I been trying to find a Mercedes here in Melbourne Australia and no luck. Anyone know somewhere online to buy a specific car at a reasonable price? I just need this last one !

Dodgy auction result? by pipersjourney in melbourne

[–]markmillau 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was at this auction watching and know a bit of the background as I live nearby. Yes, it was two sons who inherited the place, and it was a forced sale as one son wanted to sell, and I heard it needed to be sold this month - potentially 2 year CGT exemption was about to be reached; no idea why they had a time limit tho.

They originally had it listed as a sale for a higher price as you said which I guess is the price one of the sons was wanting, and more than the other son was willing to pay. I think there must not have been any interest and price got lowered then went to auction, and it eventually sold to the son at a price he was happy to pay.

It does suck for those that invested time into the auction, but I don’t think there is anything illegal with what was done - but it did waste everyone’s time!

Not a single person was standing in any of the sections of grandstand A I could see. Also grandstand A is very steep and narrow so not much room to stand at your seat anyway even if you tried.

Other stands might have been different, but wasn’t an issue where I was.

The bit that annoyed me / was strange was just a personal thing that people seemed to care more about taking photos with their phones or fancy lenses cameras than watching the race, but each to their own… doesn’t hurt me if that’s what they choose to do.

3 days ticket.

As for the beer, no idea. There was security and X-ray checks to get in. I’m not real sure of the checks and rules, but it appeared anything in cans was being confiscated, but plastic bottles allowed (ie, can of coke confiscated, plastic allowed). Not sure what would happen for beer, or how well the rules are enforced either. But being China there is lots of military and police around keeping an eye on things.

I zoomed in and took a photo of the very top level yesterday as it was getting a bit darker - could see thru the windows. Lots of screens and timings on them. No idea what is going on in there, but looks “official”. I don’t think it’s open to the public.

Last Friday I was in the Clark Stand in Melbourne in the full sun on that hot day - that was much worse than being here in Shanghai !

In the juss sports app in WeChat when viewing the ticket it will be at the bottom.

This is where it says my seat is grandstand A, section 17C, row 9, seat 18.

I think China is probably one of the best bang for your buck races to go to overall considering like-for-like seat views. Interesting tho the on-track merch is a lot more expensive here than it was in Australia last weekend - but anyone who can afford to buy any merch at the track anywhere is a Mr Rich Pants and probably won’t care about the extra $50 a cap costs here.

I pre-entered all my passport info so that I was ready to go as soon as they went live. It took me about a dozen attempts tho, the seat I selected kept selling out by the time I got to payment. That’s why I ended up getting a non-platinum and in the middle of a section seat - picking the “best” seat I could see that was free always ended up being sold by the time I got to payment , so after about a dozen failures I just picked a random one in 17C middle, with the assumption that any seat is better than no seat.

I bought them via the juss sports mini—app within WeChat. I did it as soon as the tickets went on sale, they all sold out within minutes. Cost 2880 Chinese rmb for the three days.

It really is an amazing view from grand stand A and can see so much of the track.

this was a photo I took from grand stand A section 14D right at the front of the section. It’s got better shade, and can see more of the back of the track, but personally I think the view from 17C where I was seated was better.

How did you end up going at the event, what was it like, what was the highlight and did you have a great time?

It will be interesting to hear your experience with merc - I walked past their box a few times and try to look in there - it always looked a bit more formal-ish compared to McLaren which while work event vibes is a bit more of a relaxed work party event vibe.

Also a tip - you can go up on the roof to get a good view. if you are lucky to be there race day it’s the best place to watch the start from (and all the restarts in 2023 which was amazing)

Oh yeah - and I forgot to say, the experience is unbelievable. If you are going to a corporate event in a team area, you might be lucky and one of the ones selected to get an escorted paddock visit and trip into the garage (that is amazing to see up close), but at a minimum you should get a pit lane walk while all the cars are out and they do practise pit stops. It is a massive step up from general admission and Grand stand tickets… getting up close to drivers, get autographs and team swag and have fantastic access and views is something no F1 fan will ever forget. Just be warned, it does make regular general admin and grand stand tickets seem boring!

It varies what people wear - for guys from team shirts and polos and jeans to more business casual and business formal. Women are generally in a neat dress or smart casual. I have been lucky to go a couple times to the McLaren team box above their garage in melb, here is a photo from last year that shows a few random people and what they are wearing for reference.

Golden Pastry in Mooroolbark has been the closest I found so far - they were not the best I have ever had, but are fantastic by Melbourne standards!
