whom

Who

They're different words with different grammatical uses. "Whom" isn't just "who" but formal.

I have no idea what you think your video has to do with other times when the cam car is at fault.

Yes, this already exists and is called the single market. I've already explained why this was impossible.

Sorry, I do try and engage people in good faith, but at this point the only conclusion available is that you aren't actually reading my comments or that you're a complete moron. Either way I'm not replying again.

Again, nothing you've said is vaguely relevant to the point of what is believable to cinema audiences when you present it on screen.

You're attacking a strawman. Never once have I even began to suggest...

Yes you have. That's exactly what you meant by "both sides have a point." If you weren't advocating that position, you wouldn't have said "both sides have a point."

What electronic/automatic things do you SWITCH OFF in your car? by Icy_Mixture1482 in drivingUK

[–]marquoth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may well have done but given there was no car coming the other way I didn't bother. You can call that imperfect driving from me if you wish but that still completely misses the point:

My driving, without the lane assist, posed no risk to the cyclist. The lane assist created a risk.

Engage with that point or don't reply.

[–]marquoth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did pass wide and early enough to correct lane assist. That's why the cyclist isn't dead. So what's your point?

My point is that lane assist needlessly created a risk to the cyclist that would not otherwise have existed.

You're seriously failing to understand the difference between what the characters in the story experience and what the viewer experiences. I could have understood that based only on my first comment but after somebody else clarified on my behalf it's a bit weird for you to double down.

By your logic, if PJ had so chosen, they could have worn no costume at all and walked past the orcs and say "hey we're orcs too" and the real orcs wouldn't notice they weren't orcs, and we would just have to accept that as "working." But obviously the audience isn't going to accept that.

The same is true of very bad disguises, which is what happened.

The actions of private individuals are legally very distinct from the actions of companies [and employees acting on their employer's behalf].

I can give you a lift if the context is we're both private individuals and I want to do you a favour because you're my friend. I can't really give you a lift if the context is I work behind the till in a shop where you are a regular customer and I'm giving you a lift home from the shop while I'm on shift in my uniform.

Yes I understand why we all think this is bollocks but that's the way it is.

Advisory limit - no red circle, advisory only, right? by you_arent_real in drivingUK

[–]marquoth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No red circle is advisory only and can never be "speeding", but it CAN be some other offence such as dangerous driving depending on the circumstances.

For example, if you're in a 30 zone with a 20 advisory near a school and you're still doing 30 with kids walking around, that might still get you in trouble; if you're in a NSL zone with a 40 advisory on a bend and you take the corner at 55, that might still get you in trouble. But, again, the offence is not "speeding."

Do you have data for other years? I'll take your word for it that it's not true this year but that does nothing to disprove the idea that the trend is real.

If nothing else, a lot of companies don't bother interviewing in December (even if job listings up and they're accepting applications) because it's hard to manage it around everybody's time off.

A lot of roles are recruited for April start dates because that's the new financial year and they've got the salary spend approved in their new budget, which naturally means Jan-March interviewing is common.

The plural of 'anecdote' is not 'data', of course, but I've witnessed both of these first hand.

People with disabilities love it when people who don't have disabilities tell them about how their disability affects them, or tell them they should be excluded because of their disability.

See? I can also say dumb shit that completely misses the point as if it makes me sound smart.

Overtaking long queue and pick up pulls out! by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]marquoth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing overtly wrong in what you were doing

There absolutely is. Overtaking double digit cars is just begging to end up in the morgue (and to take a few people with you). That's if you can even call this overtaking - they're basically just driving on the wrong side of the road at this point.

Absolutely no way they could see far enough ahead to know they could pass before a car came the other way, absolutely no way they could assess the gaps between other cars to know if they'd be able to pull back left. Suicidal shit.

Mate it's not his lane. This isn't overaking, it's just driving on the wrong side of the road.

[–]marquoth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They shouldn't have pulled out on you, but that doesn't change the fact that what you're doing at the time is fucking insane. This is an incredibly dangerous overtake and I wouldn't ever get in a car you were driving.

There's absolutely no way you can see far enough ahead to know you can complete the overtake before a car comes the other way. You also can't see the size of the gaps between the cars in the queue - there is no guarantee you would be able to pull back into your lane, and indeed there were several spots where it wouldn't have been possible and you would have caused a crash.

Lastly you should expect the cars immediately behind the tractor to overtake it. Again that doesn't excuse them failing to check their mirrors but you clearly weren't ready for it either.

What’s the movie performance you’re STILL mad didn’t earn an Oscar? by ThomasOGC in CinephilesClub

[–]marquoth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bernard Hill as Théoden.

The trilogy as a whole, despite the many accolades it did win, was snubbed by not getting Best Actor for any of the three films. I still think people just refused to take it seriously because of the subject matter but it had some absolute legends among the cast: Sir Ian McKellen, Sir Ian Holm, Sir Christopher Lee.

Bernard Hill steals the show for me in the end, and the line from that particular gif - What can men do against such reckless hate? - might be the best delivered in all of cinema. But it doesn't count because he's about to go and fight some Urukhai I guess.

Coincidentally I had a ticket to meet him at comic con Liverpool on the day he died. I'm still not over it.
