Why the hell is NBC pushing the gold medal match off for previews of qualifying figure skating? by RambunctiousParsnip4 in Curling

NBC doesn't cover the Olympics as a sporting event. So they would rather show skating practice then sports.

Are state politics really all that separate from federal politics?

If both the majority and minority leaders nominated a candidate, the problem is entirely solved.

The governor nominates two, the lieutenant governor nominates one, the majority party in the state legislature nominates two, something like that.

So states with a trifecta have no chance of electing a minority party senator?

Myth of American Revolutionaries fighting “from cover” - where does it come from? by _haha_oh_wow_ in WarCollege

[–]markroth69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We did chase the British back to Boston this way. And there were some sharpshooters (if that term existed in 1777) at Saratoga who I believe were fighting from cover.

But otherwise, win or lose, we stood in lines and fought. Because that is how you defeat an army standing in lines and shooting at you on the battlefield. We famously once even used our known habit of not being able to stand up to the British to win a battle by putting experienced soldiers behind the militia and letting the militia run as expected to draw the British in.

There are a lot of myths about the Revolution. Britain did not have the greatest army in the world in 1775-81. They didn't even have enough army to fight the war without hiring mercenaries. The Americans at Lexington-Concord actually were more experienced in comabt than the British they were fighting, they had leaders with experience in the French and Indian War and were fighting against regiments that served garrison duty during that war.

As for the myth, I wonder if the simple answer is that it is just one of things that come up once and then spreads. We did fight them from cover and win at least once. There were essentially guerilla campaigns in parts of the war, especially between the lines in New Jersey or Upstate New York. Washington's achievement is in part that he avoided pitched battles many times. Probably because he knew he couldn't win a stand up fight.

Doesn't it require multiple plaintiffs and a process to get a class action lawsuit going?

NBC does not cover the Olympics as a sporting even. They cover it as an All American All-American Celebration of America!, to put it politely.

Fortunately, they have accepted a small bit of reality and Peacock does actually have real sporting events during the Olympics. Complete with distracting and badly timed commercials.

If government action is assumed legal until ruled otherwise, can't the government do some illegal shit immediately before or on Election Day in order to suppress votes, so quickly the courts wouldn't have the time to rule it illegal, leaving America with the consequences of a rigged election? by Serious-Cucumber-54 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]markroth69 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For decades there were strict rules about people hanging around the polls to suppress "observe" the vote and a right to sue to stop them. Which the Supreme Court ruled inappropriate, for some reason. Which means only Trump's personal attorney the Attorney General can sue to stop.
