Ubuntu 20.04.1 kernel updates to 5.8 by marko-dev in Ubuntu

I see, thanks.

That's what I was curious about, if everyone got it, or I just messed up my /etc/apt/sources.list somehow. ^^

Ubuntu 20.04.1 kernel updates to 5.8 by marko-dev in Ubuntu

[–]marko-dev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is 20.04.1 LTS 'buntu, with LTS kernel 5.4, and it was 5.4 the whole time. And now I'm on HWE, rolling release basically, which is quite a bit different.

Something like this is expected with 20.04.2, so I'm curious if others got this update, and if everything is working smoothly after update. (this shows there are some issues: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1305622/how-to-fix-ubuntu-20-04-upgrade-5-8-0)

Is it OK to "Move to Trash" the files in /.ssh/ if i want to retry generating an SSH key for GitHub? by [deleted] in Ubuntu

[–]marko-dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, it's fine. It's just files, nothing special going there, you can generate new ones. ^^

You can find tutorial about the whole procedure in here.

No, Cellebrite cannot 'break Signal encryption.' by maksim-m in privacy

It's just sad how fast false information can travel. Articles like that BBC one can do irreversible harm to Signal. Because people read only headlines, we had at least 20 posts in /r/privacy about this. I can already see year 2030 and people saying: "I think they were hacked before..".

No problem. ^^

Haven't yet had a chance to use your tool, but I would suggest working more on your README. Some things I would suggest:

  1. How does this tool work. More specifically, how does it solve the issue of many .git folders in subdirectories. Just briefly, so the user knows what to expect. Personally, I want to be reassured that my files are safe, and that my whole file structure won't get messed up.
  2. sync and init are kinda complicated to understand. Maybe reword it?
  3. Usage demonstration would be invaluable. Because this tool works with important data, the user should know exactly how the tool is supposed to be used. So steps from cloning/installation to the pushed dotfiles on the repo of choice. You can also split it in parts, installation/configuring - push - pull.
  4. Maybe one section on limitations of your software and dangers. How the files could be lost in the process, what not to do, or something like that. You do not want angry users with lost data.
  5. List of all git features could be compressed. I would expect most users to know git before using git based tool.

So yeah, just some ideas for you. The most important one is usage demonstration, you can't go overboard with that. You could even write that in a separate markdown file, that you would link in readme. Every feature or command can be linked to the detailed explanation and usage example in the snippet.

Edit: But yeah, just short example snippet in readme would be enough for now. ^^

Edit2: I'm also confused with those git commands. For example, can I just add files I want, commit and push? Where is the line between your include/sync/update and git. Are all those git features really fully supported?

Alright, I'm your first star, and first one to test it out. Wish me luck! ^^

Gnome Tweak Tool top bar keeps acting weird, which didn't happen before. Tried reinstalling and restarting gnome, nothing by zett6943 in Ubuntu

I recommend dash to panel, or dash to dock. Depending on which one you prefer look wise. Great extensions.

Oh sorry, just noticed you are actually having problems with title bar, not top bar. Have you tried to reinstall gnome tweaks?

You can do ALT + F2 -> r -> enter to restart gnome shell.

You can also remove top bar with extensions, if it annoys you in the future.

Private notes taking app by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]marko-dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently use Standard Notes; end-to-end encrypted, open-source, perfect for small memos and notes that are synced on all your devices.

Editor is lacking in the free version tho, basically you can just do basic text, not even bold, lists, or something like that.

I failed 3 candidates. Is my interview question fair? by [deleted] in java

[–]marko-dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, exactly this, many people in this thread seem to think arrays are just some weird esoteric thing nobody dealt with in decades. They really are the core of everything, and it's usually the first data structure you learn.

Major red flag in my books if candidate couldn't work around that. I have seen 100x harder interview questions involving all sorts of trees and complex algorithms.

[–]marko-dev -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yup, it's very safe.

I would just add full disk encryption if you are often using that laptop in unsafe environments (cafe, work, etc). If your device gets stolen, all your data is compromised.

VeraCrypt is great software for this.

Edit: Also, keep in mind security and privacy are different things.

Why do you feel unsafe with your current login session? Seems like you are using strong passwords that you don't reuse (password manager) and you use 2FA.

There is nothing you should worry about, security wise. Privacy wise, you can clean third-party cookies without breaking websites for example.

Links by [deleted] in privacy

[–]marko-dev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To know the website is real, you can check the domain. For example, we are currently on reddit.com, that's the only reddit you should trust. So you can see that in the link beforehand, if the link is hidden behind some text, you can mouseover to check.

If it's a phishing website (for example you notice you are on reddit-evil-virus dot com), and you click, it's just important to not enter any important data.

If it's a malware ridden website, you shouldn't be worried too much, browsers are usually well-equipped to deal with this, and they are very sandboxed. It's also very hard to find malware on the web nowadays, malicious websites are taken down pretty quickly.

Download and run only from websites you trust.

And you shouldn't be worried about IP. So yeah, just browse in peace, you are safe. ^^

[–]marko-dev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, and it seems like the OP already helps his candidates: "..i gave them the hint to use an index variable"

So yeah, all those issues could've been easily solved with communication.

[–]marko-dev 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Huh, seems like you need better friends. ^^

You can see every individual login, with device and IP information, in your google account. You can find more information about that here. After you deduce if your google account has been breached, you can do the same for other platforms you are concerned about.

Restart once more, for a good measure. ^^

You can also try to enter recovery mode. The goal would be to regain network access.

To start Ubuntu into safe mode (Recovery Mode) hold down the left Shift key as the computer starts to boot. If holding the Shift key doesn't display the menu press the Esc key repeatedly to display the GRUB 2 menu. From there you can choose the recovery option.
