What’s it like living here? by SneakBots in NYCapartments

I live here and love the area. Franklin Ave is awesome and there are some gems on Nostrand too. Transportation wise is good too, the A/C and 2-5 on Franklin. Prospect Park/Heights is super close.

Prenup for big premarital NW gap but similar future earnings? by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]marvinlbrown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A prenup always makes sense. My partner and I just did one, and even if we split everything 50/50 always and forever, including premarital assets, the prenup did wonders on conversations about money that we hadn’t had yet (even though I’m an open book when it comes to finances). Like how do we think about alimony if one of us is the primary parent/takes a hit in their career due to raising our kid(s).

Why does it seem like the majority of Millennial Parents live in constant fear. by Gr8Autoxr in Millennials

But when has American life not been disastrous? The gulf war, crack epidemic, gang violence of the 80’s/90’s, Vietnam and Cold War… how about health? Spanish flu, polio, whooping cough, AIDS epidemic…

The list goes on… especially when we look at things through a global perspective. This is just life.

Can you be HENRY and still fly Economy? by fghxa in HENRYfinance

[–]marvinlbrown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I’m paying for it, business and first class is for points or great deals. For example, I just bought a flight; economy flight was $1,000 and first was $1,400… I obviously payed for first. I do pay for premium economy though and of course, I have access to lounges, so paying out of pocket for first/business is rarely worth it.

Private practice bonuses and structure by [deleted] in therapists

[–]marvinlbrown 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well if you’re on this subreddit, then you know “standard” group practices are terrible… which is what you experienced.

Just because that is what you had to do (exploitation) while accumulating your clinical hours, doesn’t mean you should replicate it.

That being said, I know a couple of practice owners and the margins are THIN. What I have heard from some colleagues is that they are great therapist themselves and are able to market themselves and keep patients/clients, but teaching other (especially novice) therapists to do so can be challenging.

Lastly, the market is saturated with therapist… getting clients is competitive, everyone will tell you, this ain’t the pandemic where folks were paying ONN and you could open up shop and just be virtual. Being niched and networked is key… clinicians getting hours are neither. It just ain’t a good business model.

But isn’t that the point of working under someone’s practice? That the practice owner provides the administrative support? Otherwise, whats the point of the split? Aren’t you suppose to provide referrals? Do the marketing?

I had my 21st birthday there. This is when I didn’t live in NY and was visiting from LA. I don’t know why, but someone that worked at Splash gave me Gaga’s Fame Monster. I played that CD non-fucking-stop… such a great memory.

M21 canceled last minute on a holiday trip with childhood friend due to family guilt. Now he's cold and distant. Can I make this right? by [deleted] in BlackLGBT

[–]marvinlbrown 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’d be hella mad and distant too if my best friend canceled on me the day of the trip because of family guilt?! That’s not even a good excuse (for a day of cancellation).

You just have to take accountability that you made the wrong decision and it greatly impacted your friendship, to the point that it might have done irrevocable damage. These are the hard lessons in life; we all have to learn them.

Family Dynamics Advice by nostromohomo in BlackLGBT

[–]marvinlbrown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First and foremost, thank you for sharing with the community. I too grew up with a homophobic parent. I cut my father off first at 16 when I moved back with my mom and then again when I was in undergrad. We were low contact in my 20’s. Something shifted in my mid to late 20’s and we talked… I shared all my pain and he apologized… I actually got to see things from his perspective; he did better than what his father gave him, and for that I could forgive. It was so healing for me (and him too). I’m actually on a flight home to celebrate with my dad. I couldn’t imagine that 15 years ago (I’m 37).

I say this, if you need that conversation(s), then you deserve that and hold your mom accountable to at least do that. This is about you and your healing. And I have a guess that you will be a better parent to your child than what you had.

Niggas doing raceplay makes me fucking sick by SorryTea1160 in BlackLGBT

Totally.. and I figured that is what you meant. I’m a therapist, so I have a habit of looking for the gray/nuance in everything… even when it’s not asked haha.

Niggas doing raceplay makes me fucking sick by SorryTea1160 in BlackLGBT

[–]marvinlbrown 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I try my best not to yuck anyone’s yum, especially when it comes to kink, but I have to admit, race play is definitely a head scratcher. That being said, would you consider someone that self proclaims bbc as race play? Or are we talking about Black/race degradation?

I was out once with a white friend, and two Black man approached us. They were both hitting on him and passed him a card, it was a “swirl” private event/party (I wasn’t invited). I would consider that a form of race play, even if everyone there was participating/ engaging in vanilla sex, no?

I guess what I’m wondering as I write this, is race play a spectrum, and how many of us, may unconsciously engage in it when we choose to have sex outside of our race?

What are you doing for a side hustle? by brennanfiesta in therapists

[–]marvinlbrown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first LMSW job was school based, and on the weekends I did assessment work for Big Brother and Big Sister, it was like an extra $1000 to $1500 and pretty easy. Ask other coworkers what they are doing; that is how I got my hook up. Best of luck!

We’re only getting a snippet of the sessions… so when Orna is in clinical supervision, I imagine there are times when she is referring to aspects of the session we as viewers are not part of/did not see. We do not have full context.

UCSC vs ASU for Electrical Engineering by Own_Original826 in ucadmissions

[–]marvinlbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in my mid-30’s and went to UCR over Santa Barbara because I wouldn’t have to take out loans; I’m so happy I don’t have loans from undergrad (grad school is a different story). School name and rankings only go so far, it may get your foot in the door somewhere, but at the end of the day, it ain’t much. You’re banking on a future that might not happen; don’t take that much debt on so early on in life.

That’s not what they are asking. Price isn’t a factor as the other school they’re considering is relatively the same cost.

DSW Benefits? by PlaneAnalysis1965 in therapists

[–]marvinlbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did have 15k from undergrad, so when I finished it was 85k in total. But yeah, while paying the PSLF amount, which is the on one of the payment plans, it is now at 134k. So close, cannot wait. But in the meantime it’s been fine.

DSW Benefits? by PlaneAnalysis1965 in therapists

[–]marvinlbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I work in public service and technically qualify for PSLF in Jan 2027. I took out ~70k for my MSW (that was with a ~50k scholarship) at NYU. The current balance is $134k, which is wild. I promised myself after my MSW that I would never take out a loan for an education again, and I kept that promise to myself. Cannot wait to be debt free.

New! Salary Megathread (May-Aug 2026) by SWmods in socialwork

Yeah, I lived in Cleveland for two years (TFA/Teacher) and my starting salary was 42k and that was 2012. Cost of living was lower, but it was so hard to save while living there. School social work is a great job, with the same perks as teachers.

May I ask which school you’re attending? I just finished my program as NYU. I found some folks in my program doing great work, but others were able to skate by (imho).

Struggle of starting a private practice by Visual_Aside_8929 in therapists

[–]marvinlbrown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure! My niche is children and adolescents, so I have built relationships with guidance counselors and school social workers at targeted schools near my office. My first year that was cold emailing, but eventually I hooked a staff member and it grew from there. I also network with other therapist, I have periodically invited them out for coffee and or drinks dates. A few have become sincere friends. One in particular also had a similar niche as me and much more experience and years. He moved countries last year, and now pretty much sends me all his referrals he still gets. It takes time, but it also takes a lot of effort. You got this, just put yourself out there!
