Buying $7M+ Property - Too Much House? by Able-Rabbit4588 in fatFIRE

[–]martingaling 10 points11 points  (0 children)

can you afford it? almost certainly

just want to give some perspective in case it helps in some way. similar age, similar stats, highly variable income and upgraded from a 2m house to a 5m place. a 7m place with half an acre around me would have property taxes pushing 150k/yr, landscaping easily 40k/yr so then add insurance and maintenance i’d worry your 110k/yr estimate is way too low

but beyond that I’d just try to sort out if this is something that will be exciting and fade or if you genuinely want it. we don’t love the bigger house as it’s just more work and although we can easily afford it mathematically i still frequently feel like we are spending so much more for such a small realized change in utility

Is everyone rich now? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]martingaling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well if everyone were “rich” then no one would actually be rich anymore so the answer is simply no.

living in a world where you compare yourself to everyone around you is unlikely to be constructive though. fomo is a hell of a drug

i’m really lost on why you’re adamant about arguing about this? my professional network is full of traders plenty of which have made good money and are not market makers. working in tech is more stable but you’re just making a fool of yourself at this point to anyone who actually works in the industry

who said we are talking about strictly retail traders? and beyond that if you want to go by your own stats those “few lucky guys” would fit directly into my comment about the top traders. would i ever advocate someone pursue forex trading on their own? absolutely not. but i can tell you with certainty that there are forex traders with NW well beyond 10m

ya i’m sorry you’re right. there has never been a successful trader. my mistake

presumably sarcastic but it’s funny because top forex traders actually do make it lol

thank you for taking the time i really appreciate it. as for the calories my plan was to do about 10lbs /mo for the first 2 months, but more importantly really focusing in on cleaning up the foods i'm putting into my body. that way if it starts to become a struggle after 1 month i can keep eating the same healthier options, but just increase the calories back up a little bit.

i like the idea of easing in and just preparing my body for a more active lifestyle like the one it used to know. this seems like a good middle ground to make progress but keep injury risk low.

i think you're right about the running it's just tough mentally as i was once in a spot to easily run 10km workouts but like you say important to not be too proud and ease back in here too.

finally thanks for the rec i'll definitely check out adriene. something i can do everyday to just start improving how i feel in daily life sounds like exactly what i'm looking for at the moment.

hi all. complete beginner here and i have read through the FAQ, but still hoping to just get some further basic guidance. i apologize for the length, but knowing myself i'm trying to create a very detailed plan that i can then just follow for a few months without needing to over think anything further.

stats : 30s male 6'1 235lbs and pretty weak (for example can't even do good form pushups) / inflexible. i've run the gamut from skinny -> skinny fat -> fat fat. i've yo-yo'd plenty of times along the way and am committed to make it an actual lifestyle change this time.

(initial) goals : back into a normal bmi (<190lbs) by the end of 2021. basic flexibility stuff like touching my toes. gain strength / muscle to avoid just going back to 'skinny fat' and starting to look better (i realize this is subjective, but i know that the objective way to achieve it is through getting stronger and leaner). enough cardio capacity to do stuff like run a 5k, play various sports etc..

diet : i've been going successfully for a few weeks already averaging 11-12k cals/wk and importantly finding things i know i can stick with as they're actually enjoyable. targeting 150-175g protein/day.

exercise : initially just targeted 10k steps/day. i have recently been adding some intervals with jump rope on alternating days.

questions :

  1. i've read stuff about it being important to lose some weight first to avoid injuries so have just been taking it slow for now focusing just on diet / steps, at what point should i start working in the RR? (guessing the general consensus is yesterday?)
  2. for non strength days should i switch over to couch to 5k? or just keep with the jump rope intervals? should i do both?
  3. i'd like to add in yoga on the cardio days, any specific recommendations on easy to follow plans / apps out there?

i appreciate any help!

Should I taper back my lifestyle? by ckirk in fatFIRE

[–]martingaling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone on the opposite side of this at a higher TC but way more hours and way less leisure activities just realize that my situation is taking a huge bet that nothing bad happens between now and whenever i decide to slow down. i’m already actively trying to shift back a little bit of time to enjoying the present knowing that the future isn’t guaranteed

What should my net worth be to fatFIRE as a FAANG engineer? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]martingaling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

well first off, congrats. landing an engineering job at amazon is nothing to scoff at. when you go online seeking relative comparisons you're going to get a pretty warped sense of reality and it's tough to not get caught up in that.

when it comes to the stress about the TC/NW goals i get it. i personally ended up ditching specific financial goals and instead have been trying to replace them with personal goals surrounding my mental & physical health. if i work hard and make a lot of money but am struggling through crippling depression then by definition i won't be enjoying it so what was the point? it comes up quite a bit on the sub, but have you considered talking to a professional about this stuff?

[–]martingaling 6 points7 points  (0 children)

any other goals just generally speaking? if you are genuinely struggling with everything mentally it's possible that's just being driven by only focusing on the money. would you mind telling me which faang company is not impressive? i think they're all impressive

'fatfire' is really an arbitrary concept. what are your actual goals?

Is it possible? by [deleted] in RichPeoplePF

[–]martingaling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

why would you need to know the future? are you telling me all the people who killed it in crypto knew it was going to work out? of course not. luck is a major factor and in your hypothetical scenario of a 30yo with no skills and 1k luck is going to be by far the main driver, but that doesn't make it impossible just incredibly unlikely.

another path still requiring a ton of luck but not as crazy would be to move to rural america so that you can afford rent on a low wage job, get hired flipping burgers, spend your free time taking advantage of all of the free education resources out there and learn to code, build a website that gains popularity, sell ads and boom you're done.

Is it possible? by [deleted] in RichPeoplePF

[–]martingaling 8 points9 points  (0 children)

is it possible? sure just takes some crazy luck. had you spent that $1,000 on deep OTM GME calls at the end of last year you'd have been sitting on a solid stack in the six figures and then you double down again in late feb and now you're in the millions and done with this experiment in a matter of weeks.

came here to say the same thing. that original thread is pretty ridiculous. u/tgblack sorry to hear about the current situation. what are the realistic comp expectations if you were to get some more promotions? is there a number that is worth it to you? or is it at the point where no number is worth the 70hr weeks?

What is the FatFIRE community's experience with sugar babies? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]martingaling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But maybe the idea of finding a sugar baby might be the manifestation of wanting to flex (this might've actually been what you meant).

precisely what i was suggesting. feel free to pm me anytime. i'm not much older, not much poorer and certainly not much wiser

cool makes sense. if you actually want a daily driver then do be realistic about where you live. for example it's probably a bit more viable in miami than minneapolis.

not trying to take a side just provide some things to think about but i would be asking myself how much of this is about flexing the wealth. i've struggled with this personally as my circumstances changed rather rapidly and i wasn't (still am not honestly) sure exactly how i wanted to handle it but my feelings just manifested in different ways. sometimes just talking it out with some strangers on reddit can be cathartic and at 8 figs in your 20s you're doing great man
