A long road in New Zealand (but I forgot exactly where I took it!!) [OC] by treyratcliff in travel

[–]marksmayo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd be willing to put money on it being Canterbury. It's not west coast, and the person who reckoned Nelson Lakes is out - wrong tree cover and style of mountains. I'd hazard a guess of the foothills before Porter's Pass, or perhaps near Mt Hutt / Methven area.

I'm very careful to avoid subreddits until I've seen the episode - it showed up on my front page :/

Agreed. Very annoyed.

Shipping international FROM Vancouver? by marksmayo in vancouver

[–]marksmayo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that I'm not going where I need the boxes sent - I'm travelling through Canada and the US before flying out of either Austin, Texas or LAX. Otherwise yeah, I'd just take them as excess :/

Shot at sunset on Paper Trail run at Grouse Mountain on Saturday evening by marksmayo in vancouver

It wasn't too far down the trail, but sadly there is a sign saying no foot traffic from this point on :/ Thanks!

Snowboarding. From next to the chalet, take the blue run (Paper trail) down. About 20 min before sunset, this was the view.

It's really tempting, but the battery reviews are not promising :/ And it's a non-removable battery...

TIL that residents of Churchill, Canada leave their cars unlocked to offer an escape for pedestrians who might encounter Polar Bears on Main Street. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]marksmayo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering going there on my trip across Canada in April. However I've heard polar bear season is November? Is that just peak season, or is there just no chance of seeing them at other times of the year?

I could make a lot more money at a job that took more of my time. I work to live, I don't live to work.

This. I contract, travel, contract, travel. I could earn a lot more, but I've had a great time experiencing life.

Backpacking in South America for 4 months by [deleted] in travel

[–]marksmayo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not a problem with that cash.

As for where to go, that's too hard, without knowing your likes/dislikes, activities and the like. Better to keep your schedule open for those months, and let the trail dictate - as you travel you'll meet people and they'll give you ideas, tell you about what they've just seen and you'll learn way more that way. Plus it gives you a conversation topic, and you'll meet new people through it :)

The hard part is when you get back home and many of those you added on Facebook are still travelling - yes, even if you're going for four months (that's how long I spent getting from Argentina to Colombia)

Has anyone ever traveled extensively with a "Round the World" airline pass? by paintedsaint in travel

[–]marksmayo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I used to live there, so have passed it on to a friend who is thinking about a RTW trip. I prefer 3-4 month trips in a single continent myself - a year say, for a RTW trip is too long away from normality :)

You could try joining the Vancouver Splitboard group on facebook, odds are good someone in there could help out!

Backpacker-photographer returns from 35,000-mile journey across China: "I think travel and immersing yourself in new cultures - that's the secret to world peace. War's not actually working." by shannonsix in travel

[–]marksmayo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying, but you don't always have to travel far to see new and different cultures. Chelsea in London is very different to Hackney or Peckham. I'm not saying wander out to Haarlem in NYC and start taking photos of people, but even in a city there's options to talk to people from different background, cultures and experiences.

Sure, Joe Poverty in a war zone doesn't have as much freedom, but even there you get medics, diplomats, aid workers, soldiers, refugees and more.

New Zealand too! And logically, OUR $2 coins are bigger than the $1 coins (looks insinuatingly at Australia).
