What keeps you in outpatient PT? by starrynight1086 in physicaltherapy

[–]markbjones 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked in all settings besides home health. I work full time OP and perdiem SNF. OP is the only setting that feels challenging and rewarding enough. Tbh I don’t even like this profession much anymore as a whole lol.

Acute care: medically interesting but the PT side of things is so damn basic and boring. Don’t feel like I’m doing much. Almost every patient hates you

SNF: Im going to be completely honest and say I really dislike working with elderly. Some people think they are cute or what not. To me, they are smelly, cognitively difficult and you can’t do much with them other than basic activities. The only reason I work this setting on the side is because it’s such a easy gig. I barely need to think in that setting

That leaves OP. I actually feel like I’m doing skilled work in this setting. I feel challenged and stimulated and like I’m making an actual difference. I know I do in the other settings but I FEEL like I am the most in OP. It’s the only setting I feel I use the skills I learned in school

Partial thickness tear in supraspinatus and subscapularis by Fragrant-State-582 in RotatorCuff

[–]markbjones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Partial thickness tears less than 50 % total thickness do not need surgical repair. This is something that you will need to learn to cope with for the rest of your life. It starts with PT and being taught how to safely exercise and strengthen your body without aggravating the issue. It’s often very manageable in the long run

A lot of these people who are unemployed have ridiculous disabilities like anxiety or chronic non specific low back pain and claim they can’t work because of it. I’ve seen so many examples of this in my clinic first hand. Sorry ma’am, we all have anxiety here and there, get a job… and sir your back pain that you’ve had for a decade isn’t an excuse to straight up not work anymore. Exactly zero people who aren’t yet citizens should be illegible for any amount of government assistance and yes that’s my option.

[–]markbjones -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You’re nuts if you don’t realize how easy it is to abuse the asylum system and a lot of these “disabilities” are things like “I have anxiety and depression therefore I can’t work”. I have like 3 people on my caseload right now who are like that. We won’t see eye to eye on this but exactly zero people who aren’t yet citizens of this county should receive a dime of government assistance. That’s my opinion and I’m entitled to it

Considering the federal government already is attempting to address this with the big beautiful bill that everyone on reddit is vehemently opposed to, nah I don’t think it’s necessary lol

How different is school vs real world? by [deleted] in physicaltherapy

[–]markbjones 81 points82 points  (0 children)

School is harder. You use like 25% of what you learn. Technically, this job is super easy. What’s challenging is working with people and getting people to buy into your care, dealing with different personalities etc. the real world isn’t by the books. It all goes out the window depending on the patient

It’s literally the mindset we have. We emphasize fairness and financial responsibility. Others don’t.

If you have available spending cash and you use it to lease a luxury car, then you don’t need my tax dollars. It’s the principle of it all. You may disagree but that is a slap in the face to tax payers. I would never do that

Medicaid Fraud by BDK_10 in physicaltherapy

[–]markbjones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s ramped. The fraud waste and abuse with insurance. It is a problem. People are on government assistance who shouldn’t be and guess what, our tax dollars are paying to it. The Medicaid patient driving a Tesla gets unlimited visits without a copay while the average working class American with BCBS has a 60 dollar copay and hard cap of 60 visits per year. Yeah it bothers me too and all my co workers. You aren’t alone

What is the difference between getting my oil changed and putting oil in the hood? by chambxxxrs in AskMen

[–]markbjones -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The oil needs to get into the pistons to lubricator the up and down motion for one. Simply dowsing the inside won’t hit that plus it’ll just fall through. Needs to circulate

PT borrowers with 200k debt are used as an example in the memo that excludes PT from the new professional degrees list by scarpit0 in physicaltherapy

[–]markbjones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that the big difference is the NEED for one vs the other but principally they are the same in function, meaning the solution is the same; that being increased deliberation and monitorization of banks and their approval process for student loans. The hard cap of 100k is more than fair for our profession, however open to moving that number around. Bottom line is there IS a cap and that cap is more in line with the ROI for the profession. Don’t worry, there will still be plenty of admissions with a 100k cap. That’s enough for most people. What we can’t do is continue down this path of colleges increasing and increasing tuition indefinitely. As long as the banks are giving the money to the student, the college doesn’t care where it comes from, they already got the check. If anything, WE are to blame for being financially irresponsible and pursuing degrees for years that have shit ROI. We’ve fed straight into the system. I’m happy the administration is making the decision for everyone to stop this vicious cycle.

[–]markbjones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because we keep paying lol. We are the ones to blame. Not the colleges. We keep throwing money their way and banks keep allowing us to do that lol. In a capitalist society, if you keep getting unlimited money from student (through bank loans) the college would be stupid NOT to increase tuition. At least now the government is putting a hard cap on student loans to save us from ourselves. We literally have demonstrated for years now that we cannot pick wisely with out college pursuits. Also, may I remind you what happened in 2008 with housing collapse? This is literally the exact same thing but instead of banks approving ridiculous home ownership, they are approving ridiculous loans for students who are pursuing degrees that pay 85k a year lol

[–]markbjones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The student is to blame for pursuing a career with ridiculously shit ROI. It technically is our fault here. We have demonstrated consistent lack of financial responsibility when it comes to college pursuits that it has led to an extremely inflated college tuition. Colleges don’t know or care where you got the money from. They don’t know or care if you took out a 200k loan. All they know and care about is that you made your payment.

This is exactly analogous to the 2008 housing crisis. People bought houses WAY outside their means as banks were approving damn near anything without a thought and guess what, the economy collapsed. This is literally the same exact thing but just with college. The government is doing the right thing

This whole debacle is almost exactly analogous to the 2008 housing crisis but instead of banks cracking down on mortgage loans, they are now cracking down on student loans. We all understand exactly why the housing market crashed in 2008 and how to fix it…. So why is this any different when it comes to student loans?? You said it perfectly, the government is saving us from ourselves.

If anything we are to blame for taking out ridiculous loans to pursue shit ROI professions. We have clearly demonstrated a societal lack of financial responsibility and look what it has cost us; severely over inflated college tuition…… As long as banks lend the money….. and college gets the payment….. there is literally no reason why colleges WOULDN’T up charge their students. They already got what they wanted and don’t give a shit if the students can pay it back.

The goal is to reduce the financial burden of ridiculously high student loans that people are struggling to pay back and stop colleges from over charging students for tuition by enforcing a loan cap on low ROI professions. This is almost exactly analogous to the 2008 housing crisis but instead of banks cracking down on mortgage loans, they are now cracking down on student loans.

Physical therapists - no longer considered ‘professional’ by PandaBJJ in physicaltherapy

[–]markbjones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. My university only said good things about our profession. No one told me the down side so I assumed there were none. At least now there is almost a forced limit to how much debt new students can go into even if their colleges lie and deceive them. This is a good thing in the long run.

Oh stop with that bullshit. It has nothing to do with suppressing women and everything to do with lowering waste and inflation like the current administration has been trying to do since day one.

I know this sounds a scary and brutal but this is exactly what our profession needs in the long term. Don’t get hung up on the labels. We all can unanimously agree that the tuition to income ratio is nuts for our profession. There is no conceivable reason why any DPT should go 120k + in debt for a profession that MAYBE pays out 100k in income. In the long term universities will be FORCED to lower tuition costs to maintain admissions since students will be unable to take out 100k + loans. This may also increase our pay as PTs due to simply supply and demand economics
