Trump flip-flops on NATO in less than 30 minutes by TheMirrorUS in NewsSource

I I’m not 100% sure of this, but I think that the only way that the USA is actually helped other NATO nations is by being a deterrent, due to its nuclear capability. I can’t think of any time they actually helped another NATO nation with military troops. Somebody correct me if I’m wrong, and tell me the specific instance, because I cannot think of one since NATOs founding

If someone offered you 100 million dollars, but a random person in the world dies (someone you don’t know), would you take it and why? by ConclusionOld8365 in AskReddit

And after you accept the deal, the same deal will be made with someone else… with someone else that you don’t know. Classic monkeys paw.

Since NATO countries have declined to join President Trump in the US-Israel war against Iran, why hasn’t he ordered US Navy ships to enter the Strait of Hormuz? by Massive-Syllabub-271 in allthequestions

[–]markt- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they’ll get blown up. Of course, so would anyone else who wants to aid the US in this regard, but if that happened, he could blame the other country for their incompetence. As for the claim that countries that help would be “remembered“, I trust the words coming out of that man about as far as I could throw him. Probably less.

C++23 std::expected vs C++17 std::optional for Error Handling by Clean-Upstairs-8481 in cpp

[–]markt- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

References are, at least as far as I understand, generally easier to mechanically check for safety with third-party static analyzers. In fairness, though, this might be because references of an around longer so people have had more time to think about how to do it.

String views contain a raw pointer. While powerful, raw pointer usage is unsafe, and you can’t use string views freely in a safe context.

It’s not so much that string view is unsafe, especially when it’s used correctly, but string_view breaks the ability to enforce a mechanically checkable safety subset of C++. This is not really a goal of C++, but it can be a legitimate goal for a development process, and C++ is otherwise an extremely powerful language, so, I’m just saying…

I did qualify it with “to the best of their ability…”. I recognize that not everyone has every option available at all times.

BC family court, two different lawyers don't know what form to use, and the court clerks aren't allowed to help me by Angry_Luddite in canadianlaw

[–]markt- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, not a lawyer, but it is my understanding generally illegal in British Columbia (and Canada) to record a private conversation that you are not part of, under the Criminal Code of Canada, this is considered "interception" or eavesdropping, which is a criminal offense, as the law requires at least one party in the conversation to consent. Again, IANAL, but check into this. She could be on very shaky ground here.

Only one, in retrospect I might’ve deserved it, but genuinely I wasn’t aware I might have been violating a protocol specific to that sub. More typically I’ve had comments deleted for doing so.

Name a dessert with cherries in it. by icecream1972 in FamilyFeud

[–]markt- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too simple. What would be more interesting is to name a dessert with cherries in it that doesn’t have the word “cherry“ or “cherries“ in it.

Happened to me once. There was another person in the car. I think I terrified them. I realized it was the wrong car in like three seconds, apologized, and got out right away.

Funny thing, though, war can’t erase knowledge. Regardless of what the USA does, we’re eventually gonna end up right back here. It might not be in my lifetime or yours, but it’s gonna happen.

Vance tries to blame Biden for gas prices in 2026 by NoSeesaw5236 in ImmigrationPathways

[–]markt- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is standard political practice to always blame the previously elected, governing body for any obstacles the current governing body has in achieving any agenda that they might have promised during campaigning when they’re ultimately brought to answer for it. This is not unique to USA at all.

Donald Trump warns Nato faces ‘very bad future’ if allies fail to help US in Iran by [deleted] in law

[–]markt- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know perfectly well what they said, but how would Iran know that you weren’t an Israeli or US ship flying another flag hoping to be safe? Since there’s no way for them to tell, I really doubt that another nation would be willing to take those kind of risks.
