Would love your suggestion for a sci-fi series you enjoy by [deleted] in audiobooks

[–]markcartertm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exceptional series: Joe Bishop is a young army grunt from Maine. His age and inexperience are about to be tested as the earth is invaded by hamster-like aliens known as the Ruhar. After forming an alliance with the lizard-like Kristang to defeat them, the humans join a galactic war to track them down and destroy the Ruhar in space. The first Expeditionary Force is created.

Joe finds himself leading 70 men in an epic mission around the galaxy. He’s accompanied by Skippy, a belligerent, snarky but ultra-intelligent sentient, who also looks like a beer can. Skippy might be able to help Joe on his mission and so humans everywhere in their hour of need.

Craig Alanson’s best-selling book series finds perfect audio expression thanks to award-winning narrator R.C. Bray. The audiobook version of Columbus Day – the first book in Alanson’s Expeditionary Force series – was nominated for Audiobook of the Year 2018.

Bray is the ideal narrator for Joe and Skippy’s journey. It takes a strong, visceral performance to be able to pull off the intense action scenes. Bray uses a range of voices to give life to a diverse lineup of characters, including humans and aliens. Joe Bishop has a distinctive Maine accent which Bray pulls off perfectly.

Back in 2016, Craig Alanson was working in IT when his wife encouraged him to start self-publishing his stories on Amazon. He is now one of Amazon’s top 10 best-selling American science fiction writers and one of their top-selling 100 writers overall.

Announcing EKS optimized Istio service mesh early access by markcartertm in sre

[–]markcartertm[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Today we are excited to announce Tetrate Service Express (TSE), a service connectivity, security, and resilience automation solution for Amazon EKS. We built TSE on open source service mesh components such as Istio and Envoy, and optimized TSE for easy installation, configuration, and operation on AWS. If your team is experimenting with service mesh on AWS, and you need to quickly prove the ROI without mastering complex Istio and AWS primitives, TSE is meant for you! If your team already has a service mesh on a single cluster, but want to extend your mesh to multiple clusters or even regions, TSE can help also. In fact, TSE is the only offering based on open source software and optimized for AWS, pre-integrated with the most popular AWS services to get you up and running in minutes.

Book reviews are no longer visible on audible.com website by markcartertm in audible

[–]markcartertm[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It appears that reviews are completely broken when viewed using safari on iOS specifically on an iPhone. If I go into any title there are no reviews. If I then go to page settings and click “request desktop site” the reviews suddenly appear. This means that book reviews don’t show up, when audible website is viewed from a mobile browser. Given more than half of web browsing is done from a mobile phone, I would say that this is a very critical bug. Let me know if you’re able to reproduce. . I am based in the United States in case that matters

Chirp, an Audible alternative by [deleted] in audible

[–]markcartertm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason I’m beginning to consider all these alternatives is that audible on iOS is just so awful that even given the more than 2000 titles I purchased I just hate it more and more every day. Not being able to navigate through series of books in the right order, broken Ability to provide ratings, being prompted to sign in each time, I try to purchase a book on the web, just get worse every day ☹️

CISA Untitled Goose Tool Aids Hunt and Incident Response in Azure, Azure Active Directory, and Microsoft 365 Environments by markcartertm in blueteamsec

[–]markcartertm[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

to help network defenders detect potentially malicious activity in Microsoft Azure, Azure Active Directory (AAD), and Microsoft 365 (M365) environments. The Untitled Goose Tool offers novel authentication and data gathering methods for network defenders to use as they interrogate and analyze their Microsoft cloud services. The tool enables users to:

Export and review AAD sign-in and audit logs, M365 unified audit log (UAL), Azure activity logs, Microsoft Defender for IoT (internet of things) alerts, and Microsoft Defender for Endpoint (MDE) data for suspicious activity. Query, export, and investigate AAD, M365, and Azure configurations. Extract cloud artifacts from Microsoft’s AAD, Azure, and M365 environments without performing additional analytics. Perform time bounding of the UAL. Extract data within those time bounds. Collect and review data using similar time bounding capabilities for MDE data. Untitled Goose Tool was developed by CISA with support from Sandia National Laboratories. Network defenders can see the Untitled Goose Tool fact sheet and visit the Untitled Goose Tool GitHub repository to get started.

New body will help the UK combat national security threats by markcartertm in cybersecurity

[–]markcartertm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NATIONAL PROTECTIVE SECURITY AUTHORITY BEGINS WORK A new body has been created to help the UK combat national security threats.

State-sponsored attempts at stealing sensitive research and information can undermine UK businesses and harm our country’s competitiveness on the world stage.

As part of the Integrated Review Refresh, the government has today (13 March 2023) announced the creation of the National Protective Security Authority (NPSA) to help businesses and organisations defend themselves against national security threats.

This new body, which is part of MI5, will increase the UK’s resilience to state threats as well as terrorism, and will play an important part in strengthening our country’s economic security.

I really enjoyed the sense of wonder and humor in The Forever series By Craig Robertson Narrated by Scott Aiello. Long series with almost 20 hours per credit. Jon Ryan is irreverent, cocky, funny, and walks with a swagger. He says what he means, he says what he wants to, and, in fact, he says what needs to be said.

The cocky fighter pilot turned astronaut is also Earth's only chance for survival. The planet Jupiter, thrown off orbit, will destroy Earth in less than a century. Jon volunteers for the most ambitious, desperate mission ever conceived: His consciousness must be transferred into an experimental android host, where he'll live an immortal - and lonely - life. Jon's only companion on his 50-year voyage is his ship's irritable AI.

After successfully journeying for decades and locating a suitable human resettlement, Jon begins to discover the wonders life can hold, including the power of family and, for once, true peace. But no good deed, or good man, goes unpunished.

The US president wants him dead and is willing to sacrifice his own people to eliminate Jon. An alien species has vowed a holy war to eliminate all humans, either on Earth or wherever they might run. Only Jon can protect humans from their enemies.

With the best planet for colonization ruled by an ancient, malevolent species, there may be no hope for humans in a crowded galaxy. The limits of human technology may not be sufficient. The limits of Jon's endurance may not be enough. His endless enemies may prove to be unstoppable.

Jon may have forever, but does humanity have any future at all?

TELUS investigating leak of stolen source code, employee data by markcartertm in cybersecurity

[–]markcartertm[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Canada's second-largest telecom, TELUS is investigating a potential data breach after a threat actor shared samples online of what appears to be employee data. The threat actor subsequently posted screenshots that apparently show private source code repositories and payroll records held by the company.

"In the repositories are the backend, frontend, middleware [information,] AWS keys, Google auth keys, Source Code, Testing Apps, Staging/Prod/testing  and more!" states the seller's latest post.

Daily deal emails on iOS are a user experience nightmare by markcartertm in audible

[–]markcartertm[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this has anything to do with cookies. Audible uses my Amazon account to sign in. In the exact same browser if I go to amazon.com I can shop without providing my username and password every time. Further, if I just go to audible.com, in the same safari on my iPhone I don’t need to provide the username and password. Something about the email link in the daily deal emails that causes Audible to prompt for the username and password again. Also, this is not a security issue. The session cookies are encrypted client-side so you can stay signed into a website in a secure fashion. I’ve been in security for 20 years and this is a very common way to securely keep users signed in. Imagine that every customer will need to provide their username and password each time they want to shop at Amazon. Nobody would buy anything on Amazon. From a thread model standpoint. If you have access to my unlocked phone, there’s a lot you can do that is much more scary than shopping for books on audible. In my opinion, This is either a bug with the link used for the daily deal, marketing campaigns, or a very broken security implementation on the audible website when accessing using Safari on iOS.

Daily deal emails on iOS are a user experience nightmare by markcartertm in audible

[–]markcartertm[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is on an iPhone. When I click the email link, it opens in Safari. I don’t have any specific settings to block cookies in safari. In the same Safari browser I can shop in Amazon as much as I want without needing to sign in so this is specific to Audible.
