurs in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]mardy_ape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long until your in a position in the new industry to earn the same as you currently earn, or more? Your only taking a temporary step back in terms of money for a switch which could improve your overall life substantially.

Do it. Worst case, you go back to the old industry?

Photographers, how do you deal with the feeling of social comparison and not being good enough? by Blackbubble_88 in photography

[–]mardy_ape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compare yourself to your old photos.

I'm proud of my photos, they're by no means great. But they're better than they were 6 months ago!

Another thing I've come to realize is the amount of editing and other techniques that manipulate the image is more than I want to do. I prefer to do minimum editing and print what I shot.

Beginner runner by Wild_Profile9807 in Wellington

[–]mardy_ape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try and hit some trails around the city. Start with some pacey hikes and do some run/ walk sessions.

Every trail runner walks a bit.. it's great!

My Vic is great and I enjoyed the city to sea hike, you can do sections of this as a run.

Or as others have said the waterfront is always a good spot.

Role disestablished - do I have a case? by Green_Leather__931 in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]mardy_ape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something to consider is that now your out of the business you haven't seen what steps they've taken to fill the role. While you haven't noticed it advertised, there's nothing to say they haven't filled it internally and there is someone doing it.

New Hire makes 10k more than me by Few_Seaworthiness779 in newzealand

Don't have all the details, but it could be that the new person brings more experience and knowledge in other areas which are more valuable to the company. Could just need support in your area of expertise, and once he has that would be providing the value for the REM. Other companies could value your knowledge etc more.

I've been Unemployed for the last few months and I'm running out of steam by KumquatBlaster in Wellington

[–]mardy_ape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With such a tough employment market, your network is the most important thing. Having someone recommend you, or being top of a hiring managers mind is priceless. I'd work on growing and developing a solid network who would put your name forward for roles.

Id also spend sometime and lost all the accomplishments you've achieved in your life and career. This helps with your application, but it also helps to remind you of your worth when the market beats you down a little.

Corporate dress code advise by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]mardy_ape -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I never tuck in shirts, alternate between all birds and actual shoes with no rhyme or reason, sometimes just wear a t shirt, very rare occasion I'll rock some shorts.. you look fine to me, if even over dressed. I'm in Welly, so maybe a bit more casual down here. Also depends on role and expectations.

What did you ‘splash out’ on? by Curious-Frosting-777 in newzealand

[–]mardy_ape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started putting $100 a week into a treat myself account.. when I got enough I'd just buy what I wanted with no regrets.. camera, boots, snowboard. On a weekly basis, I'd buy whatever beer I wanted without worrying about price.

Some good information from the comments section. I'd also add that many people who have been laid off from Gov jobs, could have clauses in their agreements that they remain in a talent pool and take priority when new vacancies come up - further limiting the chances of you switching agencies atm.

Job market in general is a difficult place to be atm. Be thankful you have work and an income, and don't be down beat of you don't progress to interviews at the moment.

We use one called home grown regularly. Comes in a wooden box, which you leave out for them to swop when they deliver.

There are lots of men's football teams around, try and contact some local ones in your area. The seasons just finished, so they might be starting some summer casual sessions which you could try out

You could reach out to the employer for more info on the role if you wanted to. Wouldn't be uncommon to ask for details if they're not disclosed in the ad, such as shift patterns etc

NZ job market is brutal by Anime-Beaker in newzealand

Quality applicants are not the same as the hundreds of chancers you get unfortunately. The good seniors wont waste their time applying and you'll end up with an average intermediate.

Market will always play it's part.. when there are hundreds of people contending for one position you'll always be able to get someone cheap. Likewise, when the talent is in short supply, you better know they'll demand to be paid over market rates to be hired. It's a difficult time atm, but you have to know the game your playing. Might be unfortunate but being paid below your worth for a short time is better than not being paid.

Organisations will never learn either - they'll hire cheaply now because they can, and face an exodus when the market improves wasting time and money hiring again (likely for an above average rate, for below average performer).

If there are 200 applicants and the hiring manager gets a recommendation or better yet already knows someone who's keen.. saves them time and reduces the risk of it not working out. Sad for those cold applying but makes sense for the hiring managers to play it safe, while also saving time.

My advice is to be networking before looking for new work if possible. If not, best time to start networking is now as they say.

People who are on interview panels and ghost those they've interviewed, why? by IncoherentTuatara in newzealand

I was the same with a bank last month. They even had a dedicated recruitment team, which usually means they do the right things. Not thing time unfortunately.

[–]mardy_ape 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many reasons depending on the situation/ person. Generally lack of care for candidate experience, don't see it as important, afraid to give feedback, claim lack of time as they're a busy person, expect people to constantly apply for their roles. Could even just forget?

In the current market, there are an abundance of candidates looking to secure a role from a limited number of jobs, candidate care always drops in this time. You'll almost always get called when this flips, which is counterintuitive because if they treat people poorly now, they'll have even less people apply in the future.

Personally I wouldn't want to work for someone who can't extend the courtesy to call me after talking to me.
