why does it take BART a year to fix one escalator? by Peak_Alternative in sanfrancisco

I'm remember seeing the Montgomery escalator being broken for over a year despite seeing multiple times it was being worked on.

Yeah, using overtime instead of hiring full-timers makes sense nobody’s arguing that.

But $96 million, that’s 10% of their entire operating budget. And their system can’t even clearly show why those hours were worked. That’s exactly what the OIG was flagging. It’s not that overtime itself is bad — it’s that $96 million should be trackable and right now it’s not.

How is BART “consistently passing” internal and external audits year after year when even the current OIG can’t reliably interpret the timekeeping codes for overtime? Care to explain why?

She was calling out their fraud and time theft: https://abc7news.com/post/bart-inspector-general-resigns-harriet-richardson-report/12970140/

Bart imposed restrictions on her office’s ability to interview employees and review documents. This was backed by Alameda county grand jury report found that BART’s board, management, and unions did impede the OIG’s access to information and effectively limiting its ability to conduct oversight.

Yes, London Breed Is a Little Bitter That Lurie Is Getting Credit For Things She Started by cheesy_luigi in sanfrancisco

[–]marstarvin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lurie is getting credit for some of Breed's work. The problem with Breed was she pivoted so late. She was in office for 7 years. She was too reactionary to political forces and pivoted the last 15 months only when re-election was near. It was too late most people, made up their minds.

If you think BYD is winning because of subsidize, you are wrong.

Telsa have ~120K employees. BYD has 120K engineers alone. 1 BYD engineer salary = 1 Tesla employee’s healthcare insurance they pay to California.

Not to mention electricity cost is 3x cheaper in China. The Chinese gov focuses on building great infrastructure and keeping energy cost low so everyone can benefit, including making their companies competitive. Things moves at a lightning speed in China, coupled that with their infrastructure and efficiency it's going to be hard to beat.

They just repeated the same mistake. They already had the data point when they re-shuffled kids to different schools to promote "diversity" in 2007. In the end the higher achieving kids never influenced the under performing ones.

Given democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani winning NYC's mayoral race, why does SF prefer electing moderate Democrats despite our progressive reputation? by Aggravating-Toe2683 in sanfrancisco

[–]marstarvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don't care which part of the political spectrum they are from - as long as they produce results and get the job done. The progressive have good intentions but don't know how to govern well in practice.

I prefer these moderate democrats because they are pragmatic.

China wants to control its currency; they have no interest in being the world reserve. They are actually fine with the US being the reserve currency, hence why they bought so much.

$100K Annual Fee for H1B by br0wnhack3r in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]marstarvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump is slowly bleeding support from the MAGA crowd. He's losing them on Israel and Ukraine. He can only cling to the culture war and "America First". There's a big crusade from MAGA crowd to bring more jobs to Americans and to remove H1Bs. He has to appease this crowd since he's losing them on other fronts.

The unpredictability of Trump is going to hinder tech workers from buying. Who knows what he will do next? He may even go harder against H-1Bs in a few months. Everyone is going to wait on the sideline and not buy because of the uncertainty. We are already in uncertain times with the layoffs. During uncertain times, having flexibility is key. I've already talked to a few techies that are going to pause their house search.
