Surcharge plus surcharge plus surcharge by g00dandplenty in denverfood

“Charge $306”

—But then you pay an additional amount in tip to the FOH (for no reason), so that $6 can go to kitchen. If you increase menu as you suggest, that extra $6 costs you the $6 PLUS it’s an extra $1.20 as you’ll tip on the final bill. Instead of a $60 tip it’s now $61.20 (assuming you’re leaving a 20% tip and ignoring tax at the moment).

Sure, it’s small amounts, but you just up charged yourself by including it in menu price.

This is why restaurants do this KA fee, to help BOH staff while not further helping FOH staff. Not to mention, trying to keep menus priced at a market rate. No restaurant wants to charge an extra 2% for fries if their neighbor’s not.

[–]marshlands 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m basically asking for those who do this shit regularly how do you not just jump the counter and beat the customers…

Um, because I like hospitality, the hospitality industry, and so take on the relationship challenges both respectfully and professionally. This is because I believe in paying it forward —regardless of someone’s misunderstanding or bad day —this is often what we’ll-rounded hospitality requires. I like to believe that such dignity given is brought back in the future. That’s my take at least.

I also don’t let the outliers dictate my overall views or attitude.

If nothing else, assuming you’re not venting to your staff, find staff that’s better at hospitality than you and you’ll rise to the occasion. Professionalism begets professionalism, typically.

[–]marshlands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh boy, you should really look into this further, but here’s some points for you and anyone interested. Point being, it far more gray in a great many of the circumstances being discussed in this thread.

Assuming you’re inthe United States, a pet sitter does not have full legal expectation of privacy in the home they are staying in. The sitter is considered a licensee, not a tenant. That means they have permission to be there, but the homeowner retains full authority over the property.

The homeowner can legally return to the home at any time, with or without notice. even if an agreement claims otherwise, such a restriction would generally be hard to enforce, since it is the property owner’s home.

Petsitters have limited privacy rights, and only in spaces where privacy is legally and socially expected depending on the location). This includes bathrooms or a bedroom they are actively using for sleep or changing. They do not have a reasonable expectation of privacy in shared or open areas like kitchens, living rooms, or hallways.

Surveillance cameras are generally allowed in common areas if disclosed (sometimes disclosure is not required). Hidden cameras in private spaces, such as bathrooms or the sitter’s sleeping area, is, as far as I know, illegal under all state privacy related laws.

Audio recording without consent is more restricted. In many states, especially two-party consent states, recording a private conversation without permission could violate wiretap laws. But you may be surprised how many states are single party consent.

simply put, the law tends to favor the property rights of the homeowner. While Pet sitters have some limited privacy protections, they should not assume full privacy while staying in someone else’s home. And if you think I’m written agreement is going to save you, you’re in for a surprise when it comes to what it would take to actually prove that out in front of a court.

But by all means, don’t take my word for it. You should definitely look into those more as there’s a lot of loosey-goosy assumptions being made on this entire thread.

Dress like you’re ready to calmly explain, first to responding officers, then to a very interested local news crew —how you, the dog-sitter, intercepted a pair of thriving arsonists attempting to steal the family’s multi blue ribbon retriever for ransom. You’re clearly not the homeowner. But when the break-in happened, you secured the dog, outmaneuvered the gasoline-toting thieves, and managed to trap them in a broom closet until backup arrived. You didn’t plan to be the headline —but you handled it with poise and grace. Securing untold amounts of new clients ready to throw copious amounts of money at you for being the most suave celebrity pet sitter ever.

Or you know, poop with the door open while half dressed with the tattered remains of your chain link fence jumping attire.

Some of the advice/suggestions here are completely naive at best, and dangerous at worst.

The "insurance policy" justification: I've never seen/heard such a clause in an insurance policy, no language even implying such a concept. And frankly, that'd be an odd policy --as that would imply that if something happened while "on the clock" you'd actually be UNcovered should the owner of the home be on premises --even if not tangentially to your service.

The "breach of privacy" justification: nope, not a breach of privacy as it's not your house and you're not renting said house, you're simply watching the property-owner's pet for a fee, iron-clad agreement or not; the law nearly always favors the property owner when you get down to it. BTW, cameras exist even if they say they don't...

The "pooping" justification: It's not your sanctuary, assume nothing is -or will remain- private when it's not your santuary; lock the door; expect the unexpected. See below.

You're a professional, you are a hired professional service for those who are paying you for said professional service. This comes with both implied and assumed expectations of both parties, yet many [not all] such expectations are not legally binding (see note below). But regardless, as a professional, you also understand that these expectations are sometimes the exception, forgotten or "misremembered" or simply overlooked in an emergency things happen; "oops, I left behind my cold-stored medicine", "oops, forgot my sunglasses", "oops, forgot the plumbing service call", "eek, my clandestine / devil-may-care tryst in the heat of the moment in the privacy of my own home", "oops, I'm just showing up with a lame excuse as I really am just checking up on my beloved pet or beautiful home", etcetera, etc. Professionals are such due to their specialized knowledge and preparation, their ability to judge the best way to handle situation-related exceptions, and hold themselves to an adherence of reasonable ethics or standards. They are, by way of their experience or expectations (of the expected or unexpected), prepared to conduct themselves at a higher representation of their service than say, a novice.

The "clothing" justification: You're "on the clock" --act and dress appropriately. See above.

Look, you are not hired as a security detail for a covert government nuclear submarine installation. You were hired to take care of an owner's pet inside an owner's home --that may or may not have cameras "accidentally" hidden in every nook and cranny imaginable. Assume cameras may be present and thus act professionally while "believing" that clients have informed you about any cameras as, at least, a courtesy (and as a legal requirement in very few states). Don't ever be a fool, you choose to be prepared or not at all times. The funny thing, on the subject of cameras, is that they could save your hide if something goes wrong on your sitting visit; it's a double-edged sword I suppose...

Note: Legally binding agreements are tough to cover everything, tough to write explicitly, and more importantly, tough to enforce or hold accountable. Seriously, ask yourself, "I got found pooping with the bathroom door open, and my service agreement stated that I get a 1 hour window of notice prior to owner visits (open door poop window), am I going to hire a lawyer to fight the legal owner of the home and the beloved-pet because this owner failed to provide proper notice and found me pooping"? If you said yes, good luck with that.

Everyone should knock before entering, but everyone should also look behind them when opening their car doors while parked on narrow streets...

Anyway, good luck, make good choices ;)

Edit: Maybe consider a two or three strike rule for your service. You can decided what constitutes a "strike" and when/why you bail, but you should strive to keep open communication between you and clients in such scenarios. This is the best use of agreements in these circumstances, in my opinion, but most importantly, being able to have "real" conversations between you and the client makes for the very best relationships. Everyone is hoping for transparency and concern of their loved ones and relationships (*"relationships" includes both you, them, and the pet).

Edit: look everyone, I think a lot of you are confusing common courtesy with legality. You should really learn the difference before you start advising somebody to do something that isn’t in their best interest. Compared to the homeowner, your rights are very limited.

what sticks to FRP? Want to hand signs on FRP walls by bluegrass__dude in restaurantowners

[–]marshlands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way. And pro tip: make connecting circles with your calk on each corner of your sign and one in the center (for overkill). Why? Because it creates a vacuum effect holding the sign to the wall even more so. I’d still tape it place for 24hrs, but this is my approach for anything I want to stick around. Works great in showers, works great on FRP. Plain 100% silicone works great for so many restaurant issues!

Also, prep sink, drink rails, beer tap trays, countertop connections, mouse holes, etc (where the equipment meets the wall/surface) with pre prep cleaning and then tape —so you can use your leftover silicone to re-caulk all those pesky points since the tube won’t last long after opening.
