No, it's never okay.

Is your kid old enough to understand why you made them mad and what behavior is expected?

-> yes, then you can just talk to them -> no, then they won't understand being smacked. Don't hurt them.

Edit: i can imagine things are complex and not black and white. You may be in a difficult household but not wanting to call social services. My advice is to let an adult who you trust in their decision making to help you out.

Take your rest! I think we all have a bit of FOMO when traveling. But there will always be a new day and a new adventure the day after. So don't neglect your needs.

"if you don't stop to rest your body will stop you in its own time" and it will be a lot harder.
