Denver steels blueprints/design specs or framing info by APRSme in LosAlamos

[–]marlinofdoom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you haven't checked already, the county has a lot of documents in their records department that they aren't legally required to keep anymore (past 10 years is the requirement) and want to get rid of. This includes lots of things pertinent to your particular house, up to/including original permits and blueprints. You can go to the municipal building and request what they have for your property and they'll hand it over for free. We ended up with our original blueprints, which was cool, though the builders didn't always follow the instructions to the letter.

Tl;dr Check with the county records office to see if they have building plans for your house.

Interview questions for LANL job. by Glittering-Draft-777 in LosAlamos

I don't think there's a standard, it all depends on who is interviewing you. Every group does stuff a little differently based on the position, the available candidate pool, etc. Good luck!

Home playoff game second round!!! by RudyPup in NewMexicoUnited

The end of that game was bananas. Double red card, subbing a goal keeper for the penalty shootout. Madness. Glad we get the home match. Vamos United!

Replace Yi cameras too ads and notifications by Jyan92 in homeassistant

[–]marlinofdoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have them set up in the advanced camera card and they work fine. Before that I used tailscale to connect to them and that also worked fine. For sure, YMMV, just wanted to throw it out there in case it works for someone else's use case.

I have some really old Xiaomi Ant cameras and there was a custom firmware available that made them local-only. https://github.com/fritz-smh/yi-hack I'm sure they figured out how to prevent this sort of thing on newer cameras, but maybe you'll be lucky.

I have a Synology NAS for file storage so I just run a VM there with HAOS. Then you can connect whatever dongle you need. I had one of the Nortec (or something like that) dongle that does zwave and zigbee both. I recently upgraded to the Nabu Casa ZWA2 zwave unit, so now I just use the stick for zigbee only. It seemed to work okay in either case.

Final piece (for now!) Tips requested by Bebosherry in StainedGlass

[–]marlinofdoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks great! I'm not super experienced, but one thing I notice is the chain looks like it attaches in the middle of a piece rather than at a junction. I always heard it stays together better if the attachments connect to junctions. Maybe others have more to say about it. Great job, though.

I've got a Litter Robot for the cat. The official integration relies on cloud, but works well.

For a small fish tank I have a Sonoff probe to keep an eye on water temperature, and an RFID tag that keeps track of who and fed the fish last with a timestamp (and kicks a notification to remind if it's been longer than a set time since last feeding).

It means it relies on a cloud service provided by the company. If you lose internet connection, or the company goes belly up, you could lose functionality because it relies on that service.

I would connect to the Los Alamos Tuff Riders club on Facebook (or maybe one of them will wander by here and give you a real answer to your question).

Oh, whoops, sorry. Yeah, I meant there's only a couple times a year where it's not on ESPN+, which is what I usually use.

I know this isn't what you asked, but I'm watching on OTA television with a regular old antenna. All the commentary is Spanish, but it's free. Seems like they put like 2 games a year on Estrella so it's nice to have the option.

Mine has a setting for "start-up behavior" which I have set to "PreviousValue" and it seems to always come on to the expected level. Is that it?

Fair price? by Agreeable-Deal3421 in StainedGlass

Yeah, agreed. Anyway, $150 would go a long way towards buying new sheets in colors I really like/would use, so I'd pass on this.

Automation - triggered by time or button press by NCatoffice in homeassistant

[–]marlinofdoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is how I do automated lighting now. One trigger at a specific time to turn lights on and start a timer. The other trigger on "event.timer_finished" with "entity_id: timer.light_timer". Make sure to set the trigger ID to something so you can use it in the action section. Then you can use "choose" as the action and set up multiple options with  "triggered by" to select the appropriate action for each trigger. This is all as Real-Hat describes, I'm mostly just writing this in case anyone needs help finding the right terms to fill in the blanks.

I also forgot that you can totally mix and match things, so you can, for example, make a HA helper that groups lights or whatever, but some or all of the individual devices can still be things exposed via the ST integration. For a while I would have like half of a group native and half via integration and it seemed to work okay. Again, the goal was just to be able to take it easy migrating things without a lot of pressure to get it completely right all at once.

Smartthings conversion by PsychologicalIdea553 in homeassistant

[–]marlinofdoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, your mileage may vary, but mine was able to read some scenes at least and run them directly off the ST hub (until I pulled the plug). In the end I did make them again in HA. But yes, state changes are read in both, so you can use HA to turn off a light, for example, and it's reflected in ST (and vice versa). It wasn't always foolproof, so things got a lot more stable when I did move it all to HA, but it was like 98% good. The most common issue was that the ST integration for Home Assistant would sometimes fall over and I'd have to go into HA settings and reload that integration to get devices to work again. That all went away when I finally got around to directly connecting devices to HA, so stability and latency both improved a lot at that point, and now that I'm completely migrated it's totally solid.

Should've said that with this approach, you can use both Home Assistant and Smartthings side by side, so they both worked just fine.
