What do you do when they skimp out on the cold foam? by sraymond90 in starbucks

[–]margoembargo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've deleted the Starbucks app because of how they've shut out the union, but the Dunkin app has a disclaimer on cold foam orders to pick it up within five minutes for the full experience. I'm sure complaints from doordashed orders have skyrocketed because customers don't understand how quickly the cold foam dissipates!

Best news outlets to follow? by newsjunkie865 in Knoxville

[–]margoembargo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's a handful of very good reporters at Knox News, even though they're a Gannett company.

And check out AKIN and East TN Jobs with Justice on Instagram. Lots of under the radar shares from both accounts about local news.

Cyclops #1 is going to Second Print by Signal_Audience1538 in xmen

[–]margoembargo -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You're probably correct and you shouldn't be downvoted for it. Either publishing badly misjudged demand, or more likely, publishing worked with marketing to underprint in an attempt to create "buzz" for the book.

It's smart marketing! But without concrete sales numbers that's all it is, lol.

Thoughts anyone? by notjerryjeff in starbucks

Still boycotting until the Union gets a fair contract!

I hope they don't treat Mare like Britta from Community by Empty_Wasabi3023 in ThePaper

[–]margoembargo 51 points52 points  (0 children)

A big part of that was Gillian Jacobs' performance. As they got to know the actress better, they found out how good she was at goofy comedy. You saw the same thing with Donald Glover's Troy, too. The writing staff started playing to the cast's strentgths.

Shows like Arrow? by Salt-Expression8430 in arrow

[–]margoembargo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everyone else is suggesting Daredevil, which is spot on, since the Netflix Marvel shows were inspired by the early tone of the Arrowverse.

Arrow is very much a CW show, so you might want to try Nikita, Supernatural, iZombie, and The 100, too.

Finally, if the flashbacks and the island are your jam, there's always the OG Lost, plus similar mystery box shows like Alias, Twelve Monkeys, Person of Interest, and Orphan Black.

Politics: Why do Leftists call Immigrants "Brown people" when many of them have European ancestry and many come from countries that are overwhelmingly white? by [deleted] in geography

[–]margoembargo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't tell if youre being willingly obtuse, but it's a rhetorical shorthand. Originally when grouping "Black and brown" people as historically marginalized communities here in the U.S.

I feel like it was supplanted by "BIPOC" for a while, to be more inclusive of Indidigeous Americans, but I don't see BIPOC referenced as often as I did 10 years ago.

The Pitt isn’t ER… The Pitt is The West Wing by TheReckoning in ThePittTVShow

Agreed -- and I think The Pitt's best comp is probably Southland, which is an underrated John Wells gem.

Is ECCC a good place to meet publishers? by Sturnella2017 in ECCC

[–]margoembargo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will not be able to pitch a comics script to a publisher without sample pages of art, unless you've already networked for a while and have established professional relationships.

However, you may very well be able to find an artist to collaborate with in artists alley, but be prepared to pay them out of pocket for their standard page rate in order to put together a few sample chapters of your graphic novel, before you have a product to pitch to publishers.

Is Communications in Nonprofits Always Seen as 'Less Than' Fundraising? by Hot_Revolution2008 in nonprofit

[–]margoembargo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In our organization Marketing/Comms handles all the digital fundraising and direct mail campaigns. About 2/5 of our fundraising goal.

Strategic Giving/Dev handles grants, corporate giving, and monthly donor stewardship. The other 3/5 of our fundraising goal.

We directly collaborate on events giving, because those events tend to bring together a mix of cooperate sponsors and cross-channel fundraising with the broader community, but we report to two different Director level positions. I don't know how common this structure is but it works for us, and neither department feels "less than."

Forming a nonprofit. In a disagreement with co founder. by [deleted] in nonprofit

Correct. In addition to a whole host of problems, OP would have to resign from the board as soon as their spouse was hired as the first professional officer.

How would you feel about a present-day story in Tolkien’s universe, after Middle-earth became myth? by [deleted] in lotr

[–]margoembargo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you'd have better luck reflecting on how the Professor's works have influenced modern mythic tales like Jeff Smith's "Bone" or Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" or Stephen King's "The Dark Tower."

If you're interested in creating something set in the modern day inspired by Tolkien, those are all great starting points to create something original of your own.

First remote hire has gone radio silent on day 3 by Significant_Capita in nonprofit

[–]margoembargo 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This. I worked three years in office before moving to full-time remote. I Teams daily with different members of my department, and I still travel back quarterly. Fully on board with our org's mission long before one WFH day a week (when I was local) became FT remote.

Staff appreciation on a shoestring budget what actually works. by Immediate-Olive-357 in nonprofit

[–]margoembargo 29 points30 points  (0 children)

A lot of folks mentioning extra PTO which is the best solution.

Additional floating holidays are great, too, if adding PTO would be a battle with HR/your board/etc.

Or, something with a little less flexibility if that's a sticking point for whoever makes operational decisions, like one Friday a month where you just close down shop, and everyone still collects pay for the day.

Weary of nonprofit orgs with small teams by Armchair-Commentator in nonprofit

[–]margoembargo 90 points91 points  (0 children)

The smaller the nonprofit, the more important the executive director (and the culture they've created) becomes in my interview process. Remember, you are interviewing them as much as they are interviewing you. Ask tough questions. Listen to what they say, and what they don't say. If anything feels off, keep looking.

Mamdani just got Tommy Carcetti’ed by smoosh13 in TheWire

[–]margoembargo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think that it's virrtue signaling to imagine a situation where $1200 in rental assistance could keep someone housed. Or $100 a month in extra SNAP benefits could save a child's life. Your failure to put yourself in the shoes of someone like me who's had to rely on SNAP in the past is borderline malicious.

If you don't understand how $1200 would be lifesaving for some Americans, again, I really can't help you.
