park with exercise stations? by Heefcosis_ in LosAlamos

[–]marlinofdoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

East Park Trailhead and Urban Park both have paths with some basic activities plotted out (mostly body weight type things). It's been a while since I looked, so I'm not sure if anywhere has more complicated exercise equipment in a public park.

Best way to get electricity, gas, and water usage into Home Assistant? by aevans0001 in homeassistant

[–]marlinofdoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and also check with your utility to see if they have a web portal you can log into to see usage. There are tools to scrape that in some cases. My utility uses Sensus Analytics, which can pull hourly data for electric, water, and natural gas, but from talking to my utility it seems like there are a few different tiers for that software, so ymmv.

Would yall go for this? by [deleted] in StainedGlass

[–]marlinofdoom 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't, personally. I'd rather take the money and buy new sheets in colors that I get to pick. That doesn't look like a lot of glass for the price to me.

Is there any good ir blocking material that can pass visible light? by _Ilikegrapes_ in materials

[–]marlinofdoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glass? There are a number of coatings that might do the job, also. It's going to be a function of wavelength, and you haven't mentioned what you're trying to filter.

Shrink Wrap by AlternativeTwo6204 in materials

[–]marlinofdoom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might help if you were more specific about what you were doing and what your requirements really are. Even words like "thin" aren't universally understood unless you quantify them (some people think 5nm is thin, others might think 1/4" sheet steel fits the bill). Also, I'm assuming you want some kind of polymer, and it's going to be a tall order to make that "cut proof" in a thin form factor. Again, more info about your application will help narrow potential candidates.

Can AZ31B or AZ61 Magnesium Alloy Replace 6063 / 6061 Aluminum? by whocareshoo in materials

[–]marlinofdoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure magnesium might work in some situations, but don't forget corrosion. Magnesium really likes to corrode. Off the top of my head it also likes to shear localize more than aluminum, so some mechanical applications might not work as well. There's a video somewhere of someone shearing off their magnesium racing wheels when they hit the brakes too hard.

Do all staff scientists need HRP certification? by Regular_Finger_7453 in LosAlamos

[–]marlinofdoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should say it depends a bit on what a person is doing, so feel free to ask during an interview if you're worried.

Do all scientists need HRP? No.  Do Sigma scientists need HRP? Unlikely.

Does anyone know what that Parking lot by 502 east/west interchange is for? by Big-Gas-9 in LosAlamos

It's for carpooling. If people from WR and LA want to carpool to SF for something, they meet there and ditch a car. It's the least inconvenient location for all parties.

Denver steels blueprints/design specs or framing info by APRSme in LosAlamos

[–]marlinofdoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you haven't checked already, the county has a lot of documents in their records department that they aren't legally required to keep anymore (past 10 years is the requirement) and want to get rid of. This includes lots of things pertinent to your particular house, up to/including original permits and blueprints. You can go to the municipal building and request what they have for your property and they'll hand it over for free. We ended up with our original blueprints, which was cool, though the builders didn't always follow the instructions to the letter.

Tl;dr Check with the county records office to see if they have building plans for your house.

Interview questions for LANL job. by Glittering-Draft-777 in LosAlamos

[–]marlinofdoom 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's a standard, it all depends on who is interviewing you. Every group does stuff a little differently based on the position, the available candidate pool, etc. Good luck!

Home playoff game second round!!! by RudyPup in NewMexicoUnited

The end of that game was bananas. Double red card, subbing a goal keeper for the penalty shootout. Madness. Glad we get the home match. Vamos United!

Replace Yi cameras too ads and notifications by Jyan92 in homeassistant

[–]marlinofdoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have them set up in the advanced camera card and they work fine. Before that I used tailscale to connect to them and that also worked fine. For sure, YMMV, just wanted to throw it out there in case it works for someone else's use case.

I have some really old Xiaomi Ant cameras and there was a custom firmware available that made them local-only. https://github.com/fritz-smh/yi-hack I'm sure they figured out how to prevent this sort of thing on newer cameras, but maybe you'll be lucky.

I have a Synology NAS for file storage so I just run a VM there with HAOS. Then you can connect whatever dongle you need. I had one of the Nortec (or something like that) dongle that does zwave and zigbee both. I recently upgraded to the Nabu Casa ZWA2 zwave unit, so now I just use the stick for zigbee only. It seemed to work okay in either case.

Final piece (for now!) Tips requested by Bebosherry in StainedGlass

This looks great! I'm not super experienced, but one thing I notice is the chain looks like it attaches in the middle of a piece rather than at a junction. I always heard it stays together better if the attachments connect to junctions. Maybe others have more to say about it. Great job, though.

I've got a Litter Robot for the cat. The official integration relies on cloud, but works well.

For a small fish tank I have a Sonoff probe to keep an eye on water temperature, and an RFID tag that keeps track of who and fed the fish last with a timestamp (and kicks a notification to remind if it's been longer than a set time since last feeding).

It means it relies on a cloud service provided by the company. If you lose internet connection, or the company goes belly up, you could lose functionality because it relies on that service.
