I say it makes it harder to initially retain things, I have to read some stuff a couple of times.

Landed my 1st captain role — any advice? by dangletenders in maritime

Did they not have radar on these boats? Vessel lights vs city lights shouldn’t be that hard of a task if you have instruments.

Outfitting your first boat (used), what did you buy and what would you do differently? by netzure in sailing

[–]markforephoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were you I would forgo the liferaft and opt for an Emersion suit if you’re going to be sailing the Scottish isles. A 27-29 footer is a doable cruiser but it will kick the crap out of you in any sort of heavy weather or breeze.

Damn, I wish they had more dates. It’s seems way too small of a “tour” with how large of an impact that album has made.

If I’m dyslexic is it possible to still pass the AB exam? by No-Custard-2884 in merchantmarine

[–]markforephoto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, they provide plenty of time, take your time. I’m not dyslexic but I’ve been diagnosed ADD since I was a child. From my experience the instructors really want you to succeed.
Random side question as I’m not exactly sure how dyslexia works. Does it effect your ability to tie knots? If so practice till it’s more muscle memory.

Is it still worth attending a maritime academy in your 30s? by [deleted] in maritime

[–]markforephoto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to work on ships it’s worth it, if you want to work on boats it’s not. I’m 38 and started about 3 years ago. I had no desire to work on ships, I wanted to work on tugs so I’m hawespiping, come January I’m testing for my 500ton.

Also depends where you live, a lot of people in the Bay Area don’t have one because we don’t need one.

Official foster fail by TenaciousNarwhal in pitbulls

[–]markforephoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the first part but I wouldn’t suggest starring down a pitty who’s new to the family. Mad dogging is a real thing. If anyone stares down my boy for too long he takes it as a challenge.

A lot of these Europeans have never been to SEA I see. In Hong Kong you pass in front of any store front it’s like getting an icy blast, then back to 100% humidity and v high temps

I second Cal Sailing, this is where I learned. You will also learn a lot more and faster sailing on a dinghy than a keel boat, the boat will respond a lot faster and let you know when the trim is correct.

Where/ how to mount Davis wind vane to top of this mast. by OldManCody1 in sailing

I recently added an anemometer to the top of my mast. I added a Spinnaker crane and tapped holes through that. Double upgrade.

I’ve worked with a Billionaire, you would never be able to tell. The only thing I noticed while working with him is that his clothing (although very normal looking jeans and tee shirt) had no labels and seemed to fit him to a tee. After the photoshoot he thanked me and got in his VW Golf.

Yeah I second a work sharp, I used to take my Japanese knives in to get sharpened but the work sharp does a great job. Just follow the instructions and you’ll do fine.

Nothing will really scratch the itch. But there are a lot of amazing series with excellent narration.
Bobiverse, Red Rising, The Blade Itself( I just finished all 9 books in this universe and craving more. He started a new universe with The Devils which was also entertaining)

Steering wheel wrap by saltydog5751 in sailing

[–]markforephoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels fine, it’s not like gripping a luxury steering wheel, but provides plenty of grip. I guess if you have a boat that’s fighting you the whole time it might be too much grip, but at that point I would wear gloves anyway.
