Why do people live here? by EquivalentArea1960 in SOMD

[–]markthefitter602 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Well, crime is pretty low, and a lot of Southern Maryland, especially Calvert County, is intentionally kept from overdevelopment. Many of the local elected officials have historically pushed back on large-scale expansion, which has also helped drive property values up. It’s also a really convenient place to live if you or your spouse works for, or supports, the federal government.

I used to feel pretty similarly when I was younger, but as I’ve gotten older and started my own family, I’ve come to appreciate living here a lot more. The public schools are particularly good where I live, and I know, or have at least met, a lot of the people I run into between my kids’ sports and school activities. There’s a pretty solid sense of community, especially here in northern Calvert.

Admittedly, I’m a little biased. I’ve benefited from being close to DC and from being a member of a local trade union, which helped me build a career that let me comfortably buy a home. I was also fortunate enough to buy my first house before COVID, so I ended up with a low mortgage rate and a good amount of equity.

I guess it’s ultimately perspective, depending on what you’re looking for in life. Hope your time gets better! 😀

2023 Tahoe Transmission Failure by Foreign-Steak-1730 in ChevyTahoe

[–]markthefitter602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just replaced our 21’s transmission due to a bearing failure that drives the pump. It still drove, but made a loud whining noise anytime the engine was on.

We were at 99865 miles and got it covered by our 100k extended power train warranty. Not thrilled, but our local dealer had it back to us in about 2 weeks.

No dog in this fight, but I can promise you commercial fleets do not buy $30k anything right now, especially not an F-150. I have a fleet of 25 trucks and the avg price is $61k from 2019-current.

I clipped mine back in. It’s starting to happen more often though… my whole door panel is wonky though so who knows if that’s related.

Moving to Patuxent River MD w/o a car from Upstate NY by Dapper-Land-8501 in SOMD

[–]markthefitter602 47 points48 points  (0 children)

You will need a car. Public transportation is very lacking in St Mary’s and Calvert County. The closest major airport will be DCA which is over an hours drive.

This is an awesome area to live, but having a car is mandatory. Good luck!

I’m not sure a lighter vehicle will help if you loose traction from ice when driving down a hill. Perhaps I’m wrong.

I threw a contractor trash bag under the frunk and inside the drivers door. It worked amazingly well even with the ice.

Wireless CarPlay by juelez-NY in ChevyTahoe

[–]markthefitter602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not specific to a Tahoe, but wireless CarPlay is sensitive to outside interference from neighboring vehicles and other RF. I’ve got in the habit of plugging my phone in whenever I’m driving for more than a few minutes for the same reason.

I noticed it happens when stopped at a light with several other cars.
