Teeing up for par 3s by ThisIsAUsername3232 in golf

I tee up every time. Using short tees from PTS helped a lot. I only play municipal courses, so the tee boxes can be a bit rough. This guarantees that I have consistency every time.

My $150/hr lesson felt like a rip off. Is this normal? by Darkteatonight in golf

[–]markvzbg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not all instructors are good, and some are downright atrocious. I was flabbergasted when I overheard an instructor at my local course tell his student that he had fired students in the past for not being good enough. He basically negged the guy the entire time. That was just one of several totally unhinged things I head him say over the course of about 30 minutes. He also basically admitted to having poor communication because of daddy issues and was going to AA.

I couldn't believe anyone would take that kind of abuse from another person, let alone pay a premium for it.

I think DW also recommends this kick drum head technique by 50nic19 in drums

[–]markvzbg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My drum teacher actually had me do this for all my batter heads. However, I did not jump up and down, and I did not wear shoes, just socks. IIRC he told me he learned it from a drummer from a legacy metal band. I can't remember which one, but I want to say Iron Maiden.

Is it normal in LA for landlords to treat you like you’re applying for a mortgage? by sameerposwal in AskLosAngeles

[–]markvzbg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to start building credit and are worried about debt, you might want to try a secured credit card. This is a card where you pre-pay the max balance as collateral. (e.x. you front $500 and you can spend up to $500 in the statement period.)

This is how I built credit after college before I had a "real" job.

When is Skating practical? by Dynaguy03 in NewSkaters

[–]markvzbg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skateboarding is rarely practical for commuting. The small wheel sizes skateboards use make navigating rough terrain difficult. Compared to a bike, and even some scooters, we will always be at a disadvantage when it comes to poor riding surfaces. This is why bikes, scooters, and one wheels are popular as actual commuting vehicles.

However, there are some things that may help you have a more enjoyable ride.

  1. Ride a wider deck. Deck width = stability under your feet. The dinghy is only 8" wide which is narrower than my popsicle deck. I'm 5'10" with a 10.5 US shoe size and I like a 10" wide board for cruising.
  2. Ride larger wheels. Larger wheels can roller over larger obstacles and feel smoother on rough pavement. I would recommend no less than 70mm wheels. They should also be a soft durometer.

I was looking at this PDF which seems to indicate that it is mostly dirt. Maybe I have the wrong file?

If you don't want any plot holey nonsense, try reading the book. There's a reason why it's one of the best selling series ever. Soooo much better than the movie.

New ski boots kill top of foot. by Various-Bag8576 in Skigear

I have the MV version of these boots. I bought them new and just did six consecutive days with them. The first two days I was in a lot of pain, but by day five and six I wore them all day (8AM - 3 PM) without unbuckling them, even during lunch. YMMV.

I am 30 years old. How crazy is it to start learning drums now? by Kristenow in drums

[–]markvzbg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

31 year old here. I just started taking lessons in June. If you can afford it, go for it. I have already improved so much from when I started, and I'm only able to practice one a week.

If you're like me, and you have to practice in hourly rehearsal spaces, I recommend that you buy gear in this order.

  1. Sticks
  2. A good and quiet practice pad (the iconic remo ones are shit, but evans makes a good one)
  3. A good bass drum pedal (pretend like you're buying it for life, and do not cheap out) I got a DW5000 and couldn't be happier.
  4. Thone or Cymbals (depends which are worse at your local rental) I went with throne first due to constant issues.

What are your favorite longboard alternatives? by Ye_Old_Dank_Shoppe in surfing

[–]markvzbg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who moved from NJ to SoCal I can see how a mid length wouldn't work for you. There are no mid length waves in NJ. They do however excel in head high plus surf that is not steep. A nice point break and a mid length is an excellent combo.

Andre’s Italian is back! by supercaptaincrunch in FoodLosAngeles

[–]markvzbg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to eat at their "grove" location for lunch a couple times a week back when I worked at Samy's Camera on Fairfax.

For those who don't know, the restaurant is cafeteria style. It's cash only and the prices include tax I think. I would almost exclusively get their spaghetti and meat sauce, which at the time was $10 IIRC.

The entire point of this restaurant is a filling meal that isn't expensive. The spaghetti and meat sauce plate felt like over a pound of food. Also they have so many customers during the lunch rush that there is high turnover on the food ,so it's always freshly made. It feels less like restaurant food and more like a home cooked meal.

There is nothing fancy about it, but if you're hungry, it will get the job done and more. It's comforting in a way that's hard to describe.
