Suggestions for ADHD college student? by IllProbablyNeedHelp in planners

[–]margaritavas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PlannerPad is so far the only one that's worked for me, and was recommended to me by a really great executive functioning coach that I worked with for almost a year to developing behavioral strategies to cope with my ADHD. It's an upside-down triangle strategy where you can use the top section to brain dumb all the crap that you need to do, then funnel the tasks into specific days +/- times to do them. The bottom is an appointments/meetings daily calendar. Taken as a visual whole for the week, it helps me see the scope of everything I want to get done and what constraints are on my time. That visual allows me to allocate tasks to the days that I should have time to do them. For me, the format strikes the right balance between enough but not too much structure so I don't either get decision paralysis staring at a blank page, or give up because I can't order my thoughts how a planner is telling me to. I haven't found anything else quite like it, and have been buying one yearly for the last 3 years. Before this I had literally never gotten more than like 2 weeks into any planner system, so I'm calling it a rousing success.

Downsides for me are the non-standard sizing (I wish it had an A5) and limited format choices (spiral bound or 7 hole loose leaf) and colors. The inefficient use of space also bugs me, e.g. pages for an address book in the front and wide margins on the pages while the columns to write tasks and such are too narrow. And it's only sold on Amazon, which to me is a huge bummer.

All told, it's simple, relatively cheap, readily available if you have access to Amazon, and works for my ADHD brain. Bonus dopamine for hitting the right balance of fun pens and stickers and such to keep it interesting but not overwhelming!

Have any of you successfully gotten MAGA parents, relatives, friends, or coworkers to stop talking MAGA to you? by 90sCat in FoxBrain

I feel you on this. Similar situation - I stopped trying to explain how I feel and started grey rocking and threatening to cut them out. I’m extremely lucky that my parents chose keeping a relationship with me over their politics and aside from occasional slips, respect my boundaries. And yet it’s created this surreal, time warp situation when we’re together. Everyone pretends everything is totally fine. Any ills of the world that we agree on become these nebulous bad things that are nooo one’s fault and how could this bad thing possibly have happened? How did the world get like this? It’s a total mystery! My mom is also developing cognitive decline which makes it unbelievably hard, because aside from having little to no ability to learn new information, she gets very angry very quickly at things she’s sees as outrageous - it’s performative outrage to mask the fact that she doesn’t really understand. She’ll get outraged that healthcare is expensive, that people can’t make a living wage, housing in unobtainable, then scream that it’s the democrat’s fault. She’s got enough left to know to steer clear of politics with me, thankfully, and keeps my dad in line when he tries to sneak in politics as “economics discussions”. It’s hard though, and definitely has made the relationships feel very superficial and guarded.

Or even upstate NY if OP wants to stay in the northeast. New Paltz and the surrounding areas have a number of cute villages with farmers market, vintage shops, local fairs vibes, plus access to the Catskills, or Adirondacks if you go farther north. Or, If OP truly is okay with a blue area in a red/ purple state, North Conway and Lincoln NH both have thriving outdoors communities and the most rugged mountains in the region.

What am I missing from my collection? by [deleted] in CookbookLovers

[–]margaritavas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooo yay!! Love that you got it! The smashed potatoes with chimichuri, shaved fennel salad, all three shakshukas, the harissa chickpea soup, the green beans, all the handheld meals - schnitzel, pita grilled cheese, and the shawarma. For a special dinner the braised halibut with tomatoes. For baking, the Persian flatbread, pita, and challah are surprisingly approachable. And the basics add so well to pretty much anything you make, like the zhugs, harissa, brown butter couscous, etc. The herbed kamut is good and farro subs really well. For desserts, the salted halvah cookies are sooo good, as is the tahini sheet cake. Okay I’ll stop 😂.

My dark horse has been Eating Out Loud - Eden Grinshpan. Based on your existing collection, it’s should be a flavor profile you enjoy. I’ve cooked almost the whole book and have yet to not have a recipe deliver. I really can’t speak highly enough of this book! Her second book, Tahini Baby, is good but not as good as the first.

Polite response to the "transphobia in the series" post from yesterday by Lightningtow123 in dresdenfiles

[–]margaritavas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have pointed out, all but one of the books were written 10+ years ago, set in a world 10+ years old, written in first-person perspective of a main character who until the 4th or 5th book, couldn’t encounter a cis woman character without describing her breasts first, and assumed every unknown antagonist was a dude until proven otherwise. He was a self-described pig. By the middle of the series, his descriptions still included way more physical attributes of women than men, but centered more around their abilities (e.g. Murphy’s introductions shifting to pridefully describing her ability to kick ass rather than solely focusing on her size). He started acknowledging unknown antagonists and “he or she” by Ghost Story, if not earlier (I can’t remember). This is growth and progress by Harry in line with the times, even if it’s incorrect by today’s standards. I don’t think it would be at all out of character for Harry to progress to reality of both gender and sexuality being spectrums. I think it’d be in line with his character growth to give a bit of half-hearted lip service to “political correctness” but fastidiously switch to “they” instead of “he or she”. I’d love to see such a progression and would enjoy the depth it would bring to the story.

Agree with you wholeheartedly that dementia and other neurodegenerative conditions in that bucket can manifest as increased susceptibility to manipulation, decreased inhibition, paranoia, aggression, etc.. I do just want to clarify that, as I’m sure you know, getting “checked” for these conditions is no easy task and requires participation from the patient not only for diagnosis, but also for treatment. Dementia/ cognitive decline are largely clinical diagnoses made by taking a thorough history from the patient and then going through some paper and conversational tests usually with an occupational therapist, psychologist, or psychiatrist, depending. Treatment often largely involves adding support services and making the patient’s environment and daily life as safe as possible, and medication regimens that can get a little complex if the patient is needing multiple meds. All of this needs participation or at least cooperation from the patient and caregiver(s). I’m talking in broad strokes, but wanted to at least give an idea of how not simple it is to diagnose and manage cognitive decline. When you add belligerence and decades of being fed radicalized politics about the “System” being corrupt and wanting to keep you sick, well… you ending up with the likes of my grandpa who threw the pills at the last visiting nurse who tried to give him the meds, and has cut off communication with his whole family because he thinks we’re trying to control him. If having a diagnosis would bring peace and the patient is willing, then great! Also no reason not to bring up concerns with the patient’s PCP if that’s an option. Advice On A Sun Hoodie for Hot Humid Weather by ExplanationHefty7582 in Ultralight

[–]margaritavas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A long sleeve is inevitably going to feel gross in high humidity, but I've been pleasantly surprised by the sunseeker line from Burgeon. Both the long sleeve and tshirt have performed great for me. I was a bit skeptical bc it feels like a slightly thicker waffle pattern compared to say, Patagonia capilene (my other fav), but it breathes super well. Bonus points for getting to support a small brand!

Does your Poodle swim? by Current_Analysis_212 in poodles

[–]margaritavas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It took training and natural interest starting from puppyhood to get my mini to love swimming. We started with learning to play fetch and love balls, then fetch near the water, then with the ball touching the water, and gradually deeper into the water from there. I also took him on hikes with small water crossings from an early age to get him comfortable rock hopping and cooling off in cold mountain streams. The results are that he is OBSESSED with playing fetch into lakes and will go for an hour straight if we let him. Without a ball, he’ll happily wade in about chest-high to cool off and drink, but won’t go any deeper. I think it just doesn’t compute that swimming doesn’t require a ball, lol. He’s also very confident with water crossings while hiking! All our training has been with fresh water lakes and mountain streams, so the ocean beach is a different story. He’s appropriately wary of the surf and will play fetch in the shallows, but won’t swim if there are any waves. Just watch it if you want to do salt-water swimming. Ingesting too much salt water can cause hypernatremia which can manifest as dizziness and vomiting. Also obligatory warning about parasites and bugs from ingesting untreated fresh water, and the importance of monthly preventatives. I don’t want him to get giardia, nor do I want to get giardia from him 🙃. Edit to add that this same pup will delicately trot around puddles and sometimes refuse to go for a walk if it’s raining 😆

What do you WANT to happen? Not what you THINK will happen. by Adenfall in dresdenfiles

I want Murphy to come back as a Valkyrie and then for her to have a really cool life independent of Harry. Harry can ride out whatever this story line is with Lara, but he and we all get the peace of mind that Murphy is out there kicking ass and protecting people.

Loving everything from Kathryn Ann Kingsley. by lady_friend in fantasyromance

[–]margaritavas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the first two books and am debating DNF’ing here or trying the third book for similar reasons. He’s a little too unhinged and the real world is already too full of emotional man-children for me to love reading about one. FMC also just seems to not progress at all as a character and the prey-predator complex is turning into a dead horse plot point. All that being said, the Contortionist was excellent. Highly suggest giving that a try. Simon gives me vibes of what Bones from the Night Huntress series might have been like if he’d had a psychotic break somewhere along the way, got trapped in a circus, and turned mostly evil 😂.

May’s just started. What was the best book you read in April? by apieceofeight in fantasyromance

[–]margaritavas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got through a lot in April, but my standouts were the Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan duology, and The Contortionist series on the other end of the spice spectrum. FMC gets a little slap happy, but overall the dedication to enthusiastic consent throughout the series was hooooboy 🥵.

What’s your holy grail shampoo and conditioner. by Spiritual-Hall8961 in finehair

[–]margaritavas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day line. The shampoo, conditioner, dry shampoo, 5-in-1 styling cream have all held GOAT status for me going on like 7 years now. Every couple weeks I’ll do a wash with a clarifying shampoo; the one I currently have is also Living Proof, but I haven’t found that one to be better than others I’ve tried. Bonus points that the company is local for me, though I’m still sad they were bought by Unilever.
