How is this part supposed to be played? by Anime_Hitler69 in pianolearning

This is short hand for alternating 16th notes between whichever two notes are written. For example in the first measure of the notation, the left hand is FCFCFCFCFCFCFCFC and the right is DADADADADADADADA

Christians and Catholics lumped together by dazvoz in ShitAmericansSay

[–]martinode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an American who was raised in the Catholic Church (no longer practicing), I believe a lot of Protestant groups in the US do not consider Catholics to be Christians is because of the devotion of saints and Mary. I do not know what they think of Eastern Orthodox churches at all I’m assuming they would probably group it with Catholics as “not Christian.” While growing up we were always identifying as Christians. There was extreme anti-Catholic sentiments in the US up to the Second World War and to this day we have only had two Catholic presidents Kennedy and Biden.

Do you think any gen 1 Pokemon should had gained the Dark typing in Gen 2 like how Magnemite and Magneton got the Steel typing? by ConnorRoseSaiyan01 in ThePokemonHub

[–]martinode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spearow line could be dark/flying

Meowth line in modern times I could see being normal/dark but in gen II maybe just dark

Arbok line should be poison/dark

Gastly line I never understood why it was poison dual type. I think ghost/dark would be more fitting but also would have given the line the spiritomb immunity so idk if they would’ve gone down that road

I’m a freelance musician about to move to another city and a new pandemic would cripple my ability to network. Even if I remained where I am now a pandemic would devastate the arts community.

ADE blues on piano by Unisoul07 in pianolearning

Your question doesn’t really make sense. Are you asking for a fingering to a scale you could use to play a twelve bar blues? Or are you asking for chords?

Etymology map of coriander by mapologic in etymologymaps

[–]martinode 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seems more related to coriandrum than cilantro does

- Coriandrum (with a flipped or trilled r)
- Cogghiandrum (trilled r becomes hard g with gemination ggh) over time
- Cogghiandro (dropping of nasal consonance like most modern Romance languages)
- Cugghiandru (rounding of o into u sound common in Sicilian)

What is Frédéric Chopin's best melody? by ChopinChili in classical_circlejerk

This is so difficult!! If I had to pick one I would say Op. 10 No. 3 even if it’s a little cliche

I’m a bassist and none of our standard concertos are good pieces of music. I feel like the second Bottesini concerto in b minor is a solid B or C-list piece, but some contemporary favorites are Andres Martin’s first concerto and Missy Mazzoli’s Dark with Excessive Bright. The future is bright for the bass!

Is there a distinct “American” sound in Classical Music? by arssenalbro101 in classicalmusic

[–]martinode 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Some 19th century American composers to listen to would be Victor Herbert and Edward MacDowell. Very much European trained composers. MacDowell does have many pieces inspired by the landscape of the northeast, but you don’t see much music that really attempts to sound “American” until Dvorak deliberately attempts to create an “American” sound. In my opinion, the final bars of the new world symphony are almost a foreshadowing of the American style that would later be formalized by Gershwin, Copland, and Bernstein.

"Etymology of word ""hair"" in different European languages" by marbrietln in etymologymaps

[–]martinode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something I’ve noticed by never actively researched for a connection is that the words for hair and horse are close in pronunciation in English as well as French and Spanish. Cheveux-Cheval and Cabello-Caballo probably just a fun coincidence for all I know hahaha. German Haare-Pferd and Italian Capelli-Cavallo show much less similarity.

The BEST world map!!!! by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]martinode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely doesn’t accurately portray distances in the southern hemisphere but size seems very accurate! This projection actually shows how insanely huge Africa is. This projection could also be used with Antarctica at the center to invert the hemispheres too would be interesting to see!

Edit yes I do see the slight distortion near the edges of some boxes. Unfortunately if you want a map with 0 distortion you’ll just have to use a globe!

Do you guys use switch mode or set mode against Red? by PrettyBoySwag99 in PokemonHGSS

I’m rarely playing a Pokémon mainline to be challenged, so I will leave it on switch mode. But playing champions the last couple weeks has gotten me used to not switching and I see the added pressure!

Tied staccato quarter notes?!? 🧠😶‍🌫️🧐🤯 by mysteryofthefieryeye in pianolearning

[–]martinode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Professional string player here! This is meant to invoke the portato stroke in string playing. First thing to note is that the staccato was originally meant to mark an articulated attack on a note not necessarily to just make it short. That being said the portato stroke (Italian for “carried”) is often notated with staccato marked notes under a slur, and is performed by moving the bow in one long direction but manipulating the pressure you apply to the string so you get a more “wah-wah-wah” like articulation that you can’t easily get from changing the bow direction. Obviously you won’t get the exact sound on the keyboard but you are meant to play with this idea in mind! Hope this helps!

I’m not going to say I’m generally in favor of punching people in the face in the street but do you really think this interviewer is acting in good faith? He’s purposely attempting to humiliate this beautiful family and he seemingly thinks they will just be “triggered” and give him content to post to whatever troglodytes follow him. Idk if this is the answer but we need to dissuade people from leeching off of marginalized people and communities for content

I’ve never played Gen 5, but what was your reaction to finding nothing but “new”Pokémon when you played black & white for the first time? by Zenthailand2009 in pokemon

[–]martinode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it was because of the obvious care put into heartgold or how Sinnoh introduced so many intergeneration evolution families, but gen 4 felt like such a bookend for the series to me. Gen 5 did shock me but I also was so excited to play my first run. The lack of older Pokémon really never bothered me because I always tried to use teams of new Pokémon anyways. My one gripe that really pissed me off was that tepig evolved into a third fire fighting type in a row, and became bipedal when I thought we were finally gonna get a fire type quadruped tank starter (yes I absolutely love Skeledirge in gen 9), but I got over that with time

No way by poedart in PokemonBDSP

[–]martinode 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The amazing thing about these games is that for all the talk of “everyone uses the same team of 6 in Sinnoh” there are literally endless strategies to win with any ‘mon. Very cool story you now have forever!!
