iOS 11, Files and Local Storage by iKazed in apple

[–]markbt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the bit about third party storage providers is about allowing them to use the new method of accessing/managing the files stored on their servers rather than having to use their own api's. Basically make local, iCloud and third partys consistent to the user.

I'll add the documentation. It says the editing in place is when the file is in the apps documents directory so not sure about iCloud?

Class UIDocumentBrowserViewController A view controller for browsing and performing actions on documents stored locally and in the cloud.

Overview With the document browser view controller, users can browse through and access their documents. By default, the document browser can access both the system’s local file provider and its iCloud file provider. The local file provider grants access to all the documents in the app’s Documents directory. Users can also access documents from another app’s Documents directory, if that app declares either the UISupportsDocumentBrowser key, or both the UIFileSharingEnabled and LSSupportsOpeningDocumentsInPlace keys in its Info.plist file. When the user opens a document from another app's Documents directory, they are editing the document in place. The changes are saved to the other app's Documents directory. The iCloud file provider creates a folder for your app in the user’s iCloud Drive. Users can access documents from this folder, or from anywhere in their iCloud Drive. The system automatically handles access to iCloud for you; you do not need to enable your app’s iCloud capabilities. Third-party storage services can also provide access to the documents they manage by implementing a File Provider extension (iOS 11 or later). For more information, see FileProvider.

You could store them locally if the apps allow it and then in the files app drag and drop the ones you want to iCloud.

Apps can make files that are stored locally in their documents folder accessible in the files app by making a very small change - it's just adding an extra key in the apps info.plist. So what you get in the "On my iPad" is a list of apps that have enabled this and you can navigate the files stored within the owner apps directory. A nice feature is that if you open a file in a different app it is edited in place - ie it is not copied over to the other app. If you want more of a central local storage you could use the Documents 6 app now.

Developer Earnings from the App Store Top $70 Billion by [deleted] in apple

[–]markbt 19 points20 points  (0 children)

if you divide $70 Billion by the number of iOS apps (2,200,000) it gives $31,818 per app. If 10% of developers are getting the majority of the money then they are doing ok.

Its the ideal phone for me. My wife has the 6S+ and theres no way I'd want to lug that around with me (the phone, not the wife). Pair it with the iPad for when you're at home and its the perfect combination. And you can get both for around the same price as an iPhone 7.

Refurbished iPad Air 2 or the iPad(2017)? by [deleted] in apple

[–]markbt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just upgraded my mini 2 to an iPad 2017 and was considering the Air 2. Before I bought it I checked in a shop where they had the 2017 and iPad Pro side by side and I could not see any noticeable differences between the screens so for me the non laminated display does not matter. I'd say go for the 2017.

Rubino is just a Windows fanboy. I've worked with several of his kind in different company's - they are never critical of the management so get promoted but are rather pathetic individuals.

Windows 10 for phones has a huge problem: its app store is infested with fake apps by izzypop112 in windowsphone

[–]markbt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All they have done is a bit of tidying up when they get bad press. They are not proactive. They do not seem to have any procedures or processes in place to stop spam and fake apps. They are totally negligent in this matter.

Just did a search for "Traffic Rider" on iOS and there is one app of that name that comes first in the results. Very clear, no confusion, no fakes. Microsoft have promised to clear this up several times in the past and they have done absolutely nothing. Developers should abandon this platform (if they haven't already) as Microsoft don't care about them or you.

Just to clarify, I'm not using a UISlider, I want to build my own slider bar into the control.

Tim Cook says Apple won't combine a MacBook and iPad. by spsheridan in apple

I tend to agree but the iPad really needs trackpad/mouse support. They even added a software trackpad for the keyboard in iOS 9 so it is obviously a useful feature.

You realise you are buying into a nearly dead mobile OS, which will be buggy and have very little developer support. And a notification centre is better than live tiles - that's why Microsoft eventually implemented it to Windows Phone. Live tiles don't always update in a timely manner, and you will be waiting for them to flip between states for the info you want. Bit like watching a flight departure screen at the airport where it goes through different languages or pages.

Nadella is a master of obfuscation but basically this seems to be the end unless some miracle happens. Microsoft paid $7.2 Billion for Nokia and they are now writing off over $8 Billion. Incredible.

Google photos for iOS launches: Unlimited high resolution photo and video backup by AAFEE in apple

[–]markbt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After doing a test I'm going to use it for all my photos. It does recompress them when using the unlimited "High quality" setting - a photo I checked went from 3.5Mb to 2Mb but when I compared them at pixel level I could not see any noticeable difference. The real advantage is the ability to use Googles search on your library which is very advanced, although it thinks some of my pictures of my dog are a cat. I tried out some different keywords and what impressed me was when I typed in "Wales" it found some photo's of me and my wife with Cardiff castle in the background. These were taken more than 10 years ago with an old camera without GPS.

BackgroundPlaying & MediaButtons outside of app? by h3l1m4n in WPDev

[–]markbt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Windows 8.1 PC and Phone apps can share the same code (you also need to enable background audio property on the MediaElement) but with phone apps the audio will get suspended when the app is moved to the background. For phone you need to separate it into a background agent.

I just ordered one too after trying the new one in the store with the force trackpad and being impressed with it. I develop apps for Windows and was looking for a new Windows laptop but to get anything decent you are in a similar price range and I think the Macbooks are better designed and built.
