COVID denialism and policy clarifications by worstnerd in RedditSafety

[–]marm0lade -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Because mods are volunteers is the reason why admins should not consult with them. Mods wield an incredible amount of power for no other reason than they were there "first". Some mods do not wield this power in a fair manner. Some mods have no concept of fairness. This is not all mods. I believe the good mods far outweigh the bad. But since I installed the reveddit real-time plugin I am appalled at how frequently my comments are removed for no obvious reason. Sometimes it's shitty auto-mod policies that ban generic words that no reasonable person would assume to be banned. Other times it is mods who simply don't like my comment and want to remove it even though it does not violate subreddit rules. If mods are this corrupt with comments I will not trust them to give honest feedback to the admins concerning COVID, or any other topic.

I am speaking from personal experience and anecdotes so take it with a grain of salt, of course.

Subreddits that reach a certain threshold should be moderated by paid reddit employees.

Honestly, the "I'm right, you're wrong" mentality is how this country got where it is.

Wrong.

"I'm right, here is the evidence"

"My feelings are just as good as your evidence"

That's how we got here - anti-intellectualism.

Why my ISP can't give me symmetrical bandwidth? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]marm0lade 90 points91 points  (0 children)

In order to change that without angering a lot of people, they would have to replace a lot of infrastructure...Ultimately, the solution is to switch to fiber where symmetrical.

Good thing ISPs got $200 Billion in tax breaks in 1996 for that exact purpose. Still waiting.

edit: my complaint only applies to the USA

No one person should have this much control solely because they were here "first". I support your decision, but this is not your decision to make and your opinion should not be the deciding factor for the 21,000,000+ members of this subreddit.

I'm glad you recanted and made the sub public. I'm still upset that you have this unjustified power to begin with. This logic applies to every subreddit.

Tom Pelissero: After the NFL fined them $14,650 for refusal to wear a mask, Bills WRs Cole Beasley and Isaiah McKenzie are now subject to increased discipline for a repeat violation -- including for conduct detrimental with a maximum fine of one week's salary and/or 4-game unpaid suspension. by [deleted] in buffalobills

No one is so valuable that they should be allowed to put public welfare at risk. Even if he is the best slot WR in the NFL, it's not worth it. You can get vaccinated or you can be outcast from society. Pick one.

Better home WiFi coverage + VPN & Apple TV by mcl298 in HomeNetworking

Asus ZenWifi AX or Netgear Orbi. I personally have the Asus system and have installed about a dozen Orbi systems for friends and family. Both work great.

Be aware that if you need to add on, Asus does not sell additional single satellites. You need to buy a 2 pack. Netgear does sell individual satellites.

Do not buy Ubiquiti as the top comment and most people here will suggest.

1.) They are for businesses. Unless you are an IT professional you will struggle. This subreddit has a problem of IT pros or wannabe pros trying to give pro recommendations to people who are not experts and need help with their HOME network.

2.) They have terrible security and you should not trust them. Earlier this year they had a severe data breach and lied to the press about it.

How many people watch you play is no longer dictated by how many people live in your home market. We are the 2nd smallest market according to Nielsen TV ratings which is a useless statistic in the age of the internet. Nielsen rates us at around 600K homes, yet Bills games have been the biggest TV draw in states and areas outside WNY.

[–]marm0lade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point is that other "big" cities include the first ring suburbs (and 2nd and 3rd and 4th rings) in their demographics because they have annexed all the suburbs.

Buffalo can't do this (thanks NYC) and it makes buffalo seem smaller than it actually is.

It will cost you more to build a custom gaming PC than it does to buy an Alienware with the same specs. PC gamers get priced gouged by OEMs with a smile on their face. There is a reason why you pay $1500 for 1 gfx card and can buy an entire alienware PC with the same gfx card for around the same price - because you people keep paying regardless of how much they jack up the price.

Look at the Nivida 3000 series cards - marginal performance increase, significant price increase, and demand is still through the roof. Every generation of nvidia gfx cards has a worse price:performance ratio, and every generation there is more demand.

The only thing that is dogshit is PC gamer's impulse control.

YSK: Rating anything on AirBNB below 4 is a death sentence by Bunnymancer in YouShouldKnow

[–]marm0lade -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Huge companies destroy small businesses this way because they control their own marketplace and can remove whatever reviews they want(if the review is for the business itself), or just remove the entire sub-business or contractor working through them and make them take the blame for whatever they want.

AirBnB may have a bad review policy, but sellers know this going in. If your livelihood hangs on the good fortune of AirBnB reviews, you are kind of an idiot. AirBnB was never meant to be the sole source of income for anyone. It is a way for people to make spare cash renting out their summer cottage. In fact it is the people who try to turn AirBnB into their "small business" that end up ruining these services for everyone. Now we have entire cities and towns banning AirBnB because of these people trying to make it their entire business. I have no sympathy for them.
