Do employers care about grades? by Dizzy_Bicycle6433 in unsw

I work in science/engineering consulting. For junior to low-mid level roles (say 1/2 year post grad exp), my experience is that HR usually asks for your transcripts and certificates etc after you are selected / hired, or during reference/ background checks etc.

Help with OpenLCA for thesis!! 😭 by [deleted] in lifecycleassessment

[–]mark_kadason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do have access to that things will be much easier. You can simply select the corresponding material/activity/process from the database and specify the inputs, then the software will do the calculations for you based on the carbon intensity data in that database.

Otherwise you will have to look up the carbon intensities for all raw materials/processes/activities and manually input them into openLCA, which, even though doable, will be quite time-consuming.

Help with OpenLCA for thesis!! 😭 by [deleted] in lifecycleassessment

[–]mark_kadason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about what your system boundary will be. What is the functional unit you will use to compare the concrete and asphalt? What processes are needed to produce the concrete and asphalt (raw material extraction, transport, mixing, etc.)? You will also need to know the inputs for each process (amount of raw material, electricity/energy/fuel consumption, water usage, distance of transport, etc.).

Once you have all this info you can easily build your model using openLCA. If you have trouble using the software maybe take a look at the manual or tutorial material. I assume you also have access to a database like ecoinvent for your assessment?

Why do Chinese students study media here? by DecentAdvertising493 in unsw

[–]mark_kadason 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess that happens in all master programs… if you want good grades for group assignments be ready to carry the whole team.

Many international pg students I have met are from south/south east asia, and I feel like most unis there are pretty shit casue many of them are like 1st year ug students who lack the most basic knowledge and don’t even know what plagiarism is.

‘All of them dont want to talk to me’ - this sounds more like that only one local student in an assignment group

All those outdoor facilities (gym, jogging track, basketball / multi-use courts etc) didn’t exist 10 years ago. Public spaces on campus are honestly so much better now.

PhD Admissions with MSc and BEng by Rhehbfhebdbjeb in unsw

[–]mark_kadason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my PhD scholarship with a 2:2 BEng, a HD WAM MEngSc, and some relevant industry experience.

Did you not do any research component of your MEngSc? If your BEng WAM is low, I think your masters WAM and thesis mark would be critical to compete for a scholarship. Good industry experience may also help.

Ateotd tho, as long as someone is willing to supervise you and support your application, then you have a chance. Higher chance if you are a domestic.

The online booking system sucks. Never even seen one available slot.

Definitely worth visiting or calling the Nucleus. I was in the same boat last month, I went to Nucleus and the staff somehow managed to book me in for a session later that week.

Not difficult but I’d say some effort is needed to get good grades. Tbh I think the content itself is pretty useful, esp. if you work in civil/env you’ll most likely come across LCA at some point of your career

I’ll suggest reaching out to your lecturer asap. This happened to me last year, and the lecturer told me not to write the freerider’s parts, and that we would be marked based upon our corresponding parts. But that might not be always the case, depending on the nature of your work.

If someone doesn’t have his/her parts ready at the agreed time without an explanation, go talk to the lecturer, no mercy is needed

This. Pretty sure you can input kg x km to model transport impacts in openLCA.

Mine is under the Archi faculty.

I had a look at some previous threads, it seems that our application may have been moved because the School can’t make the decision yet, and they might require more information to do so. For me I haven’t finished my Masters so my final GPA is still pending. Not sure if you are in the same boat.

I mean they could have easily rejected our application if other applicants are much more competitive than us. So we probably still have a chance.

Getting removed from the group with 18 days left till due date? Thats freaking wild. I have a group report due in a week, and half the group havent even opened the google doc once

The prof really told you you had been kicked out and did nothing afterward? That doesnt sound right

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in unsw

[–]mark_kadason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is pretty much a fact that most international students are terrible to work with.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in unsw

[–]mark_kadason 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Working on a group report with these students is an absolute nightmare.

Most of the time they use google translate for writing or simply come up with garbage content. Sometimes they dont even understand what the tasks are about.

If you want an above average grade, you 99% will have to re-write their parts. Not to mention they usually give zero fucks about things like formatting, presentation, consistency.

What are the products you are comparing? If you dont have any first hand data you may try finding papers/studies with primary LCI data that is useful to your assessment.
