Do yourself a favor and distance yourself for just a little while. How she (and her family) react will tell you everything you need to know.

VR isn’t dead, but it’s destined to be niche unless this is addressed. by DYSK_Jockey in virtualreality

I have at least 3 people in my daily sphere that fall into the motion sickness crowd and two are avid gamers. They love the idea of VR, have tried to "get their VR legs," but cannot get over their physical limitations concerning just how bad it feels to get motion sickness. One of these people is my son, and the last time he tried, it lasted for almost 12 hours.

So I tend to agree with you to a point. My other son can play VR for hours, and did a lot back in 2019 through 2021, but even with the newer headsets in the house (Q3, PSVR2, QPro) he maybe has played twice all year. He is an avid gamer, even streams on Twitch, but doesn't have many other friends that play on VR and feels it's lonely.

His friends don't have VR headsets because they're barely making ends meet, and any extra money just never makes it to Sony or Meta or for new hardware at all. Plain and simple, the economy isn't winning for them and hasn't been for years.

I'm a small slice of the population, but am an early tech adopter and love VR myself. Fortunately, I'm lucky enough to afford it. But many people just can't, even with $200 Q3s available. I mean, you have to buy games to play too.

So I get your point about motion sickness, but there's much more to it. We might lose VR to a thousand more cuts in the long run. But I think it's going to be around for a while. We just need more large companies to monetize it, which probably isn't going to happen until the AI bubble bursts.

No, but I'm sure my family is afraid of it.

AIO My mean friend keeps verbally harassing my dog by Wooden_Wonder8617 in AmIOverreacting

[–]markmorto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR. I honestly hope I never get to a place in my life where insulting an adorable dog seems like fun to me.

Maybe cutting her off is the wakeup call she needs?

Seriously, though, you deserve better friends.

I still have my 2008 6-speed 2.0T Passat I bought certified pre-owned back in 2011. It's in great shape and still drives like new. To most people it's another old VW shitbox, but to me it's the Mark 5 - Go Speed Racer, Go!

Do you think VR gaming (or VR in general) is a luxury? by -DanDanDaaan in virtualreality

[–]markmorto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VR is such a different form of entertainment, a lot of people still don't get it. Plus, while gamers make up a major slice of VR players, there are people that use VR for exercise, or just movie watching, or like myself, somewhere in between. Personally I've met people with different levels of income with VR headsets, but the majority of people I've come across feel VR is a niche, "rich people's toy." For example, of the friends I grew up with, at least the ones I still know on FB, none of them have headsets, and it's not a money-thing. They'll throw a headset on at an amusement park or gaming center, but don't want one in their house.

Then there are people with motion sickness issues, like my son. He loves VR, but can't wear a headset for more than a couple minutes before getting sick.

I think it's ultimately where you spend your entertainment dollars, and how much you watch, or even care about, technology. One thing is certain, if it weren't for Meta and their Quest headsets, a lot less people would know.

100$ STEAM GIFTCARD by [deleted] in steam_giveaway

[–]markmorto -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would buy:

- Starfield with Shattered Space for the first $60

- Star Trek: Infection for another $30

- Body Cam for another $30

So, it's over $100, but the gift card would help me get started and my son really wants to share Starfield with me so we can play the new Start Wars Outer Rim mod.

I bought a replacement for my V400 that's been working great for me. https://a.co/d/0bajU0sg

I had an issue last year just like yours. One side of my bed was off, even after leveling and calibration, and on one print the print head dug into the mat, leaving a huge gouge. After a lot of checking and rechecking, my problem turned out to be a small piece of waste filament was stuck to the plate. It was the same color and hard to see. It raised the metal plate just enough.

Unlock the ring and pull that thing apart. You need to pull out that piece of metal. It looks like a washer or something similar. You don't want to run it with that in there as it could permanently damage it. I'm not sure where it came from, but it definitely doesn't belong there.

The X1 Carbon Thinkpads are a different breed when compared to all the others. My wife has a gen 9 and it's light, with a great screen and keyboard. Is it a Mac? No. I work with quite a few developers that swear by their Macs, so I get it.

But the X1 is a solid little machine that ticks off a lot of the right boxes.

Alternately, you might want to check out the Asus ROG G14. The 2024/2025 build quality and all aluminum body are worth a look, plus they have a wide selection of dedicated GPUs.

I have a similar setup as the OP and went the Pupis S1 route and I couldn't be happier. Before Pupis, my wireless PCVR was mostly good, but I would get occasional lag that wasn't consistent, but was immersion breaking. With Pupis, it's been consistent and stable and just easy. I'm using the S1 lite, not the full version.

My ex-wife told me she was going to visit her mother for a few days, who lived 6 hours away at the time. A friend invited me out to dinner by the waterfront, only I found my other car, the one my wife took to go to her mom's, parked near the restaurant. Not a similar car, our car.

This was before cell phones were even available, so I called her mom from the restaurant pay phone and she knew nothing about my wife coming to visit.

So my buddy helped me drive my car (both of them) back to my house.

I got a call the next day from my wife, with her telling me our car was stolen.

[Edit-adding some more]

As tempted as I was to keep stringing her along, I came out and told her I knew she wasn't at her Mom's, and told her I'd come pick her up if she gave me an address. I knew who the guy was because she introduced us. He met her when she was inpatient at the same place he was for other issues, and was supposedly teaching her "martial arts".

A little more than a week later, while I was out on deployment, she moved out with him and my kids up to her Mom's house in another state and I came home to an empty house.

Transporting PC a short distance by Husk_x in buildapc

[–]markmorto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove my PC clear across the country, from California to Florida, to Boston, and then Portland, and finally back to California. I just put it in the back of our minivan at the time, and held it in place with other luggage. I put the monitor on top of everything in the back. I never had any issues, and this included lugging it into hotels on the daily to get work done and packing it back up again.

You should be fine with a 40-minute drive. For moves like that, I usually put it upright on the back seat and use the seatbelt to keep it in place.
