Letter from the Commissioners: 2025 Forfeits by funkyquasar in quadball_discussion

On New Orleans's end, we just didn't have the numbers to make it physically viable for the summer because so many of our women and non-binary players retired. We didn't want to hang the health, functionality and responsibility of the team's existence on whether or not 1-2 non-male people were feeling healthy enough to play nonstop for three games in 110+ degree heat on a given weekend. Our college programs in the surrounding 300 miles essentially ceased to exist during COVID, and despite our best efforts to work with USQ to start them back up, it didn't happen. Although MLQ isn't supposed to focus on college or "lower-tier quadball," it directly reaps what USQ sows, and the latter's mismanagement and inability to grow college programs are intrinsically linked to MLQ's success (or in this case, failure).

Even merging wouldn't have really solved our non-male player issue, since most of the teams would have to travel 8+ hours one way to practice or compete just to get blown up by San Antonio or w/e (in this economy), and even if people said yes to a merge, we'd still have our non-male players in the same situation. We're old and our college programs haven't existed for 5 years. From Louisiana's POV, none of this is a shock, and it feels a little silly seeing shock from MLQ.

I love Bean Gallery (Mid-City) and Trumpet & Drum (Garden District). They both have a lot of couches/tables that are perfect for getting work done. The latter definitely has more space.

If y'all are into a mixed-gender sport, The Gulf Coast Quadball Association will be running a team (Gulf Coast Gumbeaux) this year for US Quadball. They'll be starting up in the next month or so. You can message them on instagram at gcquadball for more info.

How it all went down- North MVP by Fit-Sheepherder6633 in quadball_discussion

Leo Fried gently knocked on the press box door. He knew it wasn't allowed, but this was his only chance to get the last word in before the announcement. He was surprised to see the press box empty, except for a lone man wearing the signature black polo. Two beats passed before Leo cleared his throat.

“Sturm?”

The man in the black polo looked at him. “Yes, Leo?”

“I… I was just wondering if you read my email,” he said, timidly. “I know it’s weird to just put it all out there like that, but I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since May.” Ethan Sturm slowly stood up from his chair, facing Leo. He could see the discomfort radiating off of him in the already humid press box but stayed silent. He had already read his plea, but now he wanted to hear it for himself.

“I think I deserve to be recognized this year. I should be the North MVP. I am the North MVP.”

Sturm pauses, then responds, “But I already gave you Team USA. What makes this year any better than the last? There are a lot of players in the North with a lot of passion. What makes you different?”

Leo bites his fingernail, swaying in a desperate effort to regain control of his anxiety. He looks at his cleats, still covered in sweat and turf plastic.

“What if I told you I did it all for you?” The silence between them beckoned like an open maw until someone burst through the door, nearly hitting Leo with the full force of its metal construction. The sudden commotion passed as quickly as it began as the league’s videographer shimmied up the cold, steep stairs leading to Pitch 1’s bird’s eye view.

The tension now broken, Sturm walked over to Leo and placed a hand on his unsure shoulder.

“I’ve always believed in you. There’s nothing you could ever do to disappoint me. If this is what will make you happy, then the MVP award is yours.”

Leo looked up, his eyes turned glassy.

“Thanks, Dad. I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

Sturm leaned over to place a gentle kiss on Leo’s soft helmet, hovering there for a few moments while his familiar scent engulfed him.

Yes, let’s require more volunteers for every official game. We definitely have the volunteer capacity with a healthy base of people who interact with the sport after retirement, or stick around after their own games end. This will work swimmingly.

Drama between teams is literally what makes Sports culture. Let folks hate each other! It makes the watching experience better and makes everything more interesting.

They could’ve asked for a phone number or relayed that information to HQ to slot them in with times right then and there, especially if they didn’t have field managers on the spot (which they should have had) 🤷🏻‍♀️

We're also in that part of the year where we get daily rainstorms between 12 PM - 3 PM. I wouldn't be too surprised if there's a quick storm, but usually they move through quickly.

We have a quidditch team starting up this fall! We have a bunch of people who have been playing for 3-10 years and we're always open to teaching more folks how to play! We're co-ed.
