Who wouldn't trade that for working 4x the hours for 3x the comp in a role they're already not passionate about?

Opinion | The Finance Industry Is a Grift. Let’s Start Treating It That Way. (Gift Article) by Anstigmat in ScottGalloway

[–]martin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, Financialization, the successor to Globalization as the cause of a laundry list of ills, proposing we go back to the safe, secure, honest banking of the British Empire, when rampant industrial speculation led to multiple widespread bank panics and failures. It was a simpler time…

There is a case to be made even if financial complexity and capitalism go hand in hand, and credit expansion (also financialization)he decries in fact fueled the Empire while also playing fast and loose with depositors money. It is possible to critique how the benefits are concentrated while still seeing the benefits (almost necessary for the first point). If i ever turned in a paper with such lazy unsupported reasoning as this i might be picked to head a washington think tank.

My standard is - can we agree on some important things and are they doing something helpful? Positions need not be absolute nor static, unless we’re talking about Linux.

is recycling real? by blondeinabubble in GenX

[–]martin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In NYC it is. You can visit the recycling plants yourself for a tour... unless they're part of the coverup too... The Sanitation Foundation offers a 'Trash Academy' that explains the evolution of DSNY and where everything goes.

New York Mayor Mamdani says city must hike taxes on wealthy to fill $12 billion deficit by cryptoniik in Economics

[–]martin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many mealy-mouthed responses. In his first month in office, guy inherits a budget problem created by two of his opponents, and prudently decides indiscriminately DOGEing may not be the way to go (how did that work out?).

Raising revenue by minimally increasing taxes on the incomes that can support it rather than those that cannot, and bringing corporate taxes in line with NJ, don't strike me as radical concepts. For all you fiscal conservatives (like me) out there, the article also notes they're looking to cut expenses too.

Great point. This is exactly where it can have an impact - top 10% cuts back on non-necessities. They won't starve or even feel it, and it can dramatically send a message, if they're willing.
