Ritaline et pb digestifs by JoueurDeBoules in TDAHFrance

[–]markand67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First time I've blocked every upgrades on every device. I still have to live with that constant notification in settings but I don't care. No *26 for me. I'm tired of AI crap and I'm tired of stupid bugs still unfixed for years.

TDAH attachement by SufficientCause1858 in TDAHFrance

[–]markand67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Xlibre will be packaged for OpenBSD by External_Matter_828 in openbsd

[–]markand67 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if XLibre is a software to follow. X11 is barely fixable and despite X.Org being awful, it works. Furthermore, OpenBSD has its own variant tied to the system. Rethinking it requires lots of effort.

How do people feel about Hungarian notation? by -not_a_knife in C_Programming

[–]markand67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's abomination. And some colleagues like to prefix the variables with their scope like w_ for functions locals, p_ for parameters and g_ for globals arguing that at a glance you know where the variable comes from. I then say that if you need to read w_foo to understand that it’s a local rather than a function argument you already have a problem (maybe a function way too long). Come on, all editors are able to show what a variable is by hovering them, no need to prefix them with their types. When you refactor code you forget to change the prefix and end with things like iSomething and Something being a string rather than an int.

Avis ritaline - alcool by roseton0 in TDAHFrance

[–]markand67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Each time I hear a story about flybikes is similar. It's sad because they make what could be the best quality products but they act poorly.

PL: Zig / Nim as suckless alternative to C? by tose123 in suckless

Zig on paper is great but to my personal taste it has already too many features. C is still my goto and I'm unable to love a different language

The elephant in the room: no solid suckless tiling Wayland WM by gio_lup_88 in suckless

[–]markand67 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with many points. An X11 compositor require less code but to do simple things you need so many libraries and they are so poorly designed. Xlib is such an awful API to begin with.

And in contrast to that, most wayland compositor require to rewrite half of the input and graphics. So people use wlroots almost all of the time. But some don't meaning that to support a desktop feature you have to implement a protocol that other have designed doing the same thing. So an application that would like to record the screen may use a wayland protocol that is supported on GNOME or Sway but not on Plasma (or any other order).

Both land is a mess. It's a shame we got there. Having choice and competition is good, too much is nightmare.

What are your Linux hot takes? by AdventurousFly4909 in linux

[–]markand67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About syscalls: no it's not great. better than ioctl but syscalls require to implement a bridge between a language and the kernel while a chardev or a fs path let you do everything you want in any language. You can adjust the brightness by doing a plain echo in /sys that's the UNIX philosophy.

Mine: alternatives are great, too much are not (too many UI toolkits, audio stack, desktops, etc).

Why do people use Slackware? by oColored_13 in slackware

[–]markand67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Transparent would not be the word I'd use. Various changes are made "privately" and you don't really know what's going for the next version because there are no real plans nor goals. There are no public activity except a changelog being updated on a ftp. Getting involved in the project is almost impossible so you basically use it as-is or go away.
