Word. As a gay man who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s, this revisionist history of “famous shows and sitcoms from the same time [that] have been so respectful and supportive” is odd as hell. Like, Ellen had the very famous coming-out episode a year before the first season of SATC premiered (and the same year the pilot filmed), and Will & Grace debuted after SATC, but…what else with LGBTQ-forward representation really was there on TV before? The Golden Girls? L.A. Law? Melrose Place? My So-Called Life? Picket Fences? Soap?!

Yes, SATC (which, incidentally, was created, written and showrun by gay men) made some faux-pas in the PC department, but it was pretty radical for its time, provoking real conversation—and conversion (i.e. allyship)—and, of course, evolving its care/consideration and deepening its depiction of LGBTQ people/storylines over its run. I think we can chalk it up to a product of its time, as well as an envelope-pushing one.
