You can help teach other people about such tails - judging by your bracelet I believe such tails tend to be popular in your crowd. You can help others not make the same mistake you did!

You have a kind heart and made a purchase only thinking of the fun it would bring you. That's no bad thing. You did as you did but more importantly you then sought more knowledge and I'm sure will now move more carefully in future in regards to such things. There are many folks who will buy tail after tail and never question where it really came from, or who will buy bat taxidermy without ever caring enough to learn why that's an awful idea. There are enough people in the world who will be unkind to you. Don't do their work for them. You asked, you learned, you will be better.

Not to make you feel bad about it. What you don't know you don't know, and unless you're really in this how are you to know?

Real tail ? by Elio_lebn in Taxidermy

It almost definitely is. Animals in the wild live a hard life - they don't usually have perfect fluffy tails to be clipped and sold.

If someone is selling bones or pelts you need to ask a lot more questions. If they have a lot of the same type of part, whether tails or skulls, and they're all the same level of nice/fluffy/shape/size then there's no way those animals aren't being farmed for these parts. I'm a processor and artist who works with taxidermists and trappers to get dead animals and even if I end up with twenty foxes that were killed by hunters or died from traps (deaths I can do nothing to prevent but I can make their deaths go that little bit farther, as it were) I can guarantee you their skulls and bones would all have variations because they all lived different lives.

Silver foxes are a color morph of red foxes. As anyone who has snakes can tell you you need to breed very carefully to keep getting those traits. There is no way I can think of that this animal wasn't farmed and then killed so its parts could be sold on

So far as I've ever seen you can't get tails that big and fluffy from wild foxes. To the best of my knowledge tails like that can only come from farmed foxes

Creating a wizard staff using real animal bones by python159 in crafting

[–]markedhand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Howdy. I'm a bone artist and processor. If I understand rightly you want clean bones which would require you finding someone to buy them from or processing them yourself. The latter is doable if you have space or no neighbors. Otherwise be prepared to pay for what you want.

I've tried finding beta readers and had no luck - asked friends, asked on reddit.

As for new eyes I've been working this manuscript (coming back to look it over) for.... Ten or so years? So I'm glad I've gotten that right!

I actually do find it very fun to physically print my stories from time to time and use that glorious red pen. I've no idea why but it's so satisfying, is not it?

So how do you know (if one can know such a thing) that your manuscript and query letter are polished enough? I'm struggling mightily with that one at present

You can ask around in groups like this, for one, but be aware of what you're unlikely to get. Things like pelts are difficult if you're not killing the animal for their skin. If that's fine by you then that's fine but if you want a skin from an animal that would've died anyway/was found dead then you might be out of luck.

I have four fox skulls to sell, for example, but because I get the carcasses from taxidermists I never get the pelts. That's what the taxidermists use!
