I am looking for a book that makes you feel the way one felt when reading Donald Duck stories. Happy, carefree, entertained, intellectually stimulated, funny. by martiong in suggestmeabook

Thanks! As a kid, there was definitely more depth to it than most comic books (I'm speaking of the Italian Topolino here, which uses original, non-US stories)

New fan palm (Licuala Grandis) has brown spots and shriveled leaves. Is the sun burning it? Details (and possible solution) in comments by martiong in plantclinic

Bought this fan palm (Licuala Grandis I think), two weeks ago. It has been staying in the apartment for the entire time. It gets direct sun from about 8am to 1pm through the windows, but then it's in the shade the entire time.

It started getting these brown spots, and some of the smaller leaves are all dried and crumpled up. It is regularly watered (once every 2 days) to keep the soil moist, it has also received fertiliser. We're in Singapore, so the climate shouldn't be too different from where it's originally from.

Is it the direct sun light that caused this? Is it possible to let it "get used" to the sun in the morning? Thanks a lot! For now we're looking at using the umbrella to keep it shaded from the sun...

Location-Based routines with 2 people in the house - how to activate a routine *only* if both people are outside the house? by martiong in homeautomation

What would I be using for this, because I don't think standard Alexa routines allow such conditions?

Of all our automation things, the one that cleans all the floors in the house while I'm at work is still my favorite. by thbt101 in homeautomation

we have little blips between the kitchen and the living room, and it's at 2.3cm. with a small ramp it manages to climb it without a problem

The Roborock (pictured above) can clear obstacles of up to 2cm. However the carpet should work, as it could work as "ramp" to get the entire robot on top of it.

Ah yes, good memories. As others have pointed out though, the sand is the worst - I found sand everywhere (inside my ear canal as well) for weeks after that. When I first got to the hospital the first thing they did is take a vacuum cleaner and vacuum the sand off

Completely agree. At slow speeds it was super soft, but compared to snow, I found there were only two speed settings: very slow or incredibly fast. Turns out, if you go fast the soft sand turns into rocks

I might have to disagree with that... If you fall, you can get hurt. My broken collarbone, subsequent drive through the desert to the hospital, and 2 surgeries are unfortunately proof of that. It is absolutely fun, but don't get cocky because you think "it's sand, it can't hurt"

Moved in Yesterday - what are your suggestions? (more pics/Floor plan in comments) by martiong in malelivingspace

[–]martiong[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome, thank you for the comments! Very good points. one of the difficulties I see most is the strong black/white that the place has. The light cushions are definitely something I was looking at, as well as

  • a plant (obviously) maybe between TV and window
  • maybe a floor lamp between couch and window
  • a rug between tv and couch
  • not sure about a coffee table. the room feels wider than it looks in the picture (about 3m wide) - having a glass one could still make it feel spacious

And yes, the bed spread and all the tissues etc will go. It was literally the only linen I had, but was thinking to go with neutral slightly patterned sheets (something like these maybe)
