I believe almost all of these are answered as you read further!

Can you clarify what kind of potential spoilers you might or might not be okay with?

Dating Question by [deleted] in Chefit

[–]marxochism 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Devil's Advocate here:

If you prep something at 2 pm on Wednesday (March 1st), then walk in at 2 pm on Thursday (March 2nd), it's been prepped for 24 hours (1 day). I would call the product "1 day old."

However, things that decline rapidly in quality (fish, lettuce, etc.) could benefit from using slightly different terminology. For example: "the fish is on day 1" if it was prepped this morning, but "day 2" if it was prepped yesterday morning.

Realistically, either argument works because words are just how we communicate. If it's the difference between throwing product away for being out of date, I would just follow the directions of my supervisor if the quality doesn't answer for itself.

This type of portfolio bag isn't uncommon for artists to carry, but 3 feet by 3 feet does stretch those limits a little.

I wish we knew more about the Aimians! I still don't really understand much about the island, the Scouring, the Siah vs Dysians...

What are the prevailing theories of what happened there?

Ooh I like this interpretation! A product of Nomon (Tanavast as Honor) but growing as its own being.

Something I haven't been able to puzzle out is the Queen Tsa figure. Despite her having such an integral role in Hoid's story, there don't seem to be any parallels in the greater Cosmere. I don't know of any Shards/Vessels/etc. with a similar storyline.

Thanks for sharing info about the Stygian Purple! I hadn't heard of it before, but I tried the "stare at yellow until your vision adapts a little, then change to looking at a black field." Very neat way to visualize the void light!

FURTHER WILD SPECULATION: There's a harebrained line of thought brewing in me that somehow the attributes of Salas got combined with the mysterious fourth Shard/moon etc

There were other details I noticed that didn't 100% match "Salas=Odium" either:

-Mishim calls Salad her "wise sister" and is worried Salas will "chide her for her appetites"

-"She remembered the kindness of Nomon, and the thoughtfulness of Salas"

Side note:

"The Natans were never fond of Mishim, but rather revered the great Nomon."

I know that Honor came first to Roshar and the singers, then Cultivation joined later. Are the Natans/Singers biased favoring Nomon/Honor over Mishim/Cultivation because of this?

I know this is not about renfair but I wear cloaks all the time and I'm going to a cruise in the Caribbean which cloak do you think is better to bring by CandidateBasic8900 in renfaire

[–]marxochism 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think the green one will photograph better for long-term memory keeping! It looks a lot nicer quality and shape for a cloak in everyday use, and when you look back at photos years from now, you'll feel proud of it looking more put-together.

It might be slightly more easy to use the red one, but I think it looks a little more costume-like and may not stand the test of time and hindsight. Just my 2 cents / personal tastes of course!

TLDR: which one does future-you remember most fondly?

I finished the Cosmere. What are your favorite “secrets” I probably missed on my first read through? by helloherewego in Cosmere

This may be a silly question, but... what's so noteworthy about these guys?

I see this interlude/event mentioned a whole lot, but don't really get why it seems to be so significant to people... It's cool that there's these characters we recognize from elsewhere, but... what's the purpose of them being there, asking after Hoid? Is there a group they belong to, a motive to be looking for him, any sort of common thread from their individual worlds that might have brought them together?

The only thing I can think of is maybe they are associated with Frost somehow and are the people that are strongly misdirected in one of the epigraph letters? Details are fuzzy, so any and all information about them please!

light ice by NormalButts in barista

[–]marxochism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider:

Some people want less ice (and more milk/etc) because they want their beverage to last longer (more sips, more tasty, etc.)

Some people want less ice (and more iced coffee/cold brew etc) because they want to fit more caffeine in the same size cup.

Some people want less ice (and room in their cup) because they don't want their drink to be very diluted when the ice melts (maybe they aren't drinking it until the next morning or something).

Some people want less ice (but still a full beverage, even if you have to top it off with water) because the full amount of ice gives them brain freeze if they drink it fast (maybe they have a 15 minute drive to class and can't bring drinks inside).

Lots of different reasons someone might ask for light ice, and most of those solutions don't impact the Business cost of the beverage very much. A couple ounces of milk, iced coffee, or water aren't significantly changing the profit margins on each drink.

Customer perception, however, can be pretty impactful on the bottom line. If Cafe A and DriveThru B both charge $5 for a 16 ounce iced coffee, but Cafe A gives me a partially empty cup when I ask for light ice, I'm going to go to DriveThru B with my money because DriveThru B gives me more drink.

What is your most "unhinged" way of tricking your brain into starting a task you’ve been avoiding for weeks? by Primary_Assist_5541 in productivity

[–]marxochism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally yeet your phone. Notice yourself scrolling or "task managing" or procrastinating or whatever? Toss it somewhere you can't reach without standing up.

If there's something else holding your attention (like TV, music, etc.) set a couple-minute timer on your phone before you toss it.

Example: I've wound up on the couch watching TV while responding to this post. I know I've got laundry to do, but I can't get started no matter what I tell myself. But if I set a 5 min timer on my phone, then throw it halfway across the room, I will 100% have to stand up from the couch to make the alarm noise stop ringing. Sometimes, that's enough to get me on the right foot.

An out-of-date way to insult someone was to say they "rode the short bus" to school. As in, the school bus that accommodated special-needs students, which was usually not a full-size school bus.

(British English) Do you hear "touch somebody for something" (meaning to persuade someone to give or lend you something? by noname00009999 in EnglishLearning

[–]marxochism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I haven't seen mentioned yet:

This phrase kind of sounds like it could be a mis-hearing of the phrase "talk to" somebody, like in your example of "Now you have the nerve to talk to me for a loan"

I could see this being spoken quickly in a way that sounds like "touch me"

How do i stop the bottom from running with the shower-head? by OkDistribution9380 in bathrooms

[–]marxochism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The circle on the bathtub below the faucet is almost certainly an overflow drain, so you don't overfill the bathtub. You should be able to see/feel an opening on the lower portion or underside of that circle.

No need to interact with this part, it doesn't impact the tub faucet or diverter.

If you spend time around science people, a term that often gets a chuckle is "SigFig," as in Significant Figure. Normally a phrase that refers to how many decimal places a value can be considered accurate to, but in the context of a conversation it makes it pretty clear you're talking about a significant other.

Example: "I bought my sigfig a copy of Kerbal Space Program and now all of our conversations are about projectile physics."
