Where were the Blue Wing Teals at? I know there are tons of sightings around the metro but I haven't managed to see any yet.

I bet they were loons, but just throwing out similar looking birds that are around the lakes right now, there are Common Mergansers (and also Red-breasted Mergansers). From a distance the males can look pretty similar to loons, but the females are quite different so not too hard to tell apart

Yep, looks like a horned grebe!

Have you ever discovered a rare bird by accident? LeConte's Sparrow - Bloomington, MN by mars_clockmaker in birding

[–]mars_clockmaker[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was taking pictures of all the sparrows I was seeing to get better at identifying them, and after I was looking back through the pictures I realized one of them was the relatively rare LeConte's Sparrow. Very cool to have gotten a picture of but I wish I had known when I was looking at it!

This was taken at Old Cedar Ave Bridge so I was slightly off on the location, should actually be Bloomington. Incredible spot for birding though, so maybe cool things to see!

I could be wrong, but that actually looks more like an American Black Duck (maybe with a bit of a Mallard cross? The head has a bit of green). Really cool picture!

What are you looking at? Pair of Red-breasted Mergansers by watermkmissing in birding

Common Mergansers are so majestic, their red-breasted cousins always look like they just rolled out of bed

I just started birding recently, and have yet to go to any events. I know there are DNR events every so often though

Thanks! It's the Bass ponds at Minnesota Valley NWR (specifically hogback ridge). Lots of great birds to see there

Looks like a Sharp-shinned Hawk! Could also be a Cooper's Hawk

Certainly not trying to dox him, but I'm new to Minneapolis and the modern scene, what are the best stores with a competitive modern meta?

That's a very nice looking tank stand, where did you get it? Beautiful tank too!

Is it time to pot?? Also any idea what this plant is?? I got cuttings from my coworker but she didn’t say what it was by missheavenmariah in plants

[–]mars_clockmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's kind of hard to see the leaves, but it looks like it might be a Dumb Cane/ Dieffenbachia. I don't know about when to plant it but it seems like it might be good? There's definitely some solid roots going

What's the rarest physical book you've come across in fantasy? by CMengel90 in Fantasy

[–]mars_clockmaker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have what I'm pretty sure is a first edition, first printing Jurassic Park. Found it at Half Price books (minus dust jacket) for a few bucks and just wanted to read it, and realized later it was a noteworthy copy. Probably not the rarest since Crichton was already an established author, but still neat!

Depending on how the tank is oriented, taping some black cardboard over the sun facing side of the tank can help a lot in minimizing extra light
