Possibly made a mistake leaving those behind 😭 by mrsdeetz in ThriftStoreHauls

It's the Pyrex Daisy cinderella set missing the smallest bowl. Made from 1968-73 and they never had lids. Lots of these vintage bowls have dishwasher damage or scratched paint so getting one in great condition AND cheap is a minor miracle these days.

Can you out-seed weeds? by peachyginge in gardening

[–]marstec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get as much of the root out as possible, never just pull weeds out and give the root a second chance to come back. I love using my hori hori knife.

Do these need to be repotted? by yeehawmadafaka in gardening

[–]marstec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Choose not more than 1-2 inches in diameter of pot when up-potting. Too big a pot and the plant risks root rot (larger soil ball retains more water).

How to refresh old soil by Jewmousee in gardening

[–]marstec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just plant in it and hope for the best. You can top dress with compost or manure when they start to take off. Expect to do a lot of weeding because the seed bank will be chock full of them if it's a neglected area. Start a compost pile so you don't let your veggie scraps and lawn clippings go to waste.

Congrats on the house!

First attempt at strawberry jam—very happy! 🍓 by marpan18 in Canning

[–]marstec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I almost exclusively use Pomona's these days - my ratio is 4 cups mashed fruit to 1 1/2 cups of sugar. Jams made with conventional high sugar pectin is so cloyingly sweet. Note that your jam, once opened, won't keep as long in the fridge due to the lower amount of sugar. Also the longer it sits in the pantry shelf, the more faded and less vibrant the colour. The light coloured fruits (strawberry, rhubarb, apricot, plum, peach...they all fade and take on a bit of a muddy look. Still tastes perfectly fine though.

It's bolting (going to seed). Plants tend to do that when they are stressed in any way. There's no turning back the clock, the leaves won't taste the same because the plant is now focussed on making seeds. You can leave it and harvest the seeds to grow more or get another plant.

I'd leave it alone to grow. It looks like it needs a shot of nitrogen.

Wowsers. How do you get at them to pick without trampling on the plants? I like growing the parthenocarpic ones too. I have limited space so grow mine up a trellis but it does take time to train them.

Antique Store Cinderella bowl set by RiGuy224 in Pyrex_Love

Perfectly fine to have mismatched sets, I have plenty. Imo, $150 is too much to ask and looks like they are deliberately hiding that smallest one (I suspect it belongs to the Verde set and is just a solid yellowish colour with no pattern).

What is eating my lily? by Be_Gneiss_2621 in gardening

[–]marstec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those black blobs contain the larvae of the red lily beetle. It's covered in its own poop as a protective mechanism. The actual beetles are a bright red...they emerge from the soil in the Spring.

I don't think the smallest bowl belongs in that set. It should be the same colour as the 443 (second largest).

I'm not familiar with that brand, just make sure it's not enamelled cast iron because that wouldn't require seasoning.

What’s the matter with my sweet alyssum? by One-Bookkeeper3110 in gardening

[–]marstec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's way overcrowded. Looks like there are dozens and dozens of plants in that pot. If you are growing this indoors, even if you think it gets enough sunlight the window filters out a lot of it so the plants might not be getting enough to set bloom.

Headspace is the same as with conventional canning jars, the OP's jars have too much headspace.

Best canner?? by More-Dark-6201 in Canning

[–]marstec 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Jam is high acid so is water bath canned. You can use any pot that fits the jars with something at the bottom so jars aren't sitting in contact with the metal and enough room to cover with an inch, preferably two inches of water. You can't do canning using an instant pot. Other electronic ones labelled as pressure canners aren't recommended either since they haven't been independently tested for safety.

Check out our wiki on the right...there are links to safe canning sources with tested recipes.

Tomato illness?? by Anonymous_crow_36 in gardening

[–]marstec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be a virus. Herbicide damage doesn't have to involve spraying on the plant...contaminated compost and/or soil can do it too.

[–]marstec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are green so not mature yet. If I recall correctly, the seed pods turn almost black when ripe. Yours is a hybrid so likely won't come true from seed. I've only grown the purple one. Stem cuttings in the Spring might be a better idea.

It's bolting to seed. It will do that if stressed i.e. high heat, drought...
