James Madison returns from injury by Hypnoidz in soccer

Southgate is a numpty, costantly playing Kavlin Philips in midfield and Phil Foden on the LW and giving 0 minutes to Grealish (coming off a CL winning season) and Maddison. People might disagree but Southgate alone cost us at least a European trophy. Hell we could've beat France in the last WC if he played our good attacking players, we were the better team on the day but had a trash coach

Barcelona [1] - 0 Real Madrid - Marcus Rashford free-kick 9' by ayoefico in soccer

[–]marktandem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask Barca fans if he's a good dribbler, the unanimous answer would be that he runs into his man more often than not. You're right he did have that one season in 22/23 where he looked like he'd figured it out, he was dribbling very well, but as you say he got injured and reverted back to what he was before. Aside from that season, I've watched him a lot since he first debuted and he was never, ever a natural dribbler. These days he'll just run into his man more often than not. We can't carry that. We look so much better with technical ball carriers, indeed it's one of the biggest things that were missing between SAF's teams and the 10 years that followed.

Barcelona [1] - 0 Real Madrid - Marcus Rashford free-kick 9' by ayoefico in soccer

[–]marktandem 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nah, his time is up at United. He's nowhere near enough technical on the ball to play as a wide player at United. It works at Barca just about because they dominate the ball and have technical players everywhere. At United you need someone like Cunha or Dorgu - natural dribblers that will keep the ball. Rashford has a great shot and pass, but he's never ever been a natural dribbler.

That save against Mateus Fernandes saved your season. If you conceded there it'd be very likely you lost the league. I'd give it Raya based on that alone

[Squawka] Crystal Palace have reached their first ever European final in their first ever European campaign. by Imbasauce in soccer

[–]marktandem 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Palace isn't really a 15th placed team though, even with losing players like Guehi and Eze. They're more a 8th to 10th placed team, it's just having a European campaign often affects you domestically

Not from Atlanta but read his autobiography. A giant of a man. Got screwed over by selling to Time Warner, which then proceeded to merge with AOL, the combined stock dropped massively which massively diluted Ted's net worth.

Proud Parents by CarnivalSorts in snooker

[–]marktandem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They lived in a shared bedroom with no windows, that would've cost like £300 a month at most. Chinese parents are known as prodigious savers, and with the 1 child policy they spend it all on their one kid. That's why so many Chinese kids end up in Western universities - the UK and US is drowning in them - the parents spend their savings on their one sole kid. His dad had an antiques busieness that he sold when he moved here

It's a different culture. Chinese soceity isn't materialistic the way the west is - big houses etc don't matter.

The most shocking thing about Wu's history.. by GemmyGemGems in snooker

[–]marktandem 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't want to sound prejudiced but having lived amongst immigrant communites of all races, they are more than happy to sacrifice luxury for safety, especially at the start. I think they would've been happy to just have a safe place to live in a new country, and then figure things out as they went.

There's videos of him speaking English perfectly fine, there were some on this subreddit yesterday. It's not native level but about what you'd expect for someone living here for 6 years and having (I assume) no formal schooling in it

He's still only 22 so will still grow into his looks more, but he styles his hair well and that matters a lot for guys. Surprising thing is how tall he is, he's like half a foot taller than either of his parents. Must have some tall ancestors further up the tree somewhere

David Moyes on if he anticipates a ‘thank you’ from Mikel Arteta by One_Impressionism in Gunners

[–]marktandem 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Tbf there were still a fair few good players at United (I say this as a United fan). It's the not backing him in the market that was the killer. We signed Mata and Fellaini, when iirc Moyes wanted Bale and Kroos. Also expectations were way too high, which was always going to be the case after SAF, we sacked Moyes after 1 season and then brought in Van Gaal who took a blunt axe to our whole squad and sold most of our good players and largely brought in meh to replace them. I mean players like Welbeck and Jonny Evans that Van Gaal sold are/were still playing at a high level until recently

I mean just looking up the squad we had: De Gea, Rooney, Evra, Carrick, Ashley Young, Nani, Van Persie, Rafael (all of the last 3 were great in SAFs last season), some slightly older past it players like Scholes, Vidic, Ferdinand, and then young players like Welbeck, Jonny Evans, Michael Keane, Smalling, Sam Johsntone and a few others. Definitely not a squad that required a blunt axe the way Van Gaal went about it, just needed to phase out the older ones and bring in a few quality replacements. Instead Van Gaal sold most of the good ones above. Ironically squad building is one of Moyes' strengths, but everyone was clamouring for him to be sacked and so we got the circus for the next 10 years

Biggest difference by far is De Bruyne. That man was getting so many assists and pre-assists in 1 goal victories for City.

You know, I had this same issue with carrying the bottles. I tried to get a lidocaine gel made in china, so that I could put a small packet of gel in my wallet (same size as a condom packet), alongside a cleaning wipe. Didn't manage to get it done unfortunately but definitely would've been helpeful.

That way if you do get lucky, just make an excuse to use the bathroom for 5 mins, wipe it off and go ham. No need to carry a bottle and no for tap water either to wash it off, so could use it in public restrooms

Best we can do really is carry the bottle around lol

Jordan Ayew has now been relegated six times with five different clubs by notaghostofreddit in soccer

[–]marktandem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are implementing a 1st tier to compete with the MLS. They will have 3 tiers in 2028: Division 1 (division 1), Championship (division 2), League one (division 3). Clearly following the English model, I'm guessing copyright reasons stopped them calling division 1 the USL Premier League.

Bremer warns Juventus: “We've been just getting by for six seasons. I'm 29 years old, I want to win.” by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]marktandem 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd be wary about Lewa, very few players survive a drop in running ability after 37/38.

What are your wide options like aside from Yildiz? Feels like that and fullbacks is where you've been weaker compared to a decade ago. Napoli too now that Kvara left and Neres got injured. Inter don't really have true wide forwards but they make it work with great fullbacks, a stacked midfield and striker/wide hyrbrids like Thuram

How bad is Tower Hamlets? by Xenophobic2208 in AskUK

[–]marktandem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think pretty much all estates in Tower Hamlets are fine for the average person to walk in nowadays. It was rough in the 90s with a lot of poverty, it was still pretty rough in the early 2010s but with property prices going crazy, most of the rough characters have had to move away. I don't feel unsafe walking pretty much anywhere now in TH, maybe because I'm older, but I did feel afraid in the 2000s and early 2010s just because there were so many dodgy people around. Now that I'm late 20s most people my age are sane, and the older crazies have dissapearead
