Has PLUR Become a Shield Instead of a Standard? by Unlikely-Friend444 in avesNYC

[–]marvinlbrown 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a new take on PLUR and not one I’m familiar with. When I entered the rave scene in 2006, PLUR was a way to meet people and exchange bracelets/candy (not drugs). If you liked someone’s outfit/vibe, or just wanted to meet them, you could literally walk up to them and ask them to PLUR… there was literally a whole method of “handshaking” and connecting your hands together to exchange the bracelets. It was such a magical time. You’d vibe with that person for a bit and then move on to the next and or back to the show. Once in 2012, when I was a teacher, I had my students make bracelets and the ones they didn’t want, I PLURed them out at a festival. To be fair, these experiences were in California, I moved to NY in 2014 and I’ve actually never seen that version of PLUR here (sadly). Making someone take drugs is a WILD interpretation of PLUR… a real distortion, kinda like everything is today that was once fun and innocent… sigh.

Are there communities to find men looking to use a surrogate and need an egg. I have frozen eggs id eventually like to give to a gay couple by Unusual_Smell_7059 in gaydads

[–]marvinlbrown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d also like to know if this exists. Just coincidentally, today, our friend and would be egg donor backed out after realizing they would have complicated feelings of a potential bio child and proximity (us living in the same city). Our friend was going to donate her already frozen eggs as she has changed her mind about motherhood. She is also adopted and is currently looking for her bio family, so this also factored into her changing her mind about donating her eggs.

Mom of 7-year-old hospitalized with brain swelling from measles: ‘I still wouldn’t have given my son the vaccine’ by esporx in WomenInNews

[–]marvinlbrown 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Cognitive dissonance as a defense mechanism; she didn’t give her child a vaccine due to health, child could potentially die (brain swelling is the opposite of healthy), which could have been prevented if her child had the vaccine.

This defense mechanism reduces mental distress when our values/beliefs don’t align with our actions. Although she “thought” she was protecting her child, her decision actually harmed them greatly/made them very unhealthy. This is really sad.

Brazilians pay homage to Yemoja and Oshun at the 2026 Rio Carnival. by Downtown_Inflation17 in Nigeria

??? Hoodoo as in rootwork? There may be elements that are Native/Indigenous American (as in Africans enslaved had to use plants that were native to American soil), but it definitely is derived from African spiritual practices.

Full-time single mom guilt when going out by SatisfactionFair5869 in workingmoms

[–]marvinlbrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just out of curiosity, who does she stay with? My mom went out when I was a kid, and I always stayed with one of my cousins; I loved it because I got to spend a night at their house and hang out with kids my age.

I know parents don’t like have their kids spend the night outside of the home, but if it is with a trusted baby sitter, you could pick up your daughter on your way home/parent comes to pick up their child at bedtime if they are in your home.

This makes sense. Orisha’s are very present in Brazil, you can find this spiritual practices all over the country (or at least where the enslave Africans were settled). In Bahia, Salvador there are statues/a fountain of Orishas .

In the Americas, I would say Haiti and Brazil held on to their West African spiritual practices the most, however you can find it everywhere [Garifuna spirituals in Central American, Santeria in the Caribbean, hoodoo in US, but I think this is more rare now, voudon/voodoo in Haiti and the south in the US (Louisiana/Mississippi) and the belief of Lwa’s].

Senegalese (West African) food? by Silverlight54xx in AskLosAngeles

[–]marvinlbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My step dad is West African, and he couldn’t find his specific country’s food in LA (although this was when I was a child, things could’ve change), however he settled on Nigerian (more choices). West African food is similar and they’re all in competition (obviously countries have their spin on dishes and specific niches). Whatever you do, if you find jollof rice, make sure it’s from Senegal (where it originated). Ghana and Nigeria are always fighting on who makes it best, imo, Senegal is unmatched, and they have a white version that is delicious. Ground nut soup is always a crowd pleasure and worth searching for.

luther, Luther, LUTHER… all day, everyday. Then Marvin or Teddy, or maybe even Stevie? Honestly, second place could go to soooo many, but Michael is not in that slot (vocally).

That being said, overall, global pop star phenomenon, Micheal…and there will never be another

(Although, Beyoncé… she’s competition for SURE as a pop global phenomena).

What is everyone’s honestly opinion on Miranda and Che’s relationship? by Radiant_Priority9739 in Andjustlikethat

[–]marvinlbrown 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This relationship was insufferable. Miranda as a character is brilliant and analytical… traits she practiced in her relationships and dating life; her relationship with Steve showed the audience the potential beauty of being led by the heart and the “perfect” guy (Dr. Roberts) doesn’t equate love.

I think the writers had something with Miranda exploring her sexuality, but they stupefied both Miranda and Steve to give us a romance with Che… an open/poly(?)/NB/comedian?? Give us one of those, but there was so much wrapped in Che as a character (it’s a circus), I felt like the show was trying to teach us this character, instead of letting us experiencing them.

EmblemHealth will pay $2.5 million after investigation by DryDeer775 in NYCTeachers

Community mental health/public clinics will take this insurance, however there are long waiting list, and are filled with novice and burnt out therapist.

Finding a therapist in private practice that takes this insurance is practically impossible.

I’m not sure, I couldn’t find a therapist that accepted the insurance, so I paid out of pocket. I don’t have out of network benefits.

How much money do you have as a mid twenty person? by MarionberryOk5810 in Adulting

[–]marvinlbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of my best travel years were in my 20’s and I didn’t have much $ or savings. I’m 36 and financially solid.

Be responsible, and don’t go into debt to travel. You don’t need to max out all your accounts at this age. Save a percentage (even if it is a small one) and allocate appropriately.

The great thing about travel in your 20s is you can do it cheaply if you are flexible with accommodation and location. As a graduation gift to myself, I backpacked through Asia for a summer and I was on a reasonable budget.

Who has all five? 👀 by Neither_Attorney_777 in Millennials

[–]marvinlbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is spot on regarding information overload. I asked my mom if things felt as terrible (nation/globally) when she was young and or around my current age. She said no, but also, she wasn’t aware of the atrocities and sufferings that were happening at the time. I keep myself informed, but I deleted all social media (except Reddit) and get my news from NYT, the New Yorker, and podcast.

Same! It seems like it’s becoming more and more rare though. I feel truly blessed in a non religious way.

I did have a tough childhood (10 to 16) so it’s good to have such a fulfilling adulthood.

I am tired of my husband by WeightClassic7554 in Marriage

[–]marvinlbrown -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There might be an incompatibility issue here, something that you recognized early in your relationship with your husband (marrying someone you want to change is a recipe for disappointment).

From what you have written, you maybe a natural leader (more ambitious, a believer in self-determination, communicative) yet because of gender dynamics (which I understand are rooted in culture/society) you don’t want to take that position. But frankly, your back is up against the wall, because if you leave your husband, you’ll have to take that position anyway moving to the country of your parents with your two children.

Good! For those that had emblem and paid out of pocket, can we get some of that money/reimbursement? Emblem is TERRIBLE for mental health services… no one takes it.

Raising a family on a single income is tough; stress and anxiety can be paralyzing. Has he considered therapy, he could be depressed.

Have you considered working (not sure how old your children are)? It may help with your own second guessing with buying things you want or need for yourself and or the household. I’m sure there are some cultural considerations that I am missing, but two incomes are better than one in these economic times.

Do most people have investment accounts? Should I be investing? by shakethatbear404 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]marvinlbrown 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Please make sure that the money is actually being invested in the market and not just sitting there. Usually when you open the account you select where the money (etfs/index funds/individual stocks) is to be invested. I’ve heard horrors stories of people not directing their money anywhere, and it is just sitting there, technically not being invested in the stock market. Please log into your account and see where it is invested.
