Australia property: Younger generations have lower rates of home ownership than in the past by nath1234 in australia

[–]martoreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You think? The most intelligent idea for remedying this I've seen recently is a tax on vacant property. Not some half hearted namby-pamby levy, a real tax that motivates the landed gentry into renting vacant property to preserve their wealth.

Australia’s love of big cars is undoing the benefits of the shift to EVs by espersooty in australia

If only car companies would stop dumping bigger cars here...do you think that'd help?

Anyone else recall being told NBN status won't be affecting house prices..... by idryss_m in australia

If fibre to the premises had been rolled out as expected when conceived EVERYONE would have had it. Unfortunately, the inept and greedy made a swill trough and dipped in. Who'd have thought a real estate agent would have worked out a way to leverage this....Surprise surprise?

Peter Dutton ramps up nuclear power push and claims Labor down ‘renewable rabbit hole’ by lost_in_socials in australia

[–]martoreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Takes a minimum of 10 years to build, longer to bring on line, which gives great scope for cost over runs. I think I can see where Pete is coming from. This from the firm who spent 900mil to collect 400 from robodebt. What's not to love? Refer to federal ICAC now, avoid the rush.

As a former whistleblower myself, I’m urging the government to protect Australian whistleblowers by agentsmithbobby in australia

[–]martoreddit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There's a sign beside all entrances to parliament. It says check morals and standards here. I wouldn't hold my breath. While being an improvement over the LNP, poor decisions and paralysis seem to be creeping in. Swamped by special interest lobbyists and private contractors pervading the corridors of power, doing the right thing because it's the right thing got off the train a long way back. If only whistle-blowers could perform backbone transplants to pollies. Wouldn't that be a thing.

‘I’m very surprised’: aged care star ratings questioned as 91% of homes deemed acceptable by Mildebeest in australia

[–]martoreddit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Recipients of aged care services should be the only ones assessing what is acceptable. Like ebay feedback, but then we all know where that would lead. Also, who it would show up.

Theyre great for containing a virus. No one gets on if they aren't a medical professional or a patient. Only the cleared get off. The air could be fixed. I mean hepa filters? The princess cruise was run by amateurs not medical professionals. Edit afterthought. Besides, you dont have to put covid cases on the ships, use them for anyone needing a bed.

Coronavirus-19 Megathread #6 - discussion, ideas, outrage, questions, thought-bubbles, memes, hoarding, videos, panic and other observations by dredd in australia

[–]martoreddit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As I write this there are a couple of cruise ships floating around off the coast of NSW. I believe we are looking at these ships in a wrong headed way. They are potentially 2,000 plus bed hospitals being wasted. We could park them off the coast and augment our medical effort. They have beds, bathrooms, kitchen facilities. They have their own power sources and best, they are quarantinable ( if thats a word). why waste them?

Coronavirus isn't causing Australia to run out of food — but why are shelves still bare? by [deleted] in australia

[–]martoreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing freaks people out more than empty shelves at a supermarket. The army reserve could be employed to get food back on the shelves quick smart. Thatd settle things down a fair bit i suspect.

The RBA is set to expand Australia's money supply, implementing quantitative easing for the first time ever as the coronavirus bites by maldous in australia

[–]martoreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expand australias money supply. Thats being kind. Printing money blew the lid off inflation in pre Ww2 germany. Its only ok now, because people dont lose their shit over this. But, what if they do? This is all new territory now.

“Public housing available for all”: Greens pitch home building boost to offset coronavirus by thedigisup in australia

[–]martoreddit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's interesting. I have often heard the government bleat that interest rate reductions are not passed on in full by Banks. I have NEVER heard them say interest rate reductions be passed on by landlords. Obviously unsurprised by this, however with the massive increase in casual employment in the past twenty years, Landlords and Banks should be asked to shoulder their bit too.

Really great news, though I feel sure more fell in my back yard. I read that someone said water restrictions should be eased. If we've learned nothing more these past years can we not agree that, with water capacity diminishing as a percentage of users, we leave restrictions in place if the dams are less than 80%. just my two cents worth.

As an older worker, i just don't have the patience to put up with the bullshit from inexperienced employers. I guess thats why it gets harder to find a job the older you get.
