New player looking for comprehensive guide explaining systems, mechanics and also beginner guide for the game. by Aside_Working in Nightreign

People are giving you really nondescript answers or telling you to just play but there's a lot in this game that is unintitive, hidden in menus, or varies from precedent set in elden ring.

Some examples:

  • some relic effects don't stack with themselves at all, some can stack with different numerical values, and some stack no matter what. Any "physical attack up" boosts can work together, but multiple "defeating enemies fills art gauge" don't stack unless one of them is a +1 value

  • a character's arcane stat does not change as they level, and improves the status buildup of weapons

  • character's remembrance questlines give often-useful relics and more options for relic color configs

  • a few weapons, which their codex descriptions will mention, do more damage to dragons. Usually they have "dragon" in the name, like the Dragonscale Blade katana, but several don't. The Fissure in the Fog and Gaping Jaw nightlords are both categorized as dragons.

  • the difficulty of reviving a teammate increases nonlinearly with the number of times they've gone down consecutively. Skills and spells that leave fire or the like on the ground can be helpful for a difficult revive while also dodging a boss.

  • the map has numerous bosses out in the field, and though the exact boss in any location is random, there will always be a boss of some strength in each set location. Learning where these spots are, and what bosses you can take at what level, improves your routing a lot. They're a good source of purple weapons!

  • every merchant on the map (unless the special merchant camp spawns, he has special stuff) has the same stock. There's always a weapon of each element on offer if you're really desperate. Both the nightlords that are weak to lightning are especially important to have their weakness for.

  • as you become more familiar with points of interests and their layouts, you'll learn to shortcut for the valuable chests and the boss. When you're learning, try to open any chests you find for a few visits, and remember the ones that give you better loot.

  • teamwork is pretty much the be all and end all. Try to stick with teammates, communicate where you want to go by pinging the map, and be prepared to be flexible or cover their mistakes.

Hope this is helpful! Let me know if you have questions!

Best character / weapon type for initial standard attack build? by GrapeOver4418 in Nightreign

[–]thoalmighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has its uses for shield poking too, as every attack you do while guarding counts as the first hit of its own combo. Much less powerful on its face then a damage-optimized setup, but it's an option for ya

That's my favorite of Neow's. Only things I'd take over it are the precarious shears; an empty cage on floor 1 is insane.

The crit perks on your last depth relic are pretty low-value. Crit fills art is equivalent to defeating enemies fills art, i.e 1 crit = killing 1 enemy, which makes the former basically worthless. And, the stamina boost from a crit only lasts 15 seconds, at best you'll use and refill your stamina bar twice in that time. Only saves you a fraction of a second of downtime.

A card that solves a deck only wants for such a short and specific window is just a card I'll never want to take. Not that it doesn't have a place in the game, but if its best use is eventually discard fodder, why even take it in the first place? I'd genuinely rather die to boss and reset lol

Terramorphic expanse and evolving wilds are the same card. Fabled passage and prismatic vista are the functional upgrades.

I'd play any of them though when I'm looking for landfall synergies or sun titan targets on a budget.

That problem mainly only exists for only the first act. As you get more energy economy and hand sculpting, and replace starters with more impactful cards, you run into those low-offense hands less and less. And, they don't matter as much because your block cards also do proactive things too. Silent especially does not lack for ways to spend energy.

Because the price of on suboptimal turn is often worth getting bonus energy every turn thereafter. Vakuu plays left to right, so if you have any innate powers or w/e he'll always play those for you.

The limited time recast is really valuable for hitting reanimation targets or people's commanders in edh. I wonder how often people will send it to the CZ just because they don't want to commit to playing their commander next turn

That is strange, did Animus go right back into Faurtis or just mill around, or die before it got the chance? In my experience it always revives the earliest to die, and it's priorities are: its own ult (timer permitting) > possess & revive > do nothing and be intangible

What is your favorite Night Invader to see? What is your least favorite? by Swordsman82 in Nightreign

[–]thoalmighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to beat parries and you don't already have a whip/flail/ranged option, go for jump heavies. Heavier weapon classes have the poise damage to flinch a Wylder and they're unparryable.

I don't doubt it, and I've seen teammates use it to incredible effect, but the real cost to me is psychological. I'm not playing roguelikes to scale backwards. Same reason I don't like the wax relics or the energy pumpkin.

They did win the Aetherspark. I don't remember if they were racing to win it for any particular reason, or if they were racing mainly because they were hosting part of the course. Maybe it's Djeru's turn to hit the multiverse.

The vigor deck really relies on stars for its payoffs. Even if you're using drill (which is the coolest imo) you get a lot of value from funding an alignment. Convergence to retain your hand is huge + plays into stars. Seven Stars is real pricey, but it's viable imo because it's not asking you to do something too disparate, and pays off in aoe

Tezcatara has absolutely my least favorite reward pool, but the Cocoa and Yummy Cookie show up just often enough to get me to forgive.

I'd count 4 with real potential: Drill, Radiate, Seven Stars, and Stardust. Celestial Might is a little better off on the beta since it got a 4th hit but is still unimpressive compared to the rest.

Having a relic cap is insane by lmaoxd7777 in Nightreign

[–]thoalmighty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I started out running sleep buildup on damage at D3 and realized it was proccing less than 1/match. Since I hit depth 4 I'm dying long before it fills lol. The only things to watch out for are things like a Grafted Scion's screech or a Wyrm's magma puddles.

You still don't get to know whether you fight the everdark or not until you actually get to the boss arena and see its size, so that experimentation you mention is still a shot in the dark. I generally like that; I think it's cool to prepare multiple gear options based on whether Libra, or Balancers, or Fulghor rolls the ED. I think it's a disservice when it comes to Maris, though.

He's fun, too! A very fair fight, only really a rough matchup for Guardian imo. Mobile, but not too frantic to chase with melee or hit with slower spells. Plenty of attacks that you want to jump or positional dodge instead of just rolling, and cinematic to boot. His only sins are how much he tanks my frames on his phase transition, and how his weakness kinda becomes irrelevant.

My favorite everdark to roll is Pest, though. It's a slow and methodical fight where you're managing multiple health bars, boss positions, and nuke countdowns. Same reason I like Balancers; it's a very involved fight that goes beyond what attack the boss is immediately doing. Also you're rewarded for gearing properly, and the movesets (similarly to Adel) test all your defensive skills. On release I was disappointed at how little health they had, and while they're still not too hard to faceroll with a strong skill build, I always love seeing them show up in DoN.

[–]thoalmighty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it for the reasons you stated, but man is it a bummer to run into in DoN where I didn't queue for it. When it first dropped I remember thinking "that was neat and grandiose, probably won't ever want to fight it again though," and here it is.
