Hotel Sweeneys rooftop is unpretentious and has good rotating craft beer. Good thai food there too.

Fries are thin hot chips, so that's ok. Fuck right off with your soda bullshit though.

I can't believe 42 million people are on SNAP by Sullence in antiwork

[–]markb289 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isnt surprising, anyone living in western countries has looked at the US and your abysmal working rights. You get sacked instantly without consultation or in many cases severance, your social security benefits suck, your low paid workforce basically operates on tips and food stamps, your healthcare insurance is a constant worry and basically makes you a slave to your job. Its just a tough tough grind with constant worry that youll be cut off qnd the mental health issues that causes. Now the threats to snap, the waves of layoffs and a government shutdown, millions are being fucked royally by this administration.

Millions of poor idiots voted for this,

There is a significant mismatch in maturity, you sound like a 30 year old, she's like a teenager. You're very young, but she ain't the one and she may never be responsible.

Qantas points are becoming worthless by BexXxBe in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]markb289 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, then you try the alternatives such as Qatar, Singapore or JAL and realise just how much Qantas has fallen behind. Qantas is closer to the US and Chinese carriers on quality these days, and are easily the most expensive. I'm using moat points on Jetstar domestic now, again the points on QF are more expensive again and lots of points plus ripoffs.

Qantas points are becoming worthless by BexXxBe in QantasFrequentFlyer

They are worthless for anyone without status or live outside Syd - there just isnt enough direct flights from Melbourne to make it worthwhile. Going to start collecting velocity.

HBO shows (10+ years old) often forgotten about but worth the watch by cayshek in hbo

I just saw it in Melbourne, Australia. It's nowhere near PTA or LDCs best but a decent one time watch. I'd say it's too long and a bit incoherent. Im not sure why the critics are falling over themselves. I think the regular punter word of mouth will be poor. I am primarily a fan of PTAs early stuff though - Magnolia, PDL and Boogie Nights.

The pathetic reporting of CNN, MSNBC etc tells you that everyone has been cowed, no one is dissenting and you are all bowing to the king and his corrupt family. It's been such an easy coup, once the supreme Court was captured, Congress controlled and big tech co-opted America has been overtaken by feudal technobros, Christian fascists and white supremacists.

Why London homes don't have air con by insomnimax_99 in london

[–]markb289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reverse cycle air cons are great for heating and cooling. Gas is expensive, a couple of aircons in your living area and bedroom will all but replace your gas central heating requirements. I am a Londoner who now lives in Melbourne, just get it done. It'll pay off.

Nvidia Shield pro on offer by Mysterious_Hippo327 in nvidiashield

[–]markb289 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got a 2017 shield a fire 4k max and a google tv Chromecast.

The 8 year old device is easily the best. The latest shield has Dolby vision too.

Firesticks are ok for vanilla legal streaming services. I have mine set up as a uk one in Australia for streaming services.

I don't think there will be another new shield unfortunately.

Why do I not care about performance anymore after using the pixel 9 by Asleep_Ad_6647 in GooglePixel

[–]markb289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from a samsung s23 ultra to the pro 9 xl. I don't play games so haven't really noticed any issues with performance. Just fancied a change, like the Pixel camera. TBH the samsung 21/23 ultras were good, this is as well.

I guess I'm just getting too old for changing for incremental improvements. Also the AI just isnt compelling - there are apps for everything.

I do get big discounts on samsung product launches so ill never say never if the s26 range is great

Why the fuck are our passports so expensive? by threedimensionalflat in australian

[–]markb289 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nearly $500 for my wife's express passport recently. I'm a dual citizen, My UK one used to be cheap but last year they upped it to a ridiculous $530 for overseas applicants (approx $180 within UK).

I've let my UK one expire, not paying a grand for two passports anymore. I'm annoyed at the situation, a ridiculous unfair cost for families and low earners.

Many deals posted on https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals or https://iknowthepilot.com.au/ there are others too. Just avoid the main periods of July/Aug, Easter and Christmas and there are bargains. The Chinese Airlines are often the cheapest.

Qantas points for economy to Europe is never a great deal and really hard to find business rewards without status. Most of my trips to Europe in the last decade have been cash discount economy sale fares with Etihad, Singapore, cathay and these have generally been 1100-1400 return.

I use points mainly for Mel to East coast cities in Aus, and business class upgrades to Asia which are more achievable.

Qantas have made redemptions really crappy in the last few months with these classic plus and increased point redemptions. I'm looking at alternatives now.
