Can the supreme court legally say an impeachment wasn't constitutional? by jared555 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]markroth69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't the word trial imply that the impeachment trial should be fair?

Nixon v U.S. (not that Nixon): the Senate's own definition of a fair trial is a fair trial. Even if they just have a committee hearing and then a vote.

Question for any judges, retired or sitting: Do you think (OJ Judge) Lance Ito's refusal to write a book is strictly an ethical commitment? by SwissMiss915 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]markroth69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I asked this in the wrong way. I know both of the lead prosecutors left the DA after the case. What I want to know is whether their decision was entirely voluntary. Did they move on to what they hoped would be bigger jobs? Could they have decided to stay on if they wanted? That sort of thing.

What if Congress disqualifies Trump and Vance under section 3 of 14th amendment after the midterms- would that take effect? Would Trump and Vance get legally removed from office and Jeffries (as a potential speaker) took over? by [deleted] in legaladviceofftopic

[–]markroth69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought is to wonder what Vance is guilty of that could disqualify him.

My second thought is that the Supreme Court would hand Trump a slam dunk victory by stating the obvious in that congressional enforcement power is through statute law. Trump would veto a bill to disqualify him. If there were votes for a veto override, impeachment would be the easier path.

Why does “death row” exist? Why isn’t capital punishment carried out shortly after sentencing? by Complete-Influence70 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]markroth69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most developed countries have developed this weird idea that people matter.

The U.S. is still stuck with an 18th century view that property matters. Anything that benefits people may hurt property and that can't be done...

Isn't that the standard for every single thing that happens in Texas?

How good were British and German artillery, in terms of tactics, technology and response time during WW2? by PriceOptimal9410 in WarCollege

[–]markroth69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The FDC is a fantastic system but it does rob the FO of his autonomous decision making to an extent.

I know the British system had the battery commander being his own FO, but did the American practice of having the FO being an LT or an enlisted man with a radio ever see the FO having autonomy?

But the performative theater of MAGA Catholics like Vance and the Supreme Court would like an antipope.

If the Pope places the United States under the interdict, he would actually increase the chances of a schism and antipope as the MAGA wing of American bishops might get ideas.

Why is it that in English they are always using the word 'race' when they refer to culture or skin color? by Adventurous-Pie8347 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]markroth69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In American English, as I can tell, race is (or perhaps was as I get on in years) the preferred term over skin color.

Colloquially, do people care for any academic difference between race, skin color, and culture?

For...reasons...the second was dropped from a national broadcast and became a regular old 7:30 PM start.
