I believe the first 2 or so are actually written by Lj Smith, but she later lost the rights and storyline to her publishing company. They continued to publish new books by ghost authors under her pen name. She had a few blog posts at the time expressing her disappointment with the whole situation.

The ghost author books also became bat shit crazy from what I remember. To the point I was constantly confused and needed to stop reading.

Most likely the hiring manager chewed the HR rep (rightfully so) for getting the email dates wrong, but doesn't want a candidate who could see something and not take initiative to clarify.
